Tried to play the new DOOM: The Dark Refund today and it kinda sucked. I enjoyed the shit out of eternal and to a similar extent 2016 when they came out, but this one I just couldn't get into out the gate. I think it's because of how tryhard the story is when it comes to being 'epic' or 'awesome'. The writing in these games has never been that good but in 2016 and eternal I was mostly able to push them aside and out of mind to focus on the gameplay more. But in this game it's front and center and impossible to really glaze my eyes over (especially since tabbing out brings up the pause menu), they just can't write for shit and I wish they'd realize this. It's not that you can't skip the cutscenes, it's pretty easy to do, but it's just really annoying and messes up the flow if you do and there's still ingame stuff as well that nags on you. The gameplay in this is still fine, arcadey arena shooter and all with secrets galore scattered across the map. Although, I feel like the secrets have been getting less and less exciting since 2016, used to be actual upgrades and early weapons and such but now it's just stupid trinkets and lore items and I don't care for them. I think that eternal was a bit more quick and snappy, though I'll have to go back after a sale and see how this one turns out to be near the endgame when you have all upgrades and such. Also it doesn't really help for me that right before I booted it up I was playing minecraft and another indie game which have very noninvasive tutorials and minimal railroading while this game stops the gameplay every 20 seconds to force you to learn something new or show off some new enemy and I got tired of that real fast.

But above all else what made me decide I had enough and wanted to refund it was while just in a level I was on high quality settings with even DLSS enabled on a 3090 and I was getting sub60 fps. Combined with everything else that pissed me off so much I alt-f4'd out straight to the purchase history screen to request my refund.

This latest episode of Apocalypse Hotel is what it should have been from the start.
I checked the new releases for today, saw that new Apocalypse Hotel episode was out, almost didn't want to watch it; but this episode was good. Starting off strong with the 'cooners leaving the hotel, then a new guest arrives who actually bonds with Yachiyo, and even shows us what the post apocalyptic world looks like. It reminded me of "Somali to Mori no Kamisama".
There was almost no racoons this episode, but the times when they showed the girl racoon really broke the immersion into what was going on between Yachiyo and the new guest. Racoons were the worst thing that happened to the show.

It started off a bit slow but I think the Sentai Daishikkaku show has found its stride again. Episodes 2-4 kind of fell into a standard "fight against the local big bad guy" thing which I do find enjoyable, but the stakes weren't the same. There were peeks into things happening elsewhere, but due to the abilities on display the plot was focused. It was still very enjoyable in the standard shounen-y way!
Having watched episode 5, I can say that it's really done a great job of re-establishing the things I liked about it begin with. Lots of complicated motivations and factions and some mystery to go with it as well. You can't tell what's going to happen next!
I feel a bit limited on what I can praise about it without spoiling stuff, unfortunately. The visuals are still really good and this studio is definitely continuing to improve on things there.

Maebashi Witches has been the surprise of the season for me and like 90% of it comes from this fat cunt being aggressively toxic at every available opportunity. Almost everything that works about the other characters and situations works because she's there to play off it and escalate minor annoyances into full-blown shouting matches. There is both humor and catharsis in her extreme and immediate judgementalism towards all the vapid and self-serving bullshit pervading the world. Even when she's hypocritically calling out her own flaws in other people her disgust only serves to emphasize how she truly understands the level of how bad it is.

/v/ appreciation thread.
R:22 / I:12
mono has really fallen off a cliff, huh? I was hoping last episode was an outlier, but now we're back to hag tourism and montages and doing fucking nothing with the cameras. They've done in a few episodes what it took Yuru Camp several seasons to do and now it just the third place girls eat food and travel show this season.
R:42 / I:12
What show, game or manga do you refuse to engage with and why? I refuse to watch the EVA rebuilds because I have no interest in them, I believe The End of Evangelion was the perfect ending and I see no point in watching past that. Similarly, I haven't seen the Madoka Magica sequel nor played the gacha game released last year for the same reason.
I also refuse to watch the new Higurashi show because I hate the Rika redesign and because I don't see the point on it.
R:20 / I:12
One of my favorite shows is getting a sequel soon. I really like this series and think a lot of people passed over it because it was said to be a Madoka rip-off when the anime came out. I've been reading the LNs and they're really good. I think they'd be a perfect series for someone learning kana.

The new season of the anime should be really good because it will cover what is arguably the best two LNs in the series. The only downside is it'll probably be 12 episodes instead of 24. It's a lot of content to cover in 12 episodes. The first season felt really fast paced because of that. I don't want to spoil anything but suffice to say characters are introduced quickly and certain events happen too fast.

Anyone else a fan of Raising Project? I don't understand why this series isn't more popular. It feels like only a few people have seen it. I am hopeful season 2 will do good in the ratings and maybe we'll get some OVAs or something. A proper video game based on this series would be really fun.
R:18 / I:5
Do I watch it in Chinese or Japanese?
R:3 / I:0
Can't believe she fucking died.
What the heck. Kamome and Umi-chan were not real people??
If you think about it after the fact, it's not unheard of for a VN's story to go this route, but it still came out of left field that two of the characters didn't event exist?
Were the other characters even interacting with Kamome or is this a Fight Club scenario?
Started the show thinking it was just a SOL VN adaptation, but it's piqued my interest with the latest episode.

Vintage Story

Let's become hunter-gathers together!

I discovered this game recently, and it's pretty enjoyable. Despite the Minecraft-like appearance the game is so much more in-depth and realistic when it comes to its gameplay. Crafting, for example, can require multiple items within a crafting space, and creating things like tools requires you to actually knap stones into shape, creating pottery requires shaping clay, mining requires finding surface copper, etc. The built-in survival guide for looking up crafting recipes is basically a necessity.

Server: 207.211.172.205

You can buy the game from https://www.vintagestory.at/ for 20 EUR.

The refund policy is really generous if you don't like it:
"We offer refunds within 2 weeks of purchase or 10 hours of play time, whichever comes first. However, even if you fall outside those limits you can still request a refund and we'll take a look. In principle, if you don't like our game, then we also don't want to keep your money."

