I've legitimately never heard anyone say anything about about this manga.

Is there anything else as beloved as Soremachi?

Hakumei to Mikochi is another manga I have never heard anyone say anything about. Inoffensive slice of life stuff tend to not get much backlash unless it's popular enough to attract the attention of trolls and loud contrarians.

You're watching the four gorgeous shows currently airing, right? It's amazing to see these every week. Dungeon Meshi and Urusei Yatsura extend into Spring, but I'm definitely going to miss Undead and Frieren. I feel like the "anime is terrible since ####" people really need to actually pay attention.

That's really incredible. I have to admit that I felt disappointed to see the 3D horses (I think I already said that) but if it was a sacrifice they made since horses are apparently a major pain to animate then I guess it's tolerable when you take the anime as a whole.
They seem to have themes for each villain, like the eye guy's bizarre close-ups remind me of Ren and Stimpy and this most recent episode reminded me of classic Disney.

Turns out they actually used physical paper for that flat segment in the last episode. It's a surprising amount of effort and thought put into those thirty seconds of animation, especially for something that is anime-original. In the manga it's one shot of him running with narration around it. Alongside that we had Takauji's massacre, all the ear weirdness, and Genba's fight with the radar duo. In fact, a ton of the visuals are wholly original and comparing this episode to volume 2 is like night and day.
All his jumping around is adapted from a single panel, and the purple ring of fire is hardly even implied when you look at how small the fire is. Same for the mass beheading that's only a bunch of heads casually flying upwards. But also things like Genba sitting on his web of ropes or acrobatically transitioning from the party to the assassination of Takauji. Even just the radar background behind the ear/eye pair. Fucking insane adaptation.
>>762
>despite its rather mundane subject matter of teenagers being pop stars or theater actors
I wouldn't truly call it mundane, as certainly the things that take place are rarer than something like Yuru Camp, Slow Loop, or any other themed CGDCT you can think of. Past that, it's not like a grounded story directly equates to regular visuals, as Tatami Galaxy is really out there for an anime about a guy living through his college years (granted, that's Yuasa). There was a lot of heightened emotion here to match the guy's state and it was entirely fitting, that's what it makes it powerful.

>>767
'Twas raw, I forgot to make half of the reply and there was a sentence I hadn't even finished writing.
>horses are apparently a major pain to animate
Man, I wonder how Steel Ball Run is going to turn out. Half of the manga takes place on horseback or besides a horse and frequently with at least half a dozen of them, they are central to the story.

Posting in this thread again to say how much I love Sengoku Youko.
It's just so pretty and a treat to look at. It's hard to describe since I think the other shows might have better "direction", but Sengoku just looks more appealing to me somehow.
There's such a great variety of themes with all sorts of brilliant colors! Clips don't do it justice because while other shows go to 11 for 20 seconds (sakuga or whatever) and then hang around at 6, this one has a far more leveled approach.
I'm also reminded that it's the same studio that did Utawarerumono 2 and 3, and unlike those this one got a proper budget. (sigh)

I think Atri deserves mention as being another good-looking show, but this time centered on the character and facial animations! From a VN source where each character had a few portraits to this is quite the leap I'd say. Best faces of the season, although you need to go frame-by-frame to appreciate some of them.
I don't know what it did to get such a fantastic adaptation, but it's very nice.

I think if you take out the hard lock and instant turning, this game becomes near perfect. The gunplay just feels so good and I love the way impact melee has.

 No.644

>>643
I wouldn't call it near perfect. Actually I don't like the stun centered gameplay either because it turns the game into just shoot>stun>combo. This ruins melee for me because it feels sub-optimal to use for anything other than hitting a sunned enemy. Melee in previous AC games had you thinking in 5d trying to figure out how you were going to land a pilebunker. It always felt extremely satisfying. I don't get that here. I honestly think this is one of the worst AC games, but it's still a pretty good game funny enough.

