If you think about it after the fact, it's not unheard of for a VN's story to go this route, but it still came out of left field that two of the characters didn't event exist?
Were the other characters even interacting with Kamome or is this a Fight Club scenario?
Started the show thinking it was just a SOL VN adaptation, but it's piqued my interest with the latest episode.

I know that Summer Pockets is an older work before Key started being less good, but it's nice to know that if they try to stick with Japanese mythology and don't stray too far into modernism, then they're still as good as always
