This Kijin Gentoushou show is pretty good. The premise is a basic format, but the characters make it good. There's a mystery behind the source of each demon for each episode which adds a bit of mystery. It should be a boring show about a guy killing a demon-of-the-week with his Megaman powers, but it's actually not. The combat parts aren't very amazing, but that's not the focus. There are too many good shows this season.

It's definitely better than I was expecting. I thought it would crash and burn after the crazy first episode, but it's staying pretty grounded and telling good stories. I'm glad they give each case at least a couple episodes so we can dig in to the emotions of the situation before the action resolves things.

It really says something that it can pull a "humans are the real demons" and not have me immediately drop the show.

There really was. The saturday streams are loooooong.

This really is a fantastic show.
Ostensibly it's a show about a demon hunter, but he's more of a detective and you hear get a lot of story in each episode. I'm such a sucker for this kind of thing. Episode six was a climax to a plot that had been going on for a few episodes and it was done in such a beautiful way. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it just felt right and rewarding to see it play out.
Even episode 7 where there was no demon at all was satisfying to hear the man talk about his younger days and a friend that was in love.
I'm not sure what it is that determines whether or not I can tolerate or enjoy a situation where people simply talk, as there are many shows where my mind drifts away but a few shows where I stay at full attention. This show is definitely the latter.

Man, what a great show. I really need to think of a better way to describe this kind of show that I like, it's the format akin to Kino's Journey where there's a central character but other characters steal the focus for an episode or two when it's their time for their story to be told. The surprise of the episode 8-9 wouldn't have been a surprise if I paid more attention or had more Japanese mythological "common sense".
I do know of the Japanese concept that well-used objects gain a soul but it just wasn't in the foreground of my thought processes of what could be going on. I have a feeling I'm missing the subplot with the prostitute, or rather that it's making reference to previous things in the story that I've forgotten.
Seems like there's a major story change with episode 10...

The end of the first cour was pretty good. Not quite as emotional as some other arcs, but decent enough. The action and story was good.
After a hiatus of a couple weeks the next one has started... with a flashback. Bleh. I guess it's good as a refresher and to remind the viewer of the past that was mostly there back in the beginning of the first episode.
But, then it skipped ahead seven years.
All in all, a very neutral episode that didn't move the story ahead at all, just establishing things again.

Perry-san!
It's kind of interesting how they're tying demons and samurai together as representing 'old Japan'.
I'm still a few episodes behind, but I wonder if this is setting up the conclusion.

I keep thinking I'm watching this show because it's good, but the conbini scene in the latest episode reminded me I'm watching it for the lulz.

Well, I think it's good. It's just that the modern day stuff is very... tacky? Maybe they'll justify it eventually, but currently it certainly clashes with the theme.

Not really. I think this was the first time it was mentioned, at episode 15. It's possible that it's an entirely self contained plot that's never brought up again, although that does seem somewhat unlikely.

This episode was depressing. This is what I was looking for when I started this show.
Perhaps to that end, all the episodes before this one were needed to make us feel the loss as well.
I really hope Jinya doesn't just disappear and leave Ofuu with/and his child forever.... but he can't really come back either.
Maybe they run away together!...

I wouldn't say it was too depressing, but certainly emotional. It was an enviable way to live and die. I do feel bad for Ofuu, but, bleh... Episode 16 with that demon that imparted that illusion of Jinya having a family life surely meant something, right? He's not going let Ofuu be alone for centuries, right? Right? I wonder if the kid is human or demon...

Episode 20 was nice, although a bit drawn out. With 4 episodes to go, I can't help but feel they need to be moving things along faster than this.
Ofuu truly is cute and wonderful. Jinya, you better....

Indeed. The best wife a man can have.

This is where obsessive screenshot taking comes in handy. They were in episode 15 both in flashback at at their current older age. In the past he talks of demons and humans living together.
In the present a demonic sword lead to him killing his wife and then Jinya assimilated the sword.

Right. That's what I thought. Didn't realize that was a flashback.

Come to think of it, this show has lots of good women in it. They have that mature, graceful beauty to them. That yamato nadeshiko thing, right?
Well, maybe not that one bratty girl from the first half.

Natsu? I'd say she was pretty tame for a preteen. I liked her, sadly there probably won't be any more of her.

Yeah, her. I kind of struggle to remember characters from episodes 3 months ago.
I didn't dislike her, I just mean she wasn't the mature beauty type. But, she might grow into one. I can't remember if anything happened to her, didn't she just disappear after the time skip? Looking at screenshots again and I'm reminded of how Jinya and her drifted apart, I guess she would tie into the current inner conflict of his.
Or she's just never seen again...

Some heavy budget constraints this episode. I thought my media player had froze a couple times, but nope they just didn't animate things. I hope that means they're focusing more on the final two episodes, otherwise this is a bad sign.
ARGH Why didn't they get together?! I guess there's room in the future since they live forever, but come on! If the adopted girl is human, though, she'll never have a mom...

Also adult Natsu is sexy! I'm glad they didn't forget her, even if it seems to be a minor scene simply showing that she's still around.

Decided against better judgement to see what 4/a/ was saying about a show I like. (I never do this for obvious reasons)
They have screenshots of things I didn't notice since I was watching on a dim screen at night.
Worse than the uncolored background here >>10417 is a transparent layer still left here in this frame.
They must have REALLY rushed on this episode.

Finished it finally. I was procrastinating a little bit because I didn't want it to end.
I figured they weren't going to "resolve" things, and I guess it's true that they didn't, but at the same time there was indeed a type of resolution and I feel satisfied. A major story arc ended at episode 22, so 23 and 24 were more like a bonus chapter.
It wrapped things up very nicely, involving the different eras in a way that felt natural with a new character.
In usual Japanese ending fashion some things are just implied, but with the way Jinya speaks I guess it's obvious that Ofuu and of course his daughter are long gone. But, he still finds joy in living his long life in finding new people that may his life worth living. A very obvious analog to getting older in real life, which is something I'm starting to relate to more and more.

I'm really going to miss this show and seeing what the wonderful cast of characters was getting up to each week. The women were cute in a very endearing and idealized yet authentic way, and it also filled me with those "I wish I had a daughter" feelings some of these shows are really good at imparting. The demon slaying may be the overt focus, but it's the human parts that made it great.
The only flaw is there there were some budget issues at times and there are quite a few loose threads left, but I guess there's only so much you can do with 23 episodes of a book adaptation. I can't say I have any plans to the source material, if it's even available in English. Seems like there's a manga adaptation as well, so maybe I could look into that.
I just lack the motivation to get into manga or novels, though, when compared to the visual and audio splender of anime.
So I guess this is goodbye to Kijin Gentoushou as I don't think it will get another season.

>with the way Jinya speaks I guess it's obvious that Ofuu and of course his daughter are long gone.
Of course Nomari is long gone, but I can't help but wonder about Ofuu. You'd expect her to live as long as Jinya. Did they ever meet up again during that ~150 year stretch after all their old human contacts passed away? They must have gotten lonely at some point.
Maybe I just find the idea of two fellow travelers on the long road of history too romantic to pass up on, but I can't imagine them forgetting about each other. Even if Jinya never reached out, Ofuu seems like the type to arrange an "accidental" encounter.

Yeah, they really were building a great rapport and it seemed like they were made for each other as relatively normal demons with long lives. I'm guessing they meet up again at some point in the novel, as it seems too significant to brush off. It's a story hook that will keep people wondering, but it's all out there somewhere in a book if someone wanted to find out.
I wonder how far the manga adaptation is since it started in 2021.