The worst part though is that it's so casualized that's it's hard to believe they will just revert back to the OG AC formula since nu-AC fans will see it as "clunky."

For me. Keeping in mind pack of cigarettes = 20 here. Price for my preferred brand 20 years ago: $2.25. Price when I stopped smoking them a couple of years ago: $8.50-$13 depending on where I bought them (cheaper in my home state). I smoked 1 and 1/2-2 packs daily (so 30-40 a day). So I was spending $20 everyday and also buying a snack/drink or something along with them.

Compare to vaping: Initial cost for vape $120+ for first vape (large one) and $50 or so for salt nic vape (pen type). Cost for replacement cartridge every week: $5-$10. Cost of juice every week: $25-40. Cost of replacement batteries yearly to bi-yearly: $25-$50 (can't buy replacements for pen type).

Compare to rolling my own cigarettes: Cost for machine to stuff tubes: $50. Cost for 8 ounces tobacco: $8 (makes 200-250 cigarettes). Cost of 200 pre-rolled filtered tubes: $3.

Making your own is much cheaper. Also vaping is rougher on the lungs despite the advertising and promises. I can chain smoke cigarettes all day while working outside in the heat and/or walking/hiking. With a vape I can't do that. It's too hard to catch my breath.

Main reason I don't vape anymore: I just ended up doing both. I'd vape between cigarettes. Now the only time I use a vape is if I'm going to be somewhere that doesn't allow smoking. But over the last year or so these places have banned vaping to. So it doesn't make much sense anymore. If I stay at someone else's house I'll sometimes take one. Since they're more prone to allow vaping than smoking. Also with vape it's possible to take "ghost hits" that don't let out any vapor. But they're hell on your lungs.

>>468
I typically smoke 2-3 cigarettes an hour. Sometimes more now that I roll because they're so cheap. My mother is a true chain smoker. I've seen her fire up another while the last one is still smoldering in the ash tray.

>>469
The average is skewed by people that report only having 1-2 daily or people reporting less than they truly smoke. The average smoker in my experience has at least 15-20 a day. Most people smoke an entire pack or just under one so they have one in the morning left over upon waking. If they consume alcohol double thesPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

This OVA drove me insane. Felt incredibly cowardly the way it constantly retreats into self deprecating humor and overdramatized smears of people who do the things they so enjoy depicting. MCs only dream is to get rich enough to make Otaku disneyland? And all the while they plaster real headlines from news of the world as if its supposed to remind you reality exists? Fuck outta here. This kind of paralyzing indecisiveness, neither committing to embracing their work nor committing to 'growing up' is infuriating to watch.

Still laughed at the interviews though.

I mean, KyoAni was the main producer of it with its moege VN adaptations, Lucky Star, K-ON, Tamako Market, Nichijou, etc. Dragon Maid is the closest thing to those and they haven't done anything of that kind since the fire.

The other studio that was really big on it is Doga Kobo. They're a bit lacking on it as well now. Houkago Tenbou, Koisuru Asteroid, Gabriel DropOut and New Game were their most recent attempts at it.

That change happened before the fire. All those examples you named are manga or VN adaptations or anime originals, whereas a little over a decade ago they switched to primarily adapting (light) novels instead, which being a less visual medium has less room for moe appeal. Stuff like Tsurune, Violet Evergarden, Kyoukai no Kanata, and Phantom World all came out of their in-house LN publishing division, while others like Eupho come from outside.
With the early ones, like Chu2, they went out of their way to up the moe appeal for the anime (Kumiko, for instance, being anime original), but as times changed they moved away from doing even that much.
Kobayashi-san, which you point out as one of their few moe-focused series of recent times, is notably the one and only manga adaptation that Kyoani has done since they started publishing LNs back in mid-2011.

