Welcome to /amv/, a board for more involved discussion of media.
This board is intended to accommodate nuanced and lengthy threads, but is very much NOT intended to work as containment. Silly or spontaneous threads will remain on /jp/ and it's expected that they will continue to lead to conversations of their own. For the best experience, you need to visit all of kissu!
OP must start a conversation and should make a thread with the expectation of supporting the thread for a period of time.

The cute ninja anime has really been providing classic anime wackiness in a way that's been sorely lacking recently apart from Jashin-chan. I think this anime follows more the core spirit of what makes dark humor so great. The morality, or lack thereof, of their actions isn't forcefully shoved in your face and even is made light of as the killing spree continues unrepentant and furthermore rewarded. All the real negatives are left in the meta of the anime where you associate getting to learn the characters better with their unceremonious deaths. That carefree attitude lending itself perfectly to taking jabs at society as mindless killing provides a better life for Satoko and Konoha than any sort of ordinary lifestyle could, completely devaluing human life into a yen sign and enjoying each second of it.

I think Shaft having made this was truly a boon for this anime. Their prior experience with SZS and Maria Holic (No surprise also looking at who from Shaft directed this) primed them to be absolutely perfect for pulling it off. Not sure there's any other studio out there at the moment who could tackle it without shoving in some sort of forced moralfagging or messing up the underlying cynicism. Konoha isn't the kind of character I can see working as anyone but the completely black face of psychopathy, greed, and sloth that she is. And Satoko is perfect as her easily manipulated and lacking the brains for ethics sidekick. The abusive light yuri relationship between them being the perfect icing to complement this murder cake. I hope it succeeds as a nice like Jashin/Mahoako did and we can see a return to more Dokuros/Punies lighting our screens going into the future.

OH WAIT she didn't do it. I guess there's a bit more humanity to her than we thought, or well it could always be seen that Konoha was the more human of the pair. Still, there's something to be said about the evil in seeing that hit and doing nothing because you benefit from the system which gets a poor girl killed for obviously kuso reasons.

This detail is weird. It's not in the manga, which directly jumps from the offer to the fliers, and I think it would be an odd way to detract from what is otherwise a clear implication. Konoha is indeed also the one who killed Aiko's dad in the first episode (after Satoko follows her to school, and decide to try their first joint assassination). It's understandable for her to perhaps express some measure of regret, but to completely pass up on the offer AND have the implication of her accepting be subverted by a brief anime-original shot would be rather strange, in my opinion. It's unclear what's Konoha's actually feeling at this point.

What show, game or manga do you refuse to engage with and why? I refuse to watch the EVA rebuilds because I have no interest in them, I believe The End of Evangelion was the perfect ending and I see no point in watching past that. Similarly, I haven't seen the Madoka Magica sequel nor played the gacha game released last year for the same reason.
I also refuse to watch the new Higurashi show because I hate the Rika redesign and because I don't see the point on it.

I would never believe anything that is well known in the fanbase, after all, things that are supposed well-known in the fanbase is why you couldn't talk about Eva even prior to the final film. People say a lot of things in interviews as well and I don't believe a single one of them. This also parallels the experience of talking about Eva very nicely, "but Anno said in an interview once", I don't care, Anno has said a lot of things. Same principle applies here.

>However, in the film we've only see 5 timelines (4 time loops). So if we go with the "only what is shown in the film counts" idea, then Homura's total loop time is about 6 months.
That is not correct at all. This might be confusing, but just because something isn't shown, doesn't mean it didn't happen. It is clear that a lot of time passed, because Homura changes quite a lot as she keeps trying.

I'd have gone with Rebellion being the 15th attempt by the way, based on another piece of side material, hypocritical as it may be. But it's technically also in the film, so it's fine.
I guess I was off the mark with your intentions, after all.

>karmic destiny and madoka's power growth
>the canon status of spin offs
I wouldn't really consider these to be too important, because neither of these things is significant in the context of Rebellion or Madoka as a whole.

