What do you think about the new idea in fast food for "surge pricing" or "dynamic pricing" on food? For an industry primarily built on the model of serving cheap slop it feels fairly antithetical towards the customer's interest to implement such a system when people are already complaining about the price of food. There's no esteemed reputation for these places that would make someone choose them over any other available restaurant in the vicinity if they're not vastly cheaper so I have no idea what these people are thinking even suggesting this.
R:56 / I:11 What's your language's orthography like? Everyone knows English and French are legendarily bad while runes are a beautiful kind of horror, but there's a lot of other systems out there with their own peculiarities. Spics are always ready to bring up Spanish, but it's actually not that good for anything outside of northern Spain. A lot of consonants got simplified, and now it can be hard to tell whether you should write something with C, S, or Z. Same with H being mute.

R:11 / I:2 I don't know about Kissu, but I've always heard that the reason for philips head screws is that they're made not to strip, and were a replacement for flat head screws. I have literally never come across a stripped flat head screw, meanwhile I find stripped flat head screws all the time.
What's up with that.

R:12 / I:2 I went to my local library today and got a library card. To my surprise, it entitled me to free membership for some major newspapers as well as magazines. More importantly, as I mentioned in >>>/qa/117881, it also allowed me to link my library card to Libby. Libby is a free app that lets you check out ebooks and audiobooks through your library. OverDrive on Kobo e-readers lets you do the same thing. As far as Kindles go, it seems you can link your Kindle to Libby and then send ebooks to your Kindle that way (unfortunately you can't do everything on your e-reader itself, like with Kobo e-readers). I was a bit surprised to learn that my address was excluded from the broader regional library system of the metropolitan area I live in, but my local library system consisting of just 5 libraries still boasts ~50K ebooks and ~15K audiobooks. All in all, I highly recommend that my fellow Kissu frens head to their library and get a library card so you can read lots of ebooks! It's certainly a lot less hassle than having to track down pirated copies of books or having to pay for a copy. It's also shut-in friendly since you don't need to leave your house to check out books since everything can be done through the app or your e-reader!
R:12 / I:3 My cat is sitting on my bed and wants to sit in the very middle. They're currently sitting between my legs, but this position is very uncomfortable. I would move them but they fell asleep...
R:12 / I:1 Anonymous was talking about how search results have gotten worse due to SEO and AI articles, which reminded me of this article I read. In no small part, the reason why places like Amazon's search have gotten so bad is because of user retention metrics and shopping. In essence, by the results being worse you will look for longer and may end up buying something that is inferior, and then come back to buy something else when what you had originally bought didn't live up to your expectations. Search engines like Google have the same incentives, but instead of directly selling you things they want to serve you ads.
R:7 / I:4 If we ever meet aliens, ones that can see with eyes similar to our own, eink will probably be important for interspecies communication. I remember watching a video a while ago that said that different mammals have different levels of photoreceptivity so the point at which persistence of vision makes flashing images feel fluid is different. For humans, it seems to vary a lot and depend on light levels; 24 FPS on a projector is comfortable to view for most people, 50Hz or 60Hz on a CRT TV was comfortable to view, but below 75Hz on a CRT monitor was uncomfortable, and so on. I vaguely recall that cats had a persistence of vision shorter than humans so they required a higher "frame rate" source to view it properly, otherwise it just looked like flashing nonsense that left them disinterested. Dogs had a higher persistence of vision and so required a lower frame rate than humans.
So, basically, it's the duty cycle of the source that affects whether it's comfortable to view or not, I suppose. At any rate, that's why I think eink or similar displays would be important: they are physically moving ink within capsules to create an image, and so there is no refreshing of the page to view it. As such, hypothetically, both humans and aliens would be able to read from such displays equally well. Although... If they're like dinosaurs and their vision is based on movement then both are probably insufficient. I'm not really sure how you would create a "motion display" short of vibrating pixels somehow or something idk.

