As much as I'm enjoying Apocalypse Hotel, I'm not thrilled about how the overall tone has shifted. The first couple episodes had a strong feeling of melancholy as the leftovers slowly declined, but the tanuki sticking around have turned it into a goofy comedy. The last episode in particular seemed to invalidate the passage of time element and basically took away the sense that the robots would eventually end up a state of disrepair. The sense of loneliness and isolation is also gone now that there are always guests to tend to and people to talk with instead of just repeating an endless routine with a bunch of beepboopbots. I really think keeping the shitters around this long was a mistake, it's probably impossible to get back what the first couple episodes had at this point.

That's the impression I got too. I thought it would turn out to be more episodic with a new guest(s) every episode, and the overarching story following the passage of time. I mean, nothing spells out the concept of inevitable decay like a room of rusted out dead robots. The Tanuki were fine in the episode they came in, but they really should've left, or been placed later where having them stick around could work for changing the pace of the plot; but as it was, it felt way too early. I also wish they'd spend more time with alien aliens and how they adapt to accommodate them. The plant was great, but they spent only a few minutes on the amoebas and spent the rest of the episode making whisky with the shitters.

Yeah, I've been contemplating dropping it too. Shame that the first episode felt so good.

Were you looking for more of a Girls Last Tour feel then?
That's very hard to pull off well...

This show has a very niche premise anyways.

Yeap, by managing to create a new whisky that inherits the founder's spirit, and by learning to communicate with the second batch onwards, they've established the possibility of renewal without any of the earlier obstacles. The action scenes of the previous episode were also indicative of changes in direction, not just the humor.

There's still the issue of humanity being McMotherfucking dead, but at this point it's impossible to imagine anything but them getting over it.

>That's very hard to pull off well...
Nonsense, it's as easy of porting one into the other.

Ponko is very cute and I like seeing her do her best to overcome her tanuki-ness and be a good person. But, I agree that the atmosphere has completely changed and it's certainly not the same show as episode 1 or even 2. The way that Yachiyo didn't care about the manager enough to stop them from touching the alcohol is perhaps emblematic of the change from serious to whimsical. It's intentional, surely, but I'm not sure if it's going to bring forth any sort of self-reflection. It's hard for things to be serious with a bunch of tanuki assholes being the comedic relief every 20 seconds, which previously things were intentionally isolated and somber.

If you need help on how to get through the hotel, check out the enclosed instruction book.

The tonal changes are definitely... Interesting. At first I was expecting something like Planetarian: a steadily falling apart Hotel being slowly worked back to functionality, or something like that. Maybe exploration for parts to keep the hotel running? But then with the first alien it kind of seems like it might go in a Kekkai Sensen or Space Dandy direction with a constant clash of unique aliens coming and going. And now the Tanukis have settled in.

I like the Tanukis. They're fun and Ponko is cute.

is there a bigger case of an OP/ED outliving its source? it's incredible how popular sugar step continues to be but i hardly ever see the series pop up anywhere

Heh...

Anyway, on slightly more serious note, i still enjoy it and feel like every episode has clear focus on something they want to convey, but i can agree that it has changed it's overall tone a bit.
It kind of feels a bit like they've mixed two different plot ideas in one. Robots taking care of a hotel, while lost in unknowns trying to figure out how to go on, it veins of Girls last tour. And a whimsical family of alien tanukis, crash landing on a long deserted Earth and comically trying to adapt to the unknown world they've found themselves in, with the various leftover from the humans.
I kind of like the fun clash it gives, but i wouldn't mind more slower episodes focusing on just the robots again.