You can argue that Free! which caused a massive mental breakdown on /a/ back then was a big game changer as well; because it shifted their audience from primarily male to a more balanced gender breakdown if we use the gender demographics of Yuru Camp and Bocchi as example.
>Stuff like Tsurune, Violet Evergarden, Kyoukai no Kanata, and Phantom World all came out of their in-house LN publishing division, while others like Eupho come from outside
Notice that all of these have female appeal to some extent, except maybe Phantom World.

The fire certainly didn't help and it slowed down their overall production of shows though, so it means even less stuff like Dragon Maid being produced.

Edomae Elf was fun and I want a second season so badly.

>>420
The true decline of these kinds of shows stems from the studios attempting to go for mass appeal now. Which includes pandering to both the non-Otaku in-country and the west. The allure of money from new segments of the market has caused a lot of studios to focus on no longer pandering to otaku. It doesn't matter how much the otaku complain they can never outspend the hordes of more casual fans who don't care about obscure references or moe for the sake of moe. Never forget there was a time when people declared moe-shit the death of anime in the early-late 2000s. So it isn't surprising to see that style start to fall out of favor. Never mind the fact that we have all this pandering and censorship these days in an attempt to either prevent or cause a social media shitstorm as a way to do promotion.

In other words; You aren't the target market anymore. Even with remakes we usually see them taking an old popular show and toning down a lot of what made it good in an attempt to sanitize it for the new type of audience.

Studios don't want to churn out a steady supply of shows for otaku who will spend a slim-decent profit in return. They want to churn out as much as possible in the hopes that one show will obtain the popularity of something like Madoka. Where they can ride the profits for many years and slowly produce content that has mass appeal in many different regions. Why make $1,000 at home off something when you can make $1,000,000 aboard? Who cares what the local otaku think when they'll never be able to spend that type of money even on something they love?

This isn't unique to Japan or anime either. Mediums go through cycles like this. They will keep pushing out low budget stuff until the market refuses to watch it anymore. These come-lately fans will move on to the next fad. Then after a few years of nothing being produced someone will take a chance again. They'll make something for otaku. The otaku will like it and spend a lot of money on it. Then the process will repeat. We'll get a bunch of good content for about a decade or so until the usual parties see the money being made and attempt to cash-in on the fad again. Then we're back to what we have now: A bunch of low budget quPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Alright, so I'm going to make an attempt at a Let's Play thread of what will surely be a fantastic game. I played the original Dungeon Travelers 2 on Vita and it was the last physical game I ever bought (remember when we could buy and own media?) It's truly an amazing game for many reasons. Fantastic characters, great classes, great boss battles and spectacularly frustrating dungeons. Its sequel, Dungeon Travelers 2-2, came out years later, but unfortunately it never received a translation.
Now, a decade later it did received a surprise translation and release on PC. It was going to be on Steam, but those prudes backed out. I'm sure it's related to the lewdness, as Steam only has room for stuff like Sex with Furry Hitler 2 or War Crime Simulator 2023. Instead it got a release on one of those gacha/freemium sites where it feels like you get malware just by loading the page, so I will instead be using the version found on nyaa.
If Aquaplus actually wanted money I'd be willing to buy figures and stuff from them, but nope, they don't. If I traveled to Japan I could get some crappy keychains if I timed it right and found one of their "pop up" stores, but that's about it. Okay, back to the game:

This game is a "what if" scenario at the end of Dungeon Travelers 2 if the final battle was lost. There's a Demon Queen that wants to corrupt and conquer humanity and blahblah that part isn't very exciting. Since the characters are the of the highlights (Aquaplus is involved after all) I'll give a brief introduction of each character before I start the game.

Tamaki's route was way too short.
Initially I thought it might be the "time flies when you're having fun" effect since I'm prone to ignoring the outside world when I get into these, but no, it was definitely not something that I should have been able to get through in such little time.
I don't understand... she's a major character and she features prominently in official art. This was waaaaay too short. Some of her scenes were even shared as you can see on the "map" here with Konomi: >>395. Then on other days I actually had to choose the 'go home' option because there simply wasn't any event with her. Huh?