These LycoReco shorts are genius because they're easy enough to sit down and watch for practically anyone and it's just great SoL scenes one after another. What a genius way to get people reinvested into the anime before S2 starts. I think they've done this with other series too but this is the first time I'm seeing one pop into my RSS feed so they must be promoting it a bit extra.
R:6 / I:2
These "look, we own the rights to this stuff too" cameos are getting more common and I don't think I like them much. It's severely forth wall breaking and takes me out of their world.
It's not a serious show or anything, just a show about brown elf boobers (which are nice) but still...
R:11 / I:5
As much as I'm enjoying Apocalypse Hotel, I'm not thrilled about how the overall tone has shifted. The first couple episodes had a strong feeling of melancholy as the leftovers slowly declined, but the tanuki sticking around have turned it into a goofy comedy. The last episode in particular seemed to invalidate the passage of time element and basically took away the sense that the robots would eventually end up a state of disrepair. The sense of loneliness and isolation is also gone now that there are always guests to tend to and people to talk with instead of just repeating an endless routine with a bunch of beepboopbots. I really think keeping the shitters around this long was a mistake, it's probably impossible to get back what the first couple episodes had at this point.

EU V has been officially announced. It wasn't really a secret since they've been openly releasing dev diaries for what could only be a new EU for some time, but now it's out there and a few good boy streamers have gotten to make carefully curated videos of the early alpha gameplay.

I'm a bit conflicted about it. On the one hand it does seem like they're fixing fundamental issues with IV with things like pops and better trade, but on the other it looks like they've taken cues from CK3 and Vicky 3 with the UI and warfare. It also stands to be seen how much content they're going to lock off to fund the next 15 years of DLC. Obviously no one should ever give Paradox money, but I want to believe this will be the first one in a while that gets more than 50 hours out of me.

With each episode of Kowloon I'm more and more convinced that they're in a simulation of sorts created by that object in the sky. I don't know what happened to Kowloon, if the memory preservation device has just let them demolish the actual town or if there was an accident in the real world that caused a rush to it. But I think if there was some accident it may be why Kudou blames himself for Reiko's death. Otherwise my theory is that Kudou with Hebinuma and Gwen have some sort of administrator role in the simulation that resulted in Kudou doing something to Reiko's memory/past.

Aside from just theorizing, it does let me ponder the theme of identity that seems to be prevalent in each character, especially when it comes to the supposed copies. I'm still a bit confused by them so I think I'll read the manga to get a grasp on that part better. Like is Yaomei the real or the copy? Kujirai in particular constantly trying to measure herself up against the past Reiko she doesn't know is an interesting struggle. I don't think Kudou will ever be able to come along to her though, since Reiko seems so ingrained in his memory and he carries such grief and regret over her loss that any love or affection towards Kujirai just creates causes him to remember her.

Shoushimin Series

You are Osanai.

You control the following assets:
1. One desperate, lonely mysterysexual "ex"-boyfriend (CUTE!) (You) (try to contain you're enthusiasm)
2. His best friend, who rims cocoa mugs and has authority over the newspaper club but distrusts you for very good reasons (EXCITING!)
3. One submissive ginger fuccboi whose brother is a firefighter and probably the local arsonator (HOT!) (the brother, not the ginger)
4. The ginger's tryhard friend who may be boring but therefore eager to please and stressed out and an easy mark (DOKI!)
5. Some random fat kid who will do anything you ask in exchange for pastries (LEWD! FAT! PROBABLY TASTY IF YOU'RE OK WITH CANNIBALISM!) (You are, as long as he's curvy enough, don't lie)

What is your next move?
If you were smart enough to see two steps ahead, what would you have done to avoid ending up in any of the positions outlined above?

I am very excited for the second season of Bisque Doll. Not only was the first one great with fanservice, and well animated too, but the chemistry Gojo and Marine had together was wonderful. Definitely a far cry from other "loser otaku with popular gf" anime, Gojo was much more of a reserved MC that can be reliable and more perceptive of Marine than the normal lead is. And Marine was a ball of life that radiated cuteness and sexiness in all of her cosplays. It was nice to watch them grow closer and bond over a somewhat shared passion and each being able to support the other. I hope there's a realization of the tension in this season unlike with the Succubus scene...

This season is so amazing that even the "generic" quasi-harem show Yami Healer with the super chuuni magical doctor is top notch. I don't know how it can be so good. It's unfortunate that the first episode did quite a poor job of selling it, but I'm so glad I decided to marathon episodes 2-5 yesterday.
It's all so cliche and yet it's executed so well with the cute girls being cute and the chuuni moments being stupidly satisfying.

Retardedly perfect chuuni skills: Check.
Cute adopted little elf girl: Check.
Cute mature ghost that goes "ka ka ka": Check.
Stupid fun humor that's occasionally serious when it needs to be: Check.
What a nice show.

I used to love these threads on 4/a/. Pitch your own anime and judge other people's ideas. I will start:
¥Slice of life, CGDCT set in pre-colonial North America
¥Focus on a group of 4 native american girls, 12 year old or younger, living a tribal life
¥The anime would be a comedy with some ecchi elements but also comfy
¥Episodes revolve around stuff like hunting, fishing, cooking, going on adventures, etc
¥The girls would be half naked all the time

Ninja to Koroshiya no Futarigurashiyea

The cute ninja anime has really been providing classic anime wackiness in a way that's been sorely lacking recently apart from Jashin-chan. I think this anime follows more the core spirit of what makes dark humor so great. The morality, or lack thereof, of their actions isn't forcefully shoved in your face and even is made light of as the killing spree continues unrepentant and furthermore rewarded. All the real negatives are left in the meta of the anime where you associate getting to learn the characters better with their unceremonious deaths. That carefree attitude lending itself perfectly to taking jabs at society as mindless killing provides a better life for Satoko and Konoha than any sort of ordinary lifestyle could, completely devaluing human life into a yen sign and enjoying each second of it.

I think Shaft having made this was truly a boon for this anime. Their prior experience with SZS and Maria Holic (No surprise also looking at who from Shaft directed this) primed them to be absolutely perfect for pulling it off. Not sure there's any other studio out there at the moment who could tackle it without shoving in some sort of forced moralfagging or messing up the underlying cynicism. Konoha isn't the kind of character I can see working as anyone but the completely black face of psychopathy, greed, and sloth that she is. And Satoko is perfect as her easily manipulated and lacking the brains for ethics sidekick. The abusive light yuri relationship between them being the perfect icing to complement this murder cake. I hope it succeeds as a nice like Jashin/Mahoako did and we can see a return to more Dokuros/Punies lighting our screens going into the future.
R:5 / I:1
So I just started this series. Partway through ep 3 and I'm getting the urge to rant. Bear with me.
Everything about it is so high quality, but I just can't help but be rubbed the wrong way by this attitude it has with the past, which you see EVERYWHERE.
For context, I'm not religious at all.

