I'm sure someone is going to immediately post a counterexample for some anime out there that struggles with its art/animation yet still tell a captivating story. It's just, despite the massive amount of anime I've seen I don't think there's ever really been a case where something without any sort of visual flair has ever wormed its way into my long-term memory or had any impact. And not visual flair necessarily in the sense of looking closer to Ghibli levels of blow your mind crazy animation, but any sort of work where you can feel a sort of personal touch from the creators, whether it be the animators or the director. It feels like it's almost a set in stone rule that average animation begets average quality at best. While good animation can elevate a poorer story. Like with Zenshuu this season, I don't really care for the story all that much but I'll still watch it because it looks nice and there's plenty of older OVAs too for which the stories are a complete mess but enthrall you enough with their presentation that you keep watching anyways.

With that said I really wanted to like Kuroiwa because it's got the kind of ecchi setups I always long for and a bit above generic cardboard cutout MCs. However, it just looks so bland everywhere. For all that it tries in its first episode meant to hook you, it can't muster enough to excite me more in its entire runtime than a single segment from a Highschool DxD ED. I just end up feeling more sad and disappointed in the end that I wasn't able to like it more and the wasted potential that could have been were it handled by a better studio. I think this is probably one of my main gripes with anime nowadays, there's too much hastily churned out series that contribute to some abstract looming ball of monotony that casts a shadow above anime as a whole to damper its image into one of mediocrity even when there's many cases of a few standout shows each season. I wish they'd just go away even if that meant less anime as a whole to watch. Maybe the animators could be concentrated into fewer projects to make better overall works.

I don't think I made any sweeping generalizations, though. I brought up subjectivity just because you simply seemed to be unable to think that a shows quality might increase with hot men. People judge shows with different criteria; mecha otaku will obsess over the quality of the mechs, while a fujoshi will obsess over the male character's pairings.

Your original comment was about "overvaluing" something; I just pointed out that what we value is rather arbitrary.

And I kind of disagree with your conclusion: visual style can be substance (for example, redline, angels egg). Could Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt for example stand on its witty writing alone? Its visuals are an inseparable part of its substance

The entire thread is based around the assertion that "style" is more important than "substance" in anime, and OP has clarified that "style" refers to the visuals. The entire thread and discussion becomes pointless if you're just going to go "well, it's all subjective anyway." You're either conceding the argument in the sorest of ways or jumping in the middle of a discussion you have no intention of engaging with just to deny its foundational assumptions.

For anyone looking to jump on the Fate/ train for the new anime, here's a quick guide of what you probably want to go through. I'm also going to assume you're committed to this enough to dive head-in to the VN. If you're looking to test the waters first, you can try out the ufotable anime and then come back, there will be some spoilers you get from doing this but you probably already know most of them from hanging around otaku circles. Also, my knowledge isn't perfect so I may be missing some things.

Step 1: Read the VN
Download the Mirror Moon TL of the enhanced Realta Nua version with the ero scenes from the original game patched back in. The TL isn't perfect, or even really that good, but it's what everyone you talk to will be quoting and the official TLs for Fate have proven far worse in the past. Play through all three routes in order, try to get all the bad ends, but make sure you get Mind of Steel and Sparks Liner High as those "bad ends" are on par with actual alternate endings.
Adaptations: The stay night route technically has anime and manga adaptations, but both do the old VN adaptation thing of mashing routes together and are generally low quality in terms of art and animation.
The UBW route has an awful movie adaptation and a quite good TV anime. It does favor style over accuracy to the lore, which upsets some autists, but it's overall a solid adaptation and the only good way to see these characters in motion. There's also a manga, but it's pretty new.
The HF route has a movie trilogy which looks pretty, but rushes the plot way too much, ignores the VN writing to an excessive degree, and rewrites thinks to make Sakura look better. Only watch if you're a sakugafag or a Sakurafag. There's also a manga for this, which is really good at covering the whole story with great visualizations (especially for the lewd scenes), but it's got a lot more to cover before it's complete.
All of this is to say, you really have no choice but to read the VN because the only good substitute only covers the middle third and the game makes you do routes in order so you have to play that part anyway.