R:8 / I:0 When driving on the highway I often spot squarish looking bodies of water. Too large to be a pond and too small to really be called a lake. I wonder if these are man-made (and if so, for what purpose?) or if there's just an abundance of oddly shaped bodies of water.

R:3 / I:1 With some frequency in news and online I hear about "factory farming", but from my travels throughout the East Coast, Appalachia, the Midwest, South, and Southwest I have yet to actually see anything that looks like a factory farm. Cows in particular I've never seen anywhere other than modestly sized to large ranches. That said, I have been to chicken farms and can recall them being in cages to lay eggs and then their eggs would roll down metal tracks into a collection basket. I haven't really seen any pig farms. Sheep I've seen in Appalachia on small ranches. Horses you see everywhere on ranches (but obviously Americans don't eat horse). I wonder where all the factory farms are...

R:10 / I:1 This book I'm reading keeps using the word, "stave." I can't tell if they just wanted to use a different word than "club" or if they're under the impression that the plural of "staff" is "staves".
R:1 / I:0 Saw a plot where a gas station had been. Woody vines had overtaken the price display, which had long since lost its face and electronic innards just leaving a square metal scaffold. Brown plants broke up the concrete where the parking lot had been. Awfully melancholy scene.
R:1 / I:0 Been looking at a lot of telephone poles. Most of them just have typical assortment of three cables, presumably for split phase + neutral (I think?) electricity, but some have a third or fourth cable not held by ceramic insulators like the rest. Wonder if those additional cables are genuine telephone lines or something else.
R:3 / I:2 I drove over a bridge today and looked out at a pretty wide river, flanked by forests on its banks. All of the trees had shed their leaves so the forests had the appearance of a tumbleweed.
R:5 / I:3 Speaking of bridges, the other day I drove past some construction being done on a highway interchange. From what I understand, newer elevated highways are made entirely of concrete spans, but this one I saw had steel members supporting the road above it. I wasn't sure if it was a new steel supported bridge, or maybe maintenance being done on an older highway.

IPTV stuff
This is probably too niche of a hobby, but that's what the seasonal boards are for right?
Anyway, linear television from around the world is available to anyone with a media player that can support playlists and an internet connection. It can be a fun thing to do when you're bored and having nothing to watch.
There's a lot of filler channels run by governments and stuff, but there's some cool and odd stuff as well. For example, even though I know little-to-no Japanese, Fuji TV usually is entertaining enough as the programming is usually positive. The J-sports channel have call-in shows about obscure sports late at night.
With how saturated mass media is these days, it surprised me that a lot of isolated, remote countries like the aforementioned North Korea or Mongolia actually have all their channels go off the air (or offline, in this case?) and I'm looking forward to seeing what the television in those countries is like.

R:52 / I:4 For some months now, dozens of spiders have started to pop up all around the house. They're mostly found in the places you'd usually expect, but also in some really odd spots: between the drying dishes, inside my shoes, in the small space between a window's frame and the wall... In the shower, as I write this, there are about five of them one above the other in a corner of the bathroom. (I take care not to hurt them, because they're cool.)
I dunno, it's just very funny and I enjoy it. Wanted to share it, even though I can't take any good pics of them.

R:43 / I:8 Americans eat apples with WAX on it. I always thought it was weird that they looked so red and shiny in comparison to the ones we have in my country. Turns out the excessive redness is due to GMOs and the shinyness is due to an artificial coat of wax which is meant to preserve them longer (the ones they sell at grocery stores are 14 months old on average!). It's like in those ads of food where they use glue, spray, etc to make the food look better except it's actually meant for consumption in this case.
So for the Americans here that have eaten apples like this before: what do they taste like? They must be terrible. Imagine eating 14 month old fruit with wax on it.
R:33 / I:6 Are you watching the Winter Olympics at all? I've tried again to make myself interested in them, but I just can't do it. I like it when things are objective, like "this guy jumped the highest so he wins", but all this dancing in circles that then gets judged makes no sense to me.