But this mindset that's so common is one of unearned smug superiority. Standing on the shoulders of giants, absorbing so much fact through osmosis, and having this better-than-they, smarter-than-they idea about the people of the past, with no consideration for historical or cultural realities......

It's hard to put into words exactly, but the premise of this anime is that the main character is in 15th century Europe and wants to prove heliocentrism in spite of persecution.
So from the very start we, with our modern osmosis-knowledge, start with the certainty that the protagonist and right and the accepted opinion of his world is wrong.

I for one couldn't prove heliocentrism in that era. Neither could >99% of the population. Of course with modern technology, modern scientific consensus, etc we know it to be true, and now even poor idiots wouldn't doubt it. Not because they know WHY they shouldn't doubt it, but just because it's the common view of the day.

I just feel like it's so presumptuous to write a story where, not only is the whole world wrong, but we as outside observers KNOW it's wrong and are meant to feel smug about that knowledge. "Oh those STEWPID 1400s churchmen and their campaign against the obvious truth!"

Besides which, it's just historically inaccurate. I get the feeling that it's maybe supposed to be Not!Europe, and either way it's not a biography or anything, but in the early 15th century nobody was burned for promoting heliocentrism. Copernicus lived a long life promoting it. It didn't catch on, since it went against established thought, but it wasn't generally considered heresy.

And we need to consider WHERE and WHEN that established thought came from. Back in the Greco-Roman period, the early age of philosophers, many leading thinkers didn't limit their theories to specific fields, like most scientists do today. So many wrote on diverse subjects. Thinkers like Aristotle and Ptolemy were incredibly influential and deserved much of the praise heaped on them. They weren't right about everything, but what they were right on was incredible, and what they were wrong on still usually had a solid theoretical basis and deserves respect. The issue is when people began assuming that, being right on one thing meant they must be right on other things, that a thousand years of momentum carried that forward.

The geocentric model isn't some clearly-nonsense idea. There was a lot of thinking done by very smart men to back it up. But with our hindsight, it LOOKS as silly as flat-Eartherism.

Going forward in time to the era of Galileo, greater levels of church persecution of natural science theories began, but just saying "The church persecuted Galileo for his heliocentrism" ignores a lot of circumstance.
For one, Galileo was rather caustic in promoting his ideas. For two, he had a lot of enemies, and those enemies used whatever they could to try fucking him over. Honestly, the story of Galileo is one of church corruption being used to settle personal feuds much more than one of religious stifling of science.
For two, this was all in the era of the Reformation, which while in many ways was justified, also lead to wars (such as the 30 Years War) on a greater scale than Europe had ever seen before.
I'm not some inquisition apologist or anything, and in many cases I'm appalled by the ways various "heresies" were stamped out. The Albigensian Crusade, for instance. Horrible shit happened there.
But it's not hard to imagine a timeline where this "heresy" here or that "heresy" there (I use quotes since I'm not actually religious and don't really believe in the idea of heresy) could have lead to conflicts like the 30 Years War much earlier in time.

And while it might be tempting to suggest that all of that violence just proves that religion is evil or something like that, all it takes is a look at the horrible violence committed in the name of Communism, a supposedly "secular" ideology to see that it isn't religion so much, as it is human nature.
"Religion" is natural. That is, strongly-held beliefs which override all else. Even today I see it. Can you really look at the modern gender cult and see anything but religious patterns? No dissent from dogma, demonization of infidels, etc.

Religion is completely natural and has the potential to lead to great good, but just as with everything natural to humanity, there's the potential for great evil too. How many have died in the name of someone else's love? Is love evil?

Anything just rambling here at this point. I figure kissu welcomes this sort of post..................

I'm finding this show quite... bland, but I don't mean that as a negative. It doesn't feel "anime-like" if that makes sense, especially when you remove the usual CGDCT interactions from the equation - much of the first episode and the latest one felt like a regular travel show that my mother might watch in her free time. I'm not surprised that this is autobiographical.

But again, that's not necessarily a bad thing. If anything, at least it's a pretty nice show to watch while eating.

Interest in the Composition of Japanese Visual Media

I've noticed that there's a bit of talk here and there at times about big named directors like Shinbo or Ikuhara in threads about there respective anime. Similarly there's "the /qa/ voice" and a few threads in the past made about favorite seiyuu's. With the more recent Seiyuu Radio thread I got a bit more interested in asking /qa/, how much do you pay attention to who's making the anime you enjoy and how conscious of their work are you while watching?

For myself I mostly know seiyuu, studios, composers, singers, and directors since those are more the big in your face part of anime, but I also can recognize a few character designers like Akio Watanabe/Amazuyu Tatsuki. I also know a few (non-director) animators by name, though I can't really tell who's who from just watching an anime like it's occasionally possible to do with directors/studios. Not even sure if it is possible.

Maybe it's a bit meta for some people, but I think it can be valuable and give you a greater appreciation of anime you really enjoy or lead you to finding other works with them included that you may also love. It can also be an interesting experience to go through the catalog of a director to watch how they grew over the years. A similar thing applies to seiyuu, and with them there's also the feeling of hearing a new voice you don't recognize that absolutely hits it out of the park and astounds you, like Utena from MahoAko.

This Kijin Gentoushou show is pretty good. The premise is a basic format, but the characters make it good. There's a mystery behind the source of each demon for each episode which adds a bit of mystery. It should be a boring show about a guy killing a demon-of-the-week with his Megaman powers, but it's actually not. The combat parts aren't very amazing, but that's not the focus. There are too many good shows this season.

What's it called when you watch something and enjoy it the first time around but for the sequel it's the exact same thing but you're just not feeling it. Because that's how I feel with Slime 300 part deux. It's getting me to watch it enough I guess but I'm not really feeling all that much. Is it just that there's increased competition this season that's pushing it out of mind or has the anime reclined without me realizing it? I think I should be enjoying this more.
R:9 / I:3
Mono is really reminding me of Joshiraku where half the episode (the JK SOL part) is really high quality and the other half (the hag tourism part) is super boring. It just feels like filler that doesn't make use of any of the characters they set up. Yuru Camp had the same problem too, but at least it spent the early parts building up the characters more and had a greater emphasis on atmosphere so it wasn't as pronounced. A couple cameos don't make me want to sit through a procession of location cuts with girls going "ohh, look at that."