Step 2: Round out the core trilogy
Hollow Ataraxia, a fandisc VN, is the next step and the official not-quite-sequel. It introduces a lot of new stuff to the world. Anime never ever.

Fate/stay in the kitchen is the closest thing we have to the HA day sections.
Prisma Illya is the closest thing we have to the HA night sections.

The only reason I added Tsukihime to the list is because Assassin's master is a dead apostle and those don't really come up anywhere else in Fate. I wouldn't be surprised if stuff from other Nasuverse works showed up at some point later, but this is already a lot to work through.

Are there any games that can properly depict war in its extremely stressful and horrific light? Or will we only really be able to to get that sort of experience made eventually through VR? I feel like, thinking about the potential of AI, this could be one of the few genres that AI would be almost necessary to properly make a less gamey more overbearing experience.

I'm going to reread Higurashi from the beginning after completing 7/8 of the original arcs then stopping several years ago - I don't remember why. However the console arcs seem complicated and I'm unsure of the order in which I should read them. Going with how the series was originally released, I feel I should read the original 8, then Rei, then the console arcs in chronological order.

Please, give me your advice.

Thank you, I suppose that makes sense. I think I'm just going to do the release order more or less; I read a very brief synopsis of the console arcs and it sounds like they are intended to be read after you've completed the main story. I read the first little part of Matsuribayashi up to and including some of the puzzles and just finished rereading Onikakushi; it's funny what I notice now with that extra knowledge compared to before, and I think I'm starting to get why the series is so well spoken of apart from just the story being engaging.

>>1248
My last saves in Minagoroshi were from around this time 3 years ago, so I don't remember too well. I didn't start Matsuribayashi after that, only starting it a few days ago. I have something of a problem where, when I near the end of a game, series or story that I'm enjoying I'll slow down my progress of it because I don't want it to end, which ironically ends it for me. If the console arcs and other content are as long as the main 8 however, I think it will take a while to get through everything.

Do either of you know if I can watch the 2006-2007 anime after reading the main 8 arcs? I recieved it many years ago from a friend via file transfer and I remember he said something about the anime being out of order and containing spoilers for later VN content.

It just doesn't seem right... A movie special would be fantastic, but wouldn't they refer to it as a movie? And wouldn't people assume 'sequel' meant the same format? Bleh, this could be some lost in translation stuff.
Well, movies do generally look a lot better so if this is just a shorter stand-alone movie then it is certainly going to be absolutely gorgeous. Looks like the same director is involved, although maybe anilist is just making an assumption there. But, I hope it turns out to be a one hour special leading into a new season. Or, maybe a holdover as the studio focuses on Fire Force.
I hope anyone here that was holding out giving the first 24 episodes a try will do so. It's really good and you can skip past all the recaps! At least give the first episode a watch, and then the first 4 or so with Gina.

Kissu people are talking Spice and Wolf quite a bit lately in relation to the remake, so I decided to watch the original. I'm still in the process of marathoning it, but I can definitely see why people like it so much. I avoided it because of the merchant stuff which I HATE, but the parts unrelated to spreading human misery are very good!
"Why did you make the thread before you finished it?" you might ask. Well, because my neck hurts from laying in bed watching it for 6 hours and I don't want to go into spoiler territory in the OP.

Anyway, I figure a centralized place to talk about the show and manga and whatever else might be a good idea since people are so eager to talk about it (including me now!)

I don't think the recent episodes changed much from the original, but my memory for this stuff isn't the best. The purple lighting was an interesting style choice, but not one I would have chosen. It of clashes with the muted colors, but that's probably the intention.
The cute moments are still good, but the romantic stuff really isn't here yet so I can't judge that part. Her voice is still amazing.

Played DD2. Some fps issues in the main city, and at infrequent moments out in the world, but aside from that was at a frequent 60+ with RTX on. From what I can see the whole "Mostly Negative" thing on steam is from people getting outraged over mtx that are basically the same thing that Capcom's done in all their other games and people that have more major performance issues. Aside from that I've been having a lot of fun, the game's good. Opening isn't as bombastic as the first though so some people may take issue with that, and there's a bit of minor nitpicks that people may have, but on the whole it's still the same good DD gameplay that people know and love. Supposedly with a much longer story and bigger map if leaks are to be believed.