But, I guess enough complaining about the length. It was a really nice and heartwarming story as expected. Unlike Sasara's route the confession was not until the very end, with no regular scenes as boyfriend and girlfriend apart from the short epilogue scene hinting at the future. This is something I strongly dislike, but I guess it's not too unusual. The climax of the story that contained the confession and love scene was quite long and emotional! If you count the pre-sex parts the scene had 7 CGs not counting variations, so that was quite impressive. But... I wanted more time with her....

Instead I'm simply taken to the title screen and encouraged to start the process over again with a different girl. It's wrong! It's cruel!
I don't know if writers think that there needs to be the "conflict" and pursuit in order for the story to be engaging, but it's definitely not true. Well, it's been 20 years so hopefully they know better by now.

Finished Karin's route. These routes feel short.
Maybe Sasara's route was the one that was longer than the others, or maybe it just felt that way because it was far more dynamic and dramatic.
Karin is a paranormal/UFO/etc-obsessed girl with a teasing/playful personality, but the route didn't really highlight the paranormal stuff much. Why is it that it was on Sasara's route that there was paranormal club event (with Yuuji and the others) where we searched for an alien(?) at the school (and I found her) but the similar event for Karin was just me bumping into a random girl for 20 seconds? The hypnosis event even worked on Sasara while in Karin's route I had to play along. Strange...
It panned into regular romantic-type stuff quite fast with the paranormal club in the background, which was enjoyable, but I was expecting a bit more zaniness since she started out zany and was also very zany in Sasara's route. It was cute and enjoyable, but I just didn't feel any connection to her. The thing with these stories is if I don't feel any connection to the girl then everything becomes less remarkable.
Maybe it was a mistake to do Tamaki's route so early, and also Sasara's since it was very emotional by comparison.

Current objective* route rankings:

1. Sasara
2. Tamaki
3. Karin

Tamaki is my clear favorite so far, but I have to admit that Sasara's route was far more fleshed out with conflict and resolution and a whole host of emotions and character stories. But, the climax of Tamaki's story was truly wonderful and she's the one I feel most connection to. I'm also extremely bothered with the knowledge in Tamaki's route that she came back for me after we pledged our love as kids (although "I" didn't realize it) and the whole reason I'm bad with girls is because I subconsciously love Tamaki. Every other route is me rejecting this beautiful story of a love which lasted for years even across a distance. I... this REALLY bothers me and I think it tainted Karin's route for me. Tamaki is suffering...
I think I'll save Komaki's route for last since she is the other character that features prominently, and Konomi will be second to last. But... Tamaki...

Yeah, but most chapters have between 50 and 90 pages, so it's still fairly long. According to Kodansha's site, the official total is 912 pages:
https://kc.kodansha.co.jp/title?code=1000002347
You can see it if you select a volume and check out the ページ数 part, they're each of average length. Really though, my point is that with these three alone you already end up with 19 volumes, that's pretty sizeable already. But add Abashiri Family's further 15 volumes (where a molester is accidentally swallowed up by a giantess so to rescue him they make her shit him out? wtf), 9 more from Guerrilla High, Maboroshi Panty and Kekkou Kamen, then 7 from Oira Sukeban, 9 from Susano Oh, and then you end up with a total of fifty nine volumes, which is "shonen running weekly for ten years" territory, longer than Dragon Ball but not quite as long as Naruto or Bleach.

It's interesting, I get the impression that originally he liked to work more with (relatively) shorter stories, since the first runs of those mentioned in >>161 are actually in line with the ones listed above, in the 4-7 range for Devilman, Mazinger, Getter, and Jack. It's in its second part that Jack goes way higher, for example.

