Do you remember what was the first VN/eroge you've played? I was trying to find out the names of some of these pixelated PC-98 ones I've played before and one of them was apparently True Love. It seems to have gotten an official TL in 1998 according to vndb. I played it sometime around 2003-2004 I believe. Quite a few ones seem to have gotten official translations back then surprisingly: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JAST_USA There are probably more that I've had the chance of playing before in there as well. Need to check it thoroughly. Yume Miru Kusuri is in there too and it was also important to me in that it was the first 'real' VN I've played/read in its entirety. I remember finding out about it on /v/ around late 2007.

You know when I think of the things I really love in games above anything else it's world design. It's why Hollow Knight is my favorite metroidvania and why that genre to me is one of my favorites. The Souls series has some pretty great world design of its own as well, with DeS, DS, BB, and ER being some of the best out there in the 3D space for world exploration. But then there's DS2 and DS3, the two least impressive of the series. I know it's conventional wisdom to normally take a big dump all over DS2 and passing marks are giving to DS3, but whenever I think back on the two of them, I can recall the layout of and how to manuever around the world of DS2 better than I can DS3. At least, in terms of variability. For some reason I always feel like DS3 is more a straight shot that is kinda boring because of it.

Am I just misremembering or is DS3 the weakest link in the Souls series that people give a pass for just being more like DS1 than DS2?

Meant more than that. >>3524 was pretty much hit the nail on the head with the assumption of what I meant. Of course, atmosphere and ambiance play a critical role (also where music comes into play big time) but they can't really affect the core gameplay itself. The interconnectedness of the world however is probably one of the most important factors in truly unlocking an infinite replayability key that allows for infinite enjoyment of any of these games, at least for me. It gives an extremely rewarding feeling for exploration that I can feel excited in mapping out for each new playthrough I start up. Especially when you can exploit things like the master key in Dark Souls or bomb/wall jumping in Super Metroid to accomplish entirely different routes for playing.

When it comes to conversation it makes any playthrough fun to talk about because you can always discuss what route you took and what way it differs from others. Then in turn it also makes theorizing different ways to get to different areas/upgrades/bosses early fun as well. Think the last new game I played to have this feeling was Elden Ring when I was on my magic playthrough and skipping over to Raya Lucaria from the start to unlock the classes potential, and then taking the trap chest over in Limgrave to the Caelid mines so I can be next to where the one really good staff is and get that early. Or in any of the dozens of Hollow Knight playthroughs I did trying to get 100% steel soul/speedrun achievement trying to figure out what path was best for maximizing my chances of success.

Surely, /qa/ recognizes this butt or on the other hand bulge, right? Nier and Automata were the only Yoko Taro games I'd actually played before deciding to go and finish each of them in their entirety. And while similar to Drakengard in story quality, the gameplay for these RPGs actually sucks you in.

So what experience or opinions does /qa/ have with the series, or Taro in general? Automata's got an anime out right now that I've been putting on hold until I beat everything, but maybe people have seen and enjoyed it as well.

I was not expecting this from Tasokare Hotel at all. Thought it was going to be a fun mystery show, all the guests solve their mysteries and go back to their respective worlds; but the latest episode turned pretty dark...
A serial killer manipulating one JK to kill her BFF by telling her her death wasn't an accident but her BFF's ploy to kill her. Only for the BFF to commit seppuku from the guilt of having accidentally killed the JK. Which then leads the JK to go to HELL for killing someone in the hotel... very much unexpected turn of events.
Might be the best anime this season.

The ending was nice. A stack of conveniences, but nice.
The work at Tasokare Hotel buys you time to revert back IRL?
They conveniently had just enough time to go back to save Atri?
"Oh you don't have your memory of the Tasokare Hotel if you go out the door, but if you use this elevator you can keep your memory intact!"
Monkey demon had a box that opens the gates to hell, which he didn't use to take a glimpse at it for some reason, and opted to having someone get killed for the gates of hell to open

But, in the end, Neko even gets to go on a date with Ruri IRL!

Finished it. Yep, it's the show of the season. Medalist is cute, but a show with a great story and characters really puts Tasokare at the top.
The end was a bit too convenient to see time travel pop up, but I guess it was mentioned early on. It was just my assumption that the "time" mentioned was something added to their lifespan. But, it was still a very satisfying ending. Episode titles really should be less direct. Episode 11 named something like "Pistol and Hell" and 12 was "Revenge". That's not something people should see in the opening of the episode.
It really makes me wonder what the phone game was like, but it's not translated, so meh. It's not going to be as good if you already know how everything ends.
I hope we see more from Neko's VA as her anime career is fairly old but bare.

The new rurouni kenshin looks flippin GOOD (Although not on the level of Tsuioku good but that's impractical). Which is nice for me because depending on how much they adapt this is probably up in my top 3 greatest battle shounens of all time. Would be amazing if this goes beyond just re-adapting what the anime already covered and properly doing justice to the later manga arcs because that's the greatest fault of the original IMO. Although the new OP is definitely no sobakasu..... It's hard to top a 10/10 opening I wish the new one was at least comparable...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JQ8O5g2RXI

Anyways, with this I kinda wonder what /qa/ thinks about the uptick in higher budget remakes of older anime? I find it a bit worrying because of the precedent Hollywood set with it, but everything so far has been pretty quality (This, Urusei Yatsura, Mahoujin Guru Guru come to mind). Also as a positive it seems that these new remakes, if source material has updated since the original, are doing more the Brotherhood style of remake in which they adapt the source material more accurately and to its conclusion instead of just being an advertisement. In a way I think I'd actually prefer more of these since I hate the way so many older anime are just sitting in the "next season never" bin and if a full remake is what's needed to see them adapted to finish then so be it. I will happily eat up the Spice and Wolf remake if that's what'll be done as well.

It used to come up a lot more when an anime came out, whether anime should try to be more faithful to the source material when adapting even if they weren't going to cover the rest of the story of a manga. I think back then I was more partial towards the faithful camp, because I had more hope for sequels to good series back then that'd continue the series towards its more intended end.

Now though, that wish has been more or less fulfilled with most adaptations sticking close to the source material whether they end on a more conclusive note or not. But at times it feels like that was a monkey paw of sorts. Since now series simply last forever, and there's an infinite amount of different LN/Manga adaptations flowing out the gates each season with zero hope of getting a sequel. They'll always end feeling half-finished (because they are) and plenty of buildup there could be that's packed into the adaptation that has no relevance til later arcs is also left untouched. This leading to the entire anime somewhat suffering for it because it feels more like you wasted your time watching a "Read more by buying the source!" ad than anything. And honestly, when it comes to what studios are adapting nowadays, I feel like scriptwriters in these anime studios could do a far better job with the source material given to them than the majority of LN authors could do with their work.

What were they thinking? It's like they couldn't figure out how to make a full-length game so they just split into five different teams and stuck all the resulting minigames together to pad things out. It's super frustrating because the core gameplay is still fun and they clearly proved they could have made a much better game, but they just didn't and covered all the good stuff in as much tedium and distraction as possible.

I think it's because it's something you can add to make it seem like there's more to any game and it gives a sense of progression, but it seems like it takes away more than it adds. Half the upgrades in this game are completely pointless, like a bunch of HP increases and making the stupid dog marginally better at things he's never going to be doing, a few are critical to the core gameplay and make the first bit of the game feel really awkward until you can get them, and then the rest are OP shit that negates the strategy and technique you spent the earlier bits learning. Maybe they want to have that dopamine hit from a big "side quest complete" and need a spendable resource to enable that, but when the gameplay itself is fun you don't need to encourage players to interact with it.