It feels like the whole library of new stuff is just legacy franchises running on fumes. It's probably only better than the Wii U by merit of porting over all of its good games already. It's just baffling to me that this is one of their most successful consoles of all time when all the stuff that held up previous consoles is floundering hard this time around. Dread is the only thing left on my list I have any real hope for. Am I missing something or is the console really just being propped up by norms being able to play PC indies on the go?

Nope, that's it. I'm done. I can't take watching this anymore. I saw it topping the weekly charts on that one abema ranking for a bit, and I tried to see why, but I can't. It's irredeemable. It's not sexy, it's not that cute, it's not written well, the animation sucks, I hate every character. Were it not for the fact I saw people talking about it being like "Mushoku but better" I wouldn't have touched it. In what world is this better than Mushoku? In what world is this lauded as anything but a heaping pile of trash. Why did this get so much advertising and initial popularity? Thankfully it seems to be falling off a cliff on the popularity charts so that's one thing to put my mind at ease.

Lemmings

Have you ever completed the original games? I recently went back to the first one and finished the first difficulties quite easily. Some levels are way harder than the others in those ones though.

What's the appeal of these games? They seem quite simple as you only have a few options to pick from. But you usually need to find a way to delay the lemmings, build bridges and dig tunnels precisely while exploiting some behaviors like interrupting a digger with the builder skill.

I recommend using SuperLemmix as it adds QoL features like rewinding, turbo fast forward, hotkeys and replay saving while having a nice interface. It also includes all original levels released with the different versions of the game and retains classic gameplay. New skills like "swimmer" and "grenadier" are also available on NeoLemmix/SuperLemmix but they're made for custom levels, like the Lemmings 2 inspired ones, and are not available in the originals. For more information, read the official threads on Lemmings Forums!

Note: you might have fullscreen issues when playing through Wine, use a virtual fullscreen or play in windowed mode to avoid that issue.

I was wary of Lazarus from the start considering it looked like there was a strong western hand in it to the point the main releases were for the dub, but the action was well done so I gave it a chance. And what I get is an episode where a transgender talks to a black about how discrimination drove them to be homeless/criminals. Considering the premise of the show is "what if the government approved an unsafe medication that ended up killing everyone who took it after a few years" I really thought that it would only be political in the kooky conspiracy theory way you can laugh at. This just kills my interest.

Why do people ignore 60's and 70's Anime so much? I've been on a kick of older Anime and Showa Era Tokusatsu, and I've always been so confused as to why people would ignore these great shows. Music in Media

Do people really not take note of the OST of anime/games while enjoying them? I find it really hard not to notice since the sound in media I find to be one of the more important facets of its enjoyability. Like take this scene from the most recent episode of Nige Jouzu for instance, the OST during bursts with obvious Lupin influence and it makes sense given that Tokiyuki's playing thief and also making his big escape during the scene. The bombastic more samba-ish style fits very well with it and provides a more exciting scene due to it. If it weren't there and it was just some normal epic orchestral soundtrack the difference would be astronomical I feel. You wouldn't have the same lighthearted adventurish feeling to the scene that relays Tokiyuki's own emotions.

Similarly in something like SH2 after Pyramid head kills Maria after you make your escape without her, this plays https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcsySeJSVD0 . It's somber and slow, amplifies the guilt James feels and forces you to dwell on your actions even if it's one of the parts of the game that can't be avoided, you don't know that. The impact wouldn't linger as long without the OST pulling you back into it.

So I really have to wonder if people that say they don't notice actually don't notice, or if they just don't think too much on it.

I was worried about the new Geass because of that one post about it being not as good, but watching the first ep it was pretty much what I'd want out of Geass (maybe a bit more fanservice would be nice though). It was over the top, full of style, and most importantly fun. That's the one thing that made Geass the masterpiece it was, it was a masterclass in bringing fun to the audience and getting you excited. If this anime can bring back that feeling of hype and not get into the weeds about 'proper writing' this/ironic meta references that then it should be great.

Looking forwards to the rest of this. Also the CG wasn't bad at all.

According to the happenings thread >>101080 , Ash's journey in Pokémon is finally ending. It's pretty impressive. He was doing it back when I was a kid, but here we are in 2022 and it's finally over.
It brings lots of thoughts to mind apart from nostalgia.

- I wish I was into Pokémon more. It's like the /mlp/ people on 4chan, there's a bunch of dorks involved, even around my age, that still keep the magic alive. Sure, there's a bunch of kids as there should be, but it's interesting to see older people around making references that only people of a certain age would get. It's hard to find good internet losers.

-Names. People on the English internet generally refer to him as Ash (like this thread) and the localization names for each Pokemon as well. Some names are the same, but many of them aren't. One of my favorite Pokémon is Bulbausaur and not Fushigidane. With the internet full of arguments over everything regards translations, it's strange how this never seems to crop up.

-Great games. I haven't played the most recent ones, but I've never played one I didn't love. I think the newer games allow you to see the Types so you didn't need to throw moves around randomly, which was really getting to be a problem when there are 1000 of them instead of 150.

-The games get a LOT of various ROMhacks. There's even that one Touhou one that's not a hack but a standalone game. Not just simple hacks, either, but very involved stuff and you could spend thousands of hours playing them all. I should look into them more and try some out.

-Pokégirls. I think everyone knows this, but this series has some of the best character designs around and has been consistent about it since its inception. The Asuka vs. Rei thing never seemed that interesting to me in comparison to the girls in Pokémon. Even the 'girl of the week' in the anime had more interesting people in them. Duplica the girl with the Ditto that couldn't transform its face sticks out to me. Brock getting a crush on every girl really made sense.

-Just a fantastic style in general. There are places like https://hirespokemon.tumblr.com/ where you can see the old concept art and it's truly beautiful. Sugimori is a true genius. Also apparently his name is used by people as a keyword to improve the quality of AI art. A name synonymous with quality.