What does /qa/ think about the idea of hardcore MMOs? Having seen a bit about this in my Youtube recommends, it looks kinda fun and engaing. Classic wow is by no means the hardest, or even that challenging an MMO, but I think that just lends itself very nicely to a hardcore mode. It encourages a bit more social interaction during questing to not die trying to solo along with encouraging better communication during dungeons/raids since nobody wants to lose their character. Also I'm a bit of a fan of hardcore modes myself, so I was wondering if kissu might be interested in giving it a shot once the servers come out?

Phase 3 of WoW SoD launched with Nightmare Incursions, a new mechanic that just so happened to turn into the most profitable gold and xp source in the game. Blizz noticed and changes are already planned like a gold reward hotfix that came 8 hours after the patch launched, and an exp nerf to the incursion quests that'll come later today. Figuring this out, I decided to use it as an opportunity to easily level 2 of my chars to 50, and I spent all day today just running incursions over and over. Now my warrior is 50 alongside my rogue.

Sort of like an instance thing that everyone takes part in, they're inside of the portals that the world boss dragons come out of. Inside you do quests and get mission letters from them that you then use to get another quest and an item that lets you share the quest with other party members. There's kill quests, pick up quests, boss quests, and profession-based quests. It's pretty fun to do as a one off event and feels very MMO-y with how many people are doing it at the same time and killing bosses and such. However, the issue is that it's much easier to just do bosses and pick up quests than it is to do any kill quests or profession ones, so people run them in loops of 5-man groups and refresh all the quests after turning them in by sharing with each other then do it again and again and again because it's the most efficient way to get both gold and xp. You do this from 40 to 50 unless you want to be left behind, and right now there's a rush to do them since it's getting nerfed hard in the next patch so it's super easy to get groups.

No group for Blood Moon? No problem! Just play a rogue.

Heavy metal may/may not improve performance

Do you have a game or show or anything else that you experienced when you were younger that has left a permanent impression on you? Not just nostalgia, but you feel as though it altered your way of thinking or what it is you desire.
I'm aging myself a bit with this one, but two prominent ones for me are the two Lunar games. They're JRPGs that I first played on the PSX. They originally came out on SegaCD, but it was wisely remastered for a console that more than 5 people had. I did go back and play the SegeaCD versions on emulator back in the day, though. I even had some Lunar avatars that I still have on my drive!

The main themes of the games are adventure and love. At its core the games are very simple both in gameplay and story scope, but its charm is the unmistakable purity of it. I think these two games gave me desire for the fairytale romance that you can only see in fiction, and of course the corny "defeating the bad guy with friendship and love" cliché. It's just so beautiful and pure. If someone were to ask me what paradise is like, I would point to this kind of thing. It is the pure idealization of human emotion.

Someone might have also noticed that the art looks familiar, and that's because the character designer eventually worked on Idolm@ster. Takane in particular really has the face, so she's a bit of a weakness of mine when it comes to 2D idols, even when I don't really partake in that culture.

Of course, the games do have issues. Today I can appreciate the fact that Working Designs went overboard with the localization process and should have been respectful to the source material. The main story is fine, but the random NPCs make jokes and references to pop culture that they really shouldn't.

The first Samurai Warriors game for the PS2 is what first got me into samurai and ninjas and eventually anime. I think what got me so hooked on this game was how exotic it was. I used to live out in the boonies and the only experience I had with Japanese media was through Pokemon and Moomins.

The novel Blindsight by Peter Watts. The bleak outlook on life stuck with me. I don't mean the central idea of the novel the notion that consciousness is an evolutionary dead end because non-conscious beings are massively more efficient at thinking, it's more the way that every character in his novels is some variety of cynical asshole or another. You would not be surprised to learn after reading his books that he's the kind of guy who says "Life is an eternal struggle at the expense of other life". But it's a cynicism that comes from caring too much for his own good---one of the formative experiences of Peter Watts' life was when he was a boy, seeing some schoolboys torment a snake, and he tried to stop them because he felt bad for the snake, and the other boys ganged up on him for it. Anyway, the worldview articulated in his fiction dropped into me like a paving stone matching a gap in a paved path.
