Way to ruin a good show.

Was the highschool arc really as shit as I predicted it'd be?

We just entered into the arc with the latest episode, and they've broken the immersion. They show the story as a play performed in a highschool. It was a total shit show when it came to immersion, you'd be watching an intense battle scene, not knowing if the character will survive or not, then the shot pans out to show a dumb prop battle.
Still, I'm trying to stay positive with how the story goes...
Probably would have been better had they had a better transition from the samurai days to highschool days, but it was all so abrupt. They continued the last episode's story, but now under the pretense that it's a play showing in a highschool.

Good old Japanese bait and switch. Can't be making any serious messages or you might start rocking the boat

I like the direction the show is going even if it's not executed in the most graceful manner. It fits the theme of "the feelings of the past" need to be respected and honored; particularly strong feelings need to respected even more.

Unfortunately I glanced at this thread before watching the episode so my expectations were tainted by preconceptions.
I do think it was jarring and definitely a major error in storytelling, but I guess it demonstrates how the old stories from the original time were kept alive. Or maybe the writer went on a tangent due to a love of that live theater stuff. Somehow Oshi no Ko made an entire season of it and there are anime shows about girls doing theater shows in front of people. I don't get it, personally, theater just doesn't seem appealing to me during the age of movies and animation.
I still like the show a lot, but that was a misstep.

I didn't have any issue with it. I do kind of wish they'd shown snippets of the intervening years instead of one big timeskip, but the ending hints that he just kind of hung around with the same people for decades and there's not much time left in the show. This was a good way of showing how their lives were carried on the the present day as he gears up for the final confrontation with imouto-san.

Still don't know why he's a DK though.