I learned how to type é on the keyboard waaaay back in the day just so I could type Pokémon. Alt + 0 + 2 + 3 + 3 !
So... do you have any strong Pokémon feelings? Are you a Pokémaniac?
R:4 / I:1
I really wanted to like this show and thought it might just start to touch on something interesting, but this episode was a total dumpster fire. Felt like I'd skipped three episodes at the start with how much context was missing, retarded plot twists, and made it painfully clear that this is a show about women loving their robot boyfriend and not any actual sci-fi stuff. Should have trusted my instincts and dropped it after the first episode.

I like how games like this are picking up steam despite their lack of super duper "modern" graphic. Makes the indie scene much more approachable to hobbyist devs and shows just how powerful fun gameplay can be towards how it's received. Maybe at some point in the future AAA takes notes, but I'd imagine not since they all want to be the forever money printer gacha like genshin because that's what raises stock value most. Feels like that industry, the AAA one, is due to collapse at some point soon... Then we'll probably see a huge surge in more indie studios popping up that'll be great for gaming in general.

The new DLC releases in just a day and a half, have you beaten Mohg yet so that you can access it? Supposedly it's an all around improvement on everything that was already great with the base game and the world is enormous for being a DLC. I'm really hoping for it to be filled with little secrets and interconnectivity that makes for a great open world and was something that I sorta felt needed more polish in ER itself. Factorio Space Exploration Server Thread

Server is now UP:

factorio.kissu.moe:34197

Legacy OP text We're fast-approaching the time of year where plenty of people are available, and there's a lull in media content to keep people entertained. So, I was thinking it'd be a great time to start up a Factorio server and play with Kissu! The plan is to play on a really big modpack known as Space Exploration which should ensure the server lasts a long while, and also that every person can be helpful even if they're new and it's late into the game. You see, this particular Factorio modpack revamps and expands Factorio beyond the typical endgame where you need to build a rocket out of the world, to where you will now need to escape the entire stellar cluster! Utilizing multiple planets and a space base in the process to reach this goal, Space Exploration forces the players to learn every aspect of it to keep their factory properly running. Especially with the added feature of bot decay which really changes the dynamic of the late game.

With all that said, I think it'd be good to get a head start and begin to discuss things related to Factorio related to optimizing Factories, or maybe even teaching new players/people that want to test things out how it all works. There's a lot to learn about the game and it can make it feel a bit daunting to new people at the start, so if you want to try starting up a world and seeing what makes sense and what doesn't initially I highly recommend it! Also remember that the server will be a group effort so there's no need to worry if you're not particularly good at one aspect since others should be able to help out as well!

FACTORIO SPACE AGE UPDATE!!!!

So it's been over a year since the expansion was announced on the Friday facts for Factorio >>113631 and ever since every Friday the team has had blog posts giving updates on the content and changes of the expansion. Some of them extremely promising and posted in this thread like >>114141 that shows how completely reworked everything is being to make base building an even more enjoyable experience than before. With that all coming to fruition monday, and the main theme of this thread's mod encompassing the expansion's theme. I think it's about time to start up the kissu factorio server again! This time we're not stopping until we beat the game.

Given the amount of new content and world management there looks to be in this expansion I think we'll have plenty of things for people to work on whenever to the effect that nobody will ever be left behind like in other games such as Terraria/Core Keeper, so it's NOT vital that you join in on the first day if that's a worry for you. We'll always need someone to upkeep train lines, expansion to different resources, bug extermination, and power maintanence. Then once we get to exploring different worlds we'll certainly be needing a lot of hands to make sure that the bases are all well defended and production flow is keeping up with demand.

I'll be available in the steam chat ( https://s.team/chat/NUIbnP7U ) to give anyone who may want to try out the game a copy, or you can pirate it if necessary.

You know when I think of the things I really love in games above anything else it's world design. It's why Hollow Knight is my favorite metroidvania and why that genre to me is one of my favorites. The Souls series has some pretty great world design of its own as well, with DeS, DS, BB, and ER being some of the best out there in the 3D space for world exploration. But then there's DS2 and DS3, the two least impressive of the series. I know it's conventional wisdom to normally take a big dump all over DS2 and passing marks are giving to DS3, but whenever I think back on the two of them, I can recall the layout of and how to manuever around the world of DS2 better than I can DS3. At least, in terms of variability. For some reason I always feel like DS3 is more a straight shot that is kinda boring because of it.

Am I just misremembering or is DS3 the weakest link in the Souls series that people give a pass for just being more like DS1 than DS2?

Surely, /qa/ recognizes this butt or on the other hand bulge, right? Nier and Automata were the only Yoko Taro games I'd actually played before deciding to go and finish each of them in their entirety. So what experience or opinions does /qa/ have with the series, or Taro in general? Automata's got an anime out right now that I've been putting on hold until I beat everything, but maybe people have seen and enjoyed it as well.

A serial killer manipulating one JK to kill her BFF by telling her her death wasn't an accident but her BFF's ploy to kill her. Only for the BFF to commit seppuku from the guilt of having accidentally killed the JK. Which then leads the JK to go to HELL for killing someone in the hotel... very much unexpected turn of events.

Manga Thread

So the DDDDD thread made me realize that kissu doesn't really have any threads dedicated to manga that I could find. The focus seems to be too much on seasonal anime. I realize that this is because manga is much harder to find/follow than seasonal stuff as there are no clear guidelines for it and Westerners don't read comics nearly as much as the Japanese do.

Anyway, what manga have you been reading recently? I just read the latest chapter of Shimeji Simulation a few days ago. As with anything made by Tsukumizu so far it is great. Definitely recommend it to everyone here and I do hope it eventually gets an anime adaption as well like SSR.

Rurouni Kenshi and Remakes

The new rurouni kenshin looks flippin GOOD (Although not on the level of Tsuioku good but that's impractical). Which is nice for me because depending on how much they adapt this is probably up in my top 3 greatest battle shounens of all time. Would be amazing if this goes beyond just re-adapting what the anime already covered and properly doing justice to the later manga arcs because that's the greatest fault of the original IMO. Although the new OP is definitely no sobakasu..... It's hard to top a 10/10 opening I wish the new one was at least comparable...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JQ8O5g2RXI

Anyways, with this I kinda wonder what /qa/ thinks about the uptick in higher budget remakes of older anime? I find it a bit worrying because of the precedent Hollywood set with it, but everything so far has been pretty quality (This, Urusei Yatsura, Mahoujin Guru Guru come to mind). Also as a positive it seems that these new remakes, if source material has updated since the original, are doing more the Brotherhood style of remake in which they adapt the source material more accurately and to its conclusion instead of just being an advertisement. In a way I think I'd actually prefer more of these since I hate the way so many older anime are just sitting in the "next season never" bin and if a full remake is what's needed to see them adapted to finish then so be it. I will happily eat up the Spice and Wolf remake if that's what'll be done as well.