R:20 / I:2 The administrators of Australia complain of the abundance of ground dwelling Laurasiatheria in the wilds of the land and the detrimental effect this has on the native ecology of said land but does not the basis of evolution lie on the notion of survival of the fittest? And is not Evolution a natural process? If these native creatures cannot handle the pressures introduced by the introduction of more advanced lifeforms then do they really have a place in this world? Who are we to interfere with natural selection.
Why should we genocide millions of cats, dogs(which are even recognised as native anyway), horses, buffalo, camels, goats, pigs and deer just so that a handful of stupid marsupials survive? And why should we care if they alter the flora of this place? The flora could do with some altering. This goes against the greater good.
Furthermore, they make the argument that the native ecology never co-evolved with predators such as the felid and vulpine and so therefore they are more vulnerable to these creatures and the aforementioned creatures should not be permitted to live in their environments. This simply is not true, there existed here the Thylacine, Tasmanian and Australian devils, quolls, Thylacoleo and a myriad of other such mammals.

Purge
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimum_population >The optimal world population has been estimated by a team co-authored by Paul R. Ehrlich. >Based on this, the estimation of optimum population in the 1994 study was to around 1.5 billion to 2 billion people. >A 2014 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America concluded that, with a fertility-reduction model of one-child per female by 2100, it would take at least 140 years to reduce the population to 2 billion people by 2153.
What do you think the most effective way to artificially kill billions of people (5 billion at max) would be? Keeping in mind that if you were to kill billions of people at once, the world probably would not have enough graves for them. One way to do it could be deploying billions of nanobots and accomplishing this over years or so but that sounds very much in the realm of sci-fi, right now at least. Artificially created virus might also be a good choice, considering the current situation. Additionally, a random massacre of the human race would be a bad idea since ideally you would want the human race to flourish after the purge, to that regard, what metric do you think would best determine the "worth" of a human being?

Doctors in Japan say a man’s accidental ingestion of a toothpick left him dealing with months of pain in his back and leg—all caused by said toothpick getting stuck in his rectum. Once the toothpick was removed, the man’s troubles fortunately went away.
The strange medical tale was detailed this week in BMJ Case Reports. According to the report, the 67-year-old man first reached out for help when he had been experiencing two months of pain along his right buttock and thigh. MRI scans suggested that the source of this pain was stenosis around the lower back, a condition where the spaces within our spine begin to narrow—this narrowing can then pinch the surrounding nerves, leading to painful or numbing sensations. Though stenosis can be managed conservatively with drugs and physical therapy, the doctors opted for surgery to treat it.
When they performed a CT scan on the man just before the operation, though, they found a surprise in his rectum: a 7-centimeter-long rod eventually determined to be a toothpick that the man had accidentally swallowed. Six days after the find, the man’s pain in his right leg quickly got worse, prompting doctors to remove the toothpick from its hiding place as soon as possible. Thankfully, after they did, his pain went away and hasn’t come back since, all but confirming the toothpick as the real cause of his symptoms.
Most of the time, when a foreign body in the rectum stirs up trouble, it’s because someone intentionally put it there, for whatever reason. But it’s not unheard of for hardier materials, like animal bones, introduced into the body the more common way to wind up stuck there. In this case, the doctors theorize that the pointy end of the toothpick had ended up right next to one particular branch of nerves in the spinal cord, causing enough pressure to account for the localized symptoms along the man’s right butt and leg.
The exact series of unfortunate events that led to this man’s case is “extremely rare,” the doctors wrote, but “physicians should be mindful to avoid misdiagnosis.”

R:8 / I:6 How much of the stars can you see from where you live? For me, the cutoff is about magnitude 2.9 (pic related, Uranus excluded). Only a few constellations have enough stars visible to be recognizable.
Do you have any favorite websites for figuring out what the objects you're seeing in the sky are? I used https://www.fourmilab.ch/yoursky/ for the OP pic; it's an old website, but the new ones I find in a quick search don't seem much improved. It's very useful to be able to adjust the brightness cutoff for the stars displayed, or unless you live in the middle of nowhere you can end up with a sky map so dissimilar to your own sky that you can't find anything.