>that's why Rebellion should have been the end of madoka magica, that is Homura's struggle for Madoka is over, the new movie is a cash grab.
Urobuchi's original 2009 script was modified, and by the anime's finale they had deliberately changed what was previously a conclusive ending into an open one to allow for continuation. Rebellion also has a brutally open ending, as they still wished for continuation. Both of these things are clearly stated in these interviews distributed at the time of its release:
https://feral-phoenix.livejournal.com/685568.html
Here's my summary of the events: Homura spends a considerable amount of time fighting in order to have survive, and only manages to find a resolution when she ascends into Madokami and remakes the world, making most people forget her. For Homura this is less than ideal, as shown by how upset she got during their final exchange, but she soldiers on despite her longing for Madoka. Later, QB sets up a trap for Madoka in the new world, successfully baiting her in a weakened form while allowing Homura to become detached from the Law of Cycles and approach witchhood. She chooses to wield this power to oppose him, and exploits the opportunity to take over and splinter Madoka, separating her incarnation from the Law, remaking things once more. Sayaka remembers this and threatens Homura. There's nothing controversial here, and it should be obvious to anyone watching both the final product that it was not made to have a clean conclusion. Nothing like the original ending of Higurashi, which does conclude things well and appropriately.
>"BUT WRAITH ARC SAID" or "BUT IN MAGIRECO"
These can be written off due to not being written by Urobuchi and thus secondary, but with Kaiten he returns as writer of the screenplay. An interesting comment from him:
>Urobuchi: Honestly, I think some will beautify it and some will reject it completely. These days, static characters who don’t change are popular, and if characters ever change even a little bit there’ll be people who’ll call that out-of-character and get angry. In thPost too long. >No product of a franchise in the animanga industry stands alone.
That's like your opinion and stuff.
You are fully comfotable with writing other things off, so why not write everything off, except for the film that was made?

 No.7231

>>7229
You fail to understand.
It's not "every single thing has connected lore and it should all be taken into account", it's the fact that the industry lives off fan engagement, which it fuels by drawing out plotlines as long as possible and pumping out side material to further entertain the community with more things to chew on, which people then use to speculate and build fan scenarios. That's the basic modus operandi, to reject this reality is simply ignorance. But trying to account for every single spinoff out there leads to incoherence, because they often include reinterpretations or flat out retcons, so the most effective thing is to engage with side material written by the same authors and at the same time as the main material. Therefore, a booklet being given out to people going to watch the movie (which is the source of >>7215's pic) and a concurrent interview are considerably more valid and useful for understanding a work, and this is done deliberately, by design.

 No.7232

>>7231
Well, I disagree. The booklet is not in the film. The interview is not in the film. The things that are in the film are in the film.
I say this in, perhaps, a slightly exaggerated way, but my point is that you don't need supplementary material to fully understand what is happening. To borrow from Urobuchi's interview, you fully understand everything if you just watch Star Wars Episode 1, Episode 2 and Episode 3. There is no need for the animated TV show to explain what is happening in the Star War or the sequels which show what happens after that Star War. Three films and the things that are in the film are more than enough.

You don't need a single bit of supplementary material, all you need are functioning eyes. Just look at the screen and everything is clear.

 No.7222

Visual novels used to be my favorite medium of storytelling. They combined visual and sound effects with a level of interactivity that movies and books are missing(and thus they bore me). Unfortunately, the golden age of vns is over. Almost all the famous titles were made in 2000's and are still popular. I've read almost all of them. I have nothing left to do, but to engage with fanbases over stuff like umineko, muv luv or whatever until I die because it's unlikely we will ever get vns that good or that popular again.

That being said, VN style storytelling lives on in jrpgs and gacha games so perhaps saying that VNs are dead is overstatement, they evolved into video game direction rather then novel direction.

Let's become hunter-gathers together!

I discovered this game recently, and it's pretty enjoyable. Despite the Minecraft-like appearance the game is so much more in-depth and realistic when it comes to its gameplay. Crafting, for example, can require multiple items within a crafting space, and creating things like tools requires you to actually knap stones into shape, creating pottery requires shaping clay, mining requires finding surface copper, etc. The built-in survival guide for looking up crafting recipes is basically a necessity.

Server: 207.211.172.205

You can buy the game from https://www.vintagestory.at/ for 20 EUR.

The refund policy is really generous if you don't like it:
"We offer refunds within 2 weeks of purchase or 10 hours of play time, whichever comes first. However, even if you fall outside those limits you can still request a refund and we'll take a look. In principle, if you don't like our game, then we also don't want to keep your money."

So recently I've been looking around my little story idea notes for whenever I want to make a game on my own and kinda organizing ones that can fit the same general theme into a single idea and I kinda really like it, though probably won't start development on it until I'm through with getting to a comfortable level in Japanese.

What I want to start off with is some sort of unassuming game more of the platformer variety centered around a young girl with a city on the brink of chaos. The platformer thing taking place inside of a dream realm of sorts where something will take place, not quite sure what, but it will have an effect on the outer world. And you go about fixing the problems of the city and its residents via this system and some puzzle solving of sorts. Along the way unlocking movement upgrades and other such things as you progress and possibly tied to an outfit system which can be toggled in the MC's closet. Then at the end it's a somewhat happy ending but after a day of postgame you'll find that it all gets destroyed along with yourself by a demonic creature. I want this primary game to be short and not too difficult so that it's easy for people to complete and potentially rush through and also so that it gets them thinking about why that bad end in the postgame occurs.