Advertising faithfully vs Closure

It used to come up a lot more when an anime came out, whether anime should try to be more faithful to the source material when adapting even if they weren't going to cover the rest of the story of a manga. I think back then I was more partial towards the faithful camp, because I had more hope for sequels to good series back then that'd continue the series towards its more intended end.

Now though, that wish has been more or less fulfilled with most adaptations sticking close to the source material whether they end on a more conclusive note or not. But at times it feels like that was a monkey paw of sorts. Since now series simply last forever, and there's an infinite amount of different LN/Manga adaptations flowing out the gates each season with zero hope of getting a sequel. They'll always end feeling half-finished (because they are) and plenty of buildup there could be that's packed into the adaptation that has no relevance til later arcs is also left untouched. This leading to the entire anime somewhat suffering for it because it feels more like you wasted your time watching a "Read more by buying the source!" ad than anything. And honestly, when it comes to what studios are adapting nowadays, I feel like scriptwriters in these anime studios could do a far better job with the source material given to them than the majority of LN authors could do with their work.
R:5 / I:2
¥ let's take all the bad parts of Pikmin 3
¥ then take all the bad parts of Pikmin 2
¥ replace all the good parts with pointless RPG elements and constant overly long dialogue
¥ and stick it all together with a completely nonsensical story
¥ oh, and make sure to include a post-game mode that shows what the game could have been with good design decisions
¥ but make sure to ruin that too a few days in
What were they thinking? It's like they couldn't figure out how to make a full-length game so they just split into five different teams and stuck all the resulting minigames together to pad things out. It's super frustrating because the core gameplay is still fun and they clearly proved they could have made a much better game, but they just didn't and covered all the good stuff in as much tedium and distraction as possible.

The Case for Style Over Substance

I'm sure someone is going to immediately post a counterexample for some anime out there that struggles with its art/animation yet still tell a captivating story. It's just, despite the massive amount of anime I've seen I don't think there's ever really been a case where something without any sort of visual flair has ever wormed its way into my long-term memory or had any impact. And not visual flair necessarily in the sense of looking closer to Ghibli levels of blow your mind crazy animation, but any sort of work where you can feel a sort of personal touch from the creators, whether it be the animators or the director. It feels like it's almost a set in stone rule that average animation begets average quality at best. While good animation can elevate a poorer story. Like with Zenshuu this season, I don't really care for the story all that much but I'll still watch it because it looks nice and there's plenty of older OVAs too for which the stories are a complete mess but enthrall you enough with their presentation that you keep watching anyways.

With that said I really wanted to like Kuroiwa because it's got the kind of ecchi setups I always long for and a bit above generic cardboard cutout MCs. However, it just looks so bland everywhere. For all that it tries in its first episode meant to hook you, it can't muster enough to excite me more in its entire runtime than a single segment from a Highschool DxD ED. I just end up feeling more sad and disappointed in the end that I wasn't able to like it more and the wasted potential that could have been were it handled by a better studio. I think this is probably one of my main gripes with anime nowadays, there's too much hastily churned out series that contribute to some abstract looming ball of monotony that casts a shadow above anime as a whole to damper its image into one of mediocrity even when there's many cases of a few standout shows each season. I wish they'd just go away even if that meant less anime as a whole to watch. Maybe the animators could be concentrated into fewer projects to make better overall works.

How to catch up for Fate/Strange Fake

For anyone looking to jump on the Fate/ train for the new anime, here's a quick guide of what you probably want to go through. I'm also going to assume you're committed to this enough to dive head-in to the VN. If you're looking to test the waters first, you can try out the ufotable anime and then come back, there will be some spoilers you get from doing this but you probably already know most of them from hanging around otaku circles. Also, my knowledge isn't perfect so I may be missing some things.

Step 1: Read the VN
Download the Mirror Moon TL of the enhanced Realta Nua version with the ero scenes from the original game patched back in. The TL isn't perfect, or even really that good, but it's what everyone you talk to will be quoting and the official TLs for Fate have proven far worse in the past. Play through all three routes in order, try to get all the bad ends, but make sure you get Mind of Steel and Sparks Liner High as those "bad ends" are on par with actual alternate endings.
Adaptations: The stay night route technically has anime and manga adaptations, but both do the old VN adaptation thing of mashing routes together and are generally low quality in terms of art and animation.
The UBW route has an awful movie adaptation and a quite good TV anime. It does favor style over accuracy to the lore, which upsets some autists, but it's overall a solid adaptation and the only good way to see these characters in motion. There's also a manga, but it's pretty new.
The HF route has a movie trilogy which looks pretty, but rushes the plot way too much, ignores the VN writing to an excessive degree, and rewrites thinks to make Sakura look better. Only watch if you're a sakugafag or a Sakurafag. There's also a manga for this, which is really good at covering the whole story with great visualizations (especially for the lewd scenes), but it's got a lot more to cover before it's complete.
All of this is to say, you really have no choice but to read the VN because the only good substitute only covers the middle third and the game makes you do routes in order so you have to play that part anyway.

Step 2: Round out the core trilogy
Hollow Ataraxia, a fandisc VN, is the next step and the official not-quite-sequel. It introduces a lot of new stuff to the world. Anime never ever.
Zero is a LN prequel and completes the core Fate/ experience everything else is based upon. Some autists will complain that there are minor inconsistencies that make it non-canon to the game, but the game itself doesn't cover the "canon" ending its followups use so it doesn't fucking matter. The anime is pretty good and adds as much as it loses, so you can safely substitute it if you're tired of reading.

