With each episode of Kowloon I'm more and more convinced that they're in a simulation of sorts created by that object in the sky. I don't know what happened to Kowloon, if the memory preservation device has just let them demolish the actual town or if there was an accident in the real world that caused a rush to it. But I think if there was some accident it may be why Kudou blames himself for Reiko's death. Otherwise my theory is that Kudou with Hebinuma and Gwen have some sort of administrator role in the simulation that resulted in Kudou doing something to Reiko's memory/past.

Aside from just theorizing, it does let me ponder the theme of identity that seems to be prevalent in each character, especially when it comes to the supposed copies. I'm still a bit confused by them so I think I'll read the manga to get a grasp on that part better. Like is Yaomei the real or the copy? Kujirai in particular constantly trying to measure herself up against the past Reiko she doesn't know is an interesting struggle. I don't think Kudou will ever be able to come along to her though, since Reiko seems so ingrained in his memory and he carries such grief and regret over her loss that any love or affection towards Kujirai just creates causes him to remember her.

I think this guy is probably the big "bad" guy, even if not on purpose. Maybe co-bad guy? Seemed like it was the case since, uhh.. episode 3 or something when he casually mentioned rebuilding the city or whatever it was. He's mentioned that he "killed" the main girl, but it doesn't seem like something he did directly so I'm thinking he feels remorse over his role in this Kowloon memory/parallel reality thing. Maybe he rebuilt something incorrectly causing people to die or get their existence wiped out or something?
I'm thinking the setting is Kowloon City for a specific reason. I mean, it's a cool thing that happened in real life, but it was torn down like 30 years ago. Also everyone looks like a retro-ish anime character which is surely on purpose. Lots of people called that place their home and they were very protective and proud of that bizarre slice of organized chaos. There's the strong general theme of wanting to live in the past and hide from the current reality.
Also lots of gay stuff. I'm not sure what that symbolizes.

Not sure if I'm gonna keep watching this. I picked it up for the cake romance but instead got some sci-fi plot I don't care much about.

The main idea of Kowloon Generic Romance is nostalgia. It's about love for a place that no longer exists and how fond memory can distort the reality of it all. Have you never sat and wondered why this Kowloon City is a such a gentle and kind place? All unlike the grueling reality it was.
Kowloon City itself is a sort of mythical, magical place, in that it very much has a lot of nostalgia and strong emotions attached to it, even by people who have never been and only know from photos, such as the ones published in City of Darkness.

There is no other place quite like it, because everywhere else still exists, different, but still there. This change is also something that Kowloon Generic Romance highlights early on, as the once lawless Kowloon City is transformed into a theme park attraction of sorts.