The trick to all this I want to be in a little crawlspace door in the MC's closet that you'll get a glimpse of in some way while interacting with the clothes in the closet. If you remove enough of them to uncover that door it'll reveal the entirety of the crawlspace which if you are in the early game will lead you to a dark and creepy room if you click on it where you can find an extra item that may or may not help out a bit elsewhere but also you'll be able to progress through it early on if you can navigate your way through the dark. If not you'll probably be pressed to come out because of the darkness or die in the process of going in too far, this being a shock to the player because it will be the first sign of hostility that the game has shown so far. Which I hope for the more astute player would be a good curiosity hook to come back to it later. And I'll have a light upgrade in the dream realm that'll transfer to actually working inside of that crawlspace which should set off some bells in the players head that there's something off about the area.

Going through this area should be a bit cruel and labyrinthine that eventually leads to the first Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

>not quite sure what, but it will have an effect on the outer world.
How about a rogue Persona/Psychonauts dreamworld incursion, and getting people to change that way? Jumping from one to another. And then the nightmare realm is introspection (although for that to be 90% of the game it'd require the MC to be seriously fucked in the head).

I don't really follow seiyuu for the most part, but whenever a voice stands out to me in recent anime, it's often Tomoyo Kurosawa, Chiwa Saito or Yume Miyamoto. Maybe I have a thing for lower registers and more naturalistic acting.
I also recently learned that Osanai's seiyuu also voices/sings Tomori in MyGO/Ave Mujica and it's kind of blowing my mind because their characters are almost polar opposites despite the surface level ASMR gimmick they share in common.

And the more I listen to Megumi Hayashibara as Nyaoha/Nyarote/Masquernya in Pokemon 2023, the more I realize how much of a prestige job it is to be cast as a mascot character in that show. Imagine your job description is "Cover the full range of human emotions by meowing for 100+ episodes. A multi-billion toy line depends on this. No pressure."

This Kijin Gentoushou show is pretty good. The premise is a basic format, but the characters make it good. There's a mystery behind the source of each demon for each episode which adds a bit of mystery. It should be a boring show about a guy killing a demon-of-the-week with his Megaman powers, but it's actually not. The combat parts aren't very amazing, but that's not the focus. There are too many good shows this season.

 No.5858

It's definitely better than I was expecting. I thought it would crash and burn after the crazy first episode, but it's staying pretty grounded and telling good stories. I'm glad they give each case at least a couple episodes so we can dig in to the emotions of the situation before the action resolves things.

It really says something that it can pull a "humans are the real demons" and not have me immediately drop the show.

This really is a fantastic show.
Ostensibly it's a show about a demon hunter, but he's more of a detective and you hear get a lot of story in each episode. I'm such a sucker for this kind of thing. Episode six was a climax to a plot that had been going on for a few episodes and it was done in such a beautiful way. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it just felt right and rewarding to see it play out.
Even episode 7 where there was no demon at all was satisfying to hear the man talk about his younger days and a friend that was in love.
I'm not sure what it is that determines whether or not I can tolerate or enjoy a situation where people simply talk, as there are many shows where my mind drifts away but a few shows where I stay at full attention. This show is definitely the latter.

 No.7189

File:[SubsPlease] Kijin Gentous….jpg (87.9 KB,1920x1080)

Man, what a great show. I really need to think of a better way to describe this kind of show that I like, it's the format akin to Kino's Journey where there's a central character but other characters steal the focus for an episode or two when it's their time for their story to be told. The surprise of the episode 8-9 wouldn't have been a surprise if I paid more attention or had more Japanese mythological "common sense".
I do know of the Japanese concept that well-used objects gain a soul but it just wasn't in the foreground of my thought processes of what could be going on. I have a feeling I'm missing the subplot with the prostitute, or rather that it's making reference to previous things in the story that I've forgotten.
Seems like there's a major story change with episode 10...

I don't think that Madoka is the catalyst for darkness in media... Curses in stories like Raspberry's have been around for thousands of years. But I did sort of expect this at some point, her tear collection wasn't really getting anywhere and there needed to be a sense of urgency pressed onto her.

The tears went the way of an isekai title gimmick a few episodes in, then it was just befriending witches for a while and now its her getting fucked up by dark magic. The series regularly decides it wants to be something completely different.

Girl issues are so stupid. It's not about fixing problems, it's just about making people feel better for vague reasons. I'm so glad the Witches are still addressing this.

The problem is if it's actually a problem in the first place.