I made a Fern pawn as you can't make loli ones anymore so Schierke wasn't possible. She got a fair bit of usage so far.

There's a big patch out that seems focused on fixes and balance. I was waiting for something like this, but was beginning to lose hope in such a thing. I'm not sure how fat this would go in fixing everything, but it's good that they looked at it.

Looks like it added a new "Casual Mode' difficulty which I don't have any interest in, but I have to wonder why this is part of a difficulty choice:
>Less Stamina expended when dashing outside of battle.

How does that relate to difficulty at all? I remember in the first one, PC had mods to eliminate stamina use for running outside of combat. It offers no combat benefit, it just lets you move around the map faster. Pure quality of life.

Doesn't really seem like it does much if it's just minor tweaks and adjustments to everything. What the game really needed was increased variety of monsters and more boss monsters to fight. Let's not forget that it also created the idea of mandatory or expected modding support and that the games are infallable because modders can fix their problems later. The concept of mods also entered the normie sphere which meant monetization wasn't far behind, and bethesda took advantage of that with their creation club. Why pay your own devs to make piecemeal DLC when you can toss a thousand bucks at some modder to make it for you?

The point of attack will come at the five consecutive hairpin turns.

I'd like to see Greg Egan's Orthogonal trilogy adapted into an anime.
The setting is a universe with an alternate law of physics whose consequences include that
¥ light of different colours travels at different speeds and there is no maximum speed of light
¥ liquids largely don't exist as a state of matter, they're all explosively unstable
¥ temperature acts weirdly (I didn't quite understand it from the books and Greg's website but it seems like the characters use gases as a way to dump arbitrarily high amounts of heat energy from their bodies)
¥ the direction of the arrow of time is determined by local conditions (entropy I guess) and in the greater 4-dimensional universe, the worldlines of objects can go in any direction. You can be hit by a tiny meteorite whose worldline is perpendicular to yours, which you will experience as something traveling infinitely fast, punching a great hole through your stuff and massively damaging it
¥ related to the above, it's possible for time-reversed matter to interact with ordinary matter and both see time running backwards (e.g. objects reforming from a broken state) for the other
and more.

The consequence of the alternate physics most important to the plot is that it is possible for a spacecraft to accelerate away from a planet so that it is travelling infinitely fast, i.e. 'sideways' in 4D space relative to that planet, then turn around and return, such that a short time passes for the planet's inhabitants but many generations pass on the spacecraft. (In our universe, it's the other way around, a lot of time can pass for Earth but the spacecraft ages less)
The plot is a multi-generational drama centered on precisely such a spacecraft, which the inhabitants of the planet built to buy time against a world-ending catastrophe.

Now, a problem I have with Greg Egan's books is that I never really like the characters, I'm only there for the math and physics. The characters tend to be annoying, unlikeable 'Young Adult protagonist' snarkers, and I never care about their stupid emotional problems. The plots mostly aren't interesting to me (Orthogonal's plot is one of his better ones, he successfully portrays the epic scope of tPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

But.. how? It sounds utterly incomprehensible from the very beginning. You can fill in the blanks by ignoring things in the text, but how is anything going to look if time is so distorted on a fundamental level?

>¥ the direction of the arrow of time is determined by local conditions
this in particular seems pretty fucking trippy
like, how does regular matter interact with time-reversed matter? because of course there's a lot of stuff surrounding the broken object and only one part of a person going back in time i figure it'd really fuck them up
>Now, a problem I have with Greg Egan's books is that I never really like the characters, I'm only there for the math and physics.
kinda sounds like it's the same for him, seeing as he has a hundred thousand words on the topic but i can hardly find anything about worldbuilding, writing characters, or the like
the only reflection i managed to come across was his six paragraphs on avatar (the movie), giving it a short trashing
though he does have a several more pieces of fiction written, just seemingly no commentaries

don't get too hung up on the time-reversed matter thing it mostly comes up in the third book