Step 3: Relevant spin-offs
Apocrypha is garbage in all its forms and has only the barest of connections to SF since it's a full-on alternate timeline. However, one of the characters (and his family) has his proper timeline version appear in the El-Melloi Case Files as an important character so it sort of leads into that. Also features Red Saber and Jeanne, two fan favorite Saber clones who show up a lot in fandom stuff.
Lord El-Melloi Case Files is pretty good and a few of its characters play major roles in SF. It also delves more into the world of magi and is the one spin-off you definitely should check out for this. Anime is solid, but incomplete so you probably want the LNs.
Tsukihime is a VN from before Fate that takes place in an alternate world line with very different rules than in Fate, but it does cover elements of the lore that nothing else on this list touches on that become relevant in SF. There is no anime, there never was, it does not exist.
You are now equipped to watch Strange Fake, but you can also check out the LNs or manga for it if you're eager to keep going. Both are good.

Path of Exile

The new league starts in a few hours so I thought I'd advertise the /qa/ mansion guild here in case anyone wants to play it. We're around 6-7 right now, but I have enough guild slots so that we can accommodate pretty much the whole /jp/ spinoff population that still plays games (upper limit of 30-ish if I'm assuming generously). The bulk of us are going to be playing on softcore-ruthless so I'd recommend doing that too if you want to reap the benefits of a shared use stash. But, anyone that just wants a bunch of free space can join to use it in normal/hc too. We have a good deal of space https://files.catbox.moe/b6cox8.jpg so poor NEETs can enjoy the convenience of paying without needing to spend a dime.

So if you're interested post your userid or character name ITT if you want me to invite you, we're fine with anyone that's not a complete subhuman.

Early 90s kid here
For some reason I don't remember any popular Japanese flash games during the early 2000s
Did they make any good flash games back then?

Are there any games that can properly depict war in its extremely stressful and horrific light? Or will we only really be able to to get that sort of experience made eventually through VR? I feel like, thinking about the potential of AI, this could be one of the few genres that AI would be almost necessary to properly make a less gamey more overbearing experience.

I'm going to reread Higurashi from the beginning after completing 7/8 of the original arcs then stopping several years ago - I don't remember why. However the console arcs seem complicated and I'm unsure of the order in which I should read them. Going with how the series was originally released, I feel I should read the original 8, then Rei, then the console arcs in chronological order.

Please, give me your advice.

Anyone interested in a match of Advance Wars DoR? I used to play it a lot when I was a kid and apparently there's a browser version of it now.

I made a lobby with the name qa and password set to 1123. I'll wait for a bit to see if someone joins. You may need to register an account but you don't need to link an email.

STALKER 2 is out now! Has /qa/ played the previous games? Are you going to play this one? Initial reviews seem very positive.

It's funny how Oshi no Ko seems to have forgotten that Ruby existed, which is kind of good. But, I feel like Kana isn't getting enough focus. I think it's obvious to everyone that she's the best character.
When Kana isn't on screen the other characters should say "Hey, where's Kana?"

Now that there's a bunch of people that have at least seen it in the stream, Undead Unlock is pretty amazing, huh? Seems like a nice high budget production. I haven't been excited for an action-y anime in a while

Spice and Wolf

Kissu people are talking Spice and Wolf quite a bit lately in relation to the remake, so I decided to watch the original. I'm still in the process of marathoning it, but I can definitely see why people like it so much. I avoided it because of the merchant stuff which I HATE, but the parts unrelated to spreading human misery are very good!
"Why did you make the thread before you finished it?" you might ask. Well, because my neck hurts from laying in bed watching it for 6 hours and I don't want to go into spoiler territory in the OP.

Anyway, I figure a centralized place to talk about the show and manga and whatever else might be a good idea since people are so eager to talk about it (including me now!)

If vern likes Chinese culture so much, how come he hasn't played the new Taiwanese metroidvania to show his support for their indie studios? Or does the sight of a fox make the vermin scatter?

Dragon's Dogma 2

Played DD2. Some fps issues in the main city, and at infrequent moments out in the world, but aside from that was at a frequent 60+ with RTX on. From what I can see the whole "Mostly Negative" thing on steam is from people getting outraged over mtx that are basically the same thing that Capcom's done in all their other games and people that have more major performance issues. Aside from that I've been having a lot of fun, the game's good. Opening isn't as bombastic as the first though so some people may take issue with that, and there's a bit of minor nitpicks that people may have, but on the whole it's still the same good DD gameplay that people know and love. Supposedly with a much longer story and bigger map if leaks are to be believed.

I made a Fern pawn as you can't make loli ones anymore so Schierke wasn't possible. She got a fair bit of usage so far.

Would you say that Skyrim was actually a good game?

Just finished the main campaign for Space Marine 2 and it was almost great. I liked the first one and this game felt like I was playing a sequel that released only a few years after the first one, in a good way, for about 85% of the game. My primary complaint, the main campaign content feels too short for a $60 game. I finished it in 9hrs on the 2nd highest difficulty. Also the ending of the campaign felt half baked compared to the rest of the game; not that it was terrible but it become a lot cheesier and the story beats seemed like the authors were working on time budget and had to wrap things up.

I wished the tomb world was more awoken and we got to fight the necrons too. There's an audio log, collectable that even suggests as much should be happening.

Are you good at catching references in media?

I'd like to see Greg Egan's Orthogonal trilogy adapted into an anime.
The setting is a universe with an alternate law of physics whose consequences include that
¥ light of different colours travels at different speeds and there is no maximum speed of light
¥ liquids largely don't exist as a state of matter, they're all explosively unstable
¥ temperature acts weirdly (I didn't quite understand it from the books and Greg's website but it seems like the characters use gases as a way to dump arbitrarily high amounts of heat energy from their bodies)
¥ the direction of the arrow of time is determined by local conditions (entropy I guess) and in the greater 4-dimensional universe, the worldlines of objects can go in any direction. You can be hit by a tiny meteorite whose worldline is perpendicular to yours, which you will experience as something traveling infinitely fast, punching a great hole through your stuff and massively damaging it
¥ related to the above, it's possible for time-reversed matter to interact with ordinary matter and both see time running backwards (e.g. objects reforming from a broken state) for the other
and more.

The consequence of the alternate physics most important to the plot is that it is possible for a spacecraft to accelerate away from a planet so that it is travelling infinitely fast, i.e. 'sideways' in 4D space relative to that planet, then turn around and return, such that a short time passes for the planet's inhabitants but many generations pass on the spacecraft. (In our universe, it's the other way around, a lot of time can pass for Earth but the spacecraft ages less)
The plot is a multi-generational drama centered on precisely such a spacecraft, which the inhabitants of the planet built to buy time against a world-ending catastrophe.

Now, a problem I have with Greg Egan's books is that I never really like the characters, I'm only there for the math and physics. The characters tend to be annoying, unlikeable 'Young Adult protagonist' snarkers, and I never care about their stupid emotional problems. The plots mostly aren't interesting to me (Orthogonal's plot is one of his better ones, he successfully portrays the epic scope of the mission). When it comes to religion and woo, the author has the attitude and zeal of a reddit atheist transplanted from the 00s and so he'll write about a Victorian-analogue society inhabited by people who have never so much as thought about religion (because the author has resolved to never include religion in his stories), not that this stops them from being backwards and unenlightened relative to the protagonist who fucking loves science. Which brings me to the point about adapting it to an anime. In the anime adaptation, you could improve the characters by cutting the YA snarkiness and replacing it with anime earnestness. And after making that fix, please make all the female characters oppai loli mini giantesses (Pic semi-related. Females in the setting are already canonically larger than the males, the species has important differences from humans and Earth life in general. IIRC there is a scene where a female chases down a male and pins him, wanting to be bred by him, and that is where the idea entered my mind and would not leave.) The setting is one that would bring a lot of eye candy to the screen, with its multicoloured star trails, explosions, glowing rainbow plants, spaceships, relativistic effects and so on.

What's with the recent influx of shows using these anime-character-on-real-background OPEDs? I can't help but associate the style with 2000s DeviantArt teens, so it feels strange to me that we've had four or five of them in the last couple seasons.

Do you like the style or does it feel as out of place as the aforementioned internet posts always did?
R:114 / I:45
Every time I see an artist that draws Blue Archive it's always lolis. Is the game just that chock full of them that it's all there is to draw? It really tempts me to try it out, but my distaste for gacha is still stronger. Only by a little bit...

You're watching the four gorgeous shows currently airing, right? It's amazing to see these every week. Dungeon Meshi and Urusei Yatsura extend into Spring, but I'm definitely going to miss Undead and Frieren. I feel like the "anime is terrible since ####" people really need to actually pay attention.

Is another moe anime that's both celebratory and satire on otaku culture like Lucky Star still possible in this day and age? Feels like the celebratory part is still possible, but everything that's of that vein seems to either avoid any serious self parody and is more feel good than laughs.

Let's Play Dungeon Travelers 2-2!

Alright, so I'm going to make an attempt at a Let's Play thread of what will surely be a fantastic game. I played the original Dungeon Travelers 2 on Vita and it was the last physical game I ever bought (remember when we could buy and own media?) It's truly an amazing game for many reasons. Fantastic characters, great classes, great boss battles and spectacularly frustrating dungeons. Its sequel, Dungeon Travelers 2-2, came out years later, but unfortunately it never received a translation.
Now, a decade later it did received a surprise translation and release on PC. It was going to be on Steam, but those prudes backed out. I'm sure it's related to the lewdness, as Steam only has room for stuff like Sex with Furry Hitler 2 or War Crime Simulator 2023. Instead it got a release on one of those gacha/freemium sites where it feels like you get malware just by loading the page, so I will instead be using the version found on nyaa.
If Aquaplus actually wanted money I'd be willing to buy figures and stuff from them, but nope, they don't. If I traveled to Japan I could get some crappy keychains if I timed it right and found one of their "pop up" stores, but that's about it. Okay, back to the game:

This game is a "what if" scenario at the end of Dungeon Travelers 2 if the final battle was lost. There's a Demon Queen that wants to corrupt and conquer humanity and blahblah that part isn't very exciting. Since the characters are the of the highlights (Aquaplus is involved after all) I'll give a brief introduction of each character before I start the game.

Was thinking about reading all of Go Nagai's works but then realized it'd probably be impossible given just how much he wrote. It's pretty insane compared to almost any other mangaka out there.

What are the most notable ones to check out though? I've read Devilman, some Harenchi Gakuen, some Mazinger, Cutie Honey, and all of Getter (although does that really count?) Was considering watching and maybe reading Dororon Enma-kun next (OVA/Remake TV) since the OP was cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIsQqRoyKqo

https://www.pcgamer.com/wow-classic-is-getting-official-hardcore-mode-servers/

What does /qa/ think about the idea of hardcore MMOs? Having seen a bit about this in my Youtube recommends, it looks kinda fun and engaing. Classic wow is by no means the hardest, or even that challenging an MMO, but I think that just lends itself very nicely to a hardcore mode. It encourages a bit more social interaction during questing to not die trying to solo along with encouraging better communication during dungeons/raids since nobody wants to lose their character. Also I'm a bit of a fan of hardcore modes myself, so I was wondering if kissu might be interested in giving it a shot once the servers come out?

Do you have a game or show or anything else that you experienced when you were younger that has left a permanent impression on you? Not just nostalgia, but you feel as though it altered your way of thinking or what it is you desire.
I'm aging myself a bit with this one, but two prominent ones for me are the two Lunar games. They're JRPGs that I first played on the PSX. They originally came out on SegaCD, but it was wisely remastered for a console that more than 5 people had. I did go back and play the SegeaCD versions on emulator back in the day, though. I even had some Lunar avatars that I still have on my drive!

The main themes of the games are adventure and love. At its core the games are very simple both in gameplay and story scope, but its charm is the unmistakable purity of it. I think these two games gave me desire for the fairytale romance that you can only see in fiction, and of course the corny "defeating the bad guy with friendship and love" cliché. It's just so beautiful and pure. If someone were to ask me what paradise is like, I would point to this kind of thing. It is the pure idealization of human emotion.

Someone might have also noticed that the art looks familiar, and that's because the character designer eventually worked on Idolm@ster. Takane in particular really has the face, so she's a bit of a weakness of mine when it comes to 2D idols, even when I don't really partake in that culture.

Of course, the games do have issues. Today I can appreciate the fact that Working Designs went overboard with the localization process and should have been respectful to the source material. The main story is fine, but the random NPCs make jokes and references to pop culture that they really shouldn't.

Welcome to /amv/, a board for more involved discussion of media.
This board is intended to accommodate nuanced and lengthy threads, but is very much NOT intended to work as containment. Silly or spontaneous threads will remain on /jp/ and it's expected that they will continue to lead to conversations of their own. For the best experience, you need to visit all of kissu!
OP must start a conversation and should make a thread with the expectation of supporting the thread for a period of time.
