I used to love these threads on 4/a/. Pitch your own anime and judge other people's ideas. I will start:
¥Slice of life, CGDCT set in pre-colonial North America
¥Focus on a group of 4 native american girls, 12 year old or younger, living a tribal life
¥The anime would be a comedy with some ecchi elements but also comfy
¥Episodes revolve around stuff like hunting, fishing, cooking, going on adventures, etc
¥The girls would be half naked all the time

>hunting, fishing, cooking, going on adventures, etc
I'd watch that even just for this, independent and sustainable "living with nature" videos are pretty popular on youtube, I've watched some. The cute girls are a plus of course, I haven't seen many cute native american girls in anime, so that's a neat novelty factor too.
>The girls would be half naked all the time
I usually avoid ecchi, but if it feels like that part of the setting isn't forced, I'd still watch it, especially if it's comfy
>>5986
>carnage murder gf waging war on the world
I'd be curious about the logistics of it and consider watching it for the serious parts, but I'd reckon it'd be full of gratuitous violence and I personally don't vibe with that... There's definitely an audience for it though, even if it doesn't include me lol.
>>5987
>cool military mecha battles with mainly minor injuries allowing for a more lighthearted tone
>yuribait
I'd love this and definitely watch, I love cool mecha designs, yuri and suspense that doesn't rely on bloodbaths but just epic battle strategies with well designed equipment
>MC being a crossdressing boy
I wish the politics of "oh no, men are invading women's spaces in competitive sports" didn't exist so I could just wholly enjoy this premise as the standalone fun it should be. There could be a lore reason for why this specific MC boy needs to crossdress for it. Maybe something like, mechas are somehow marketed as a girl's thing because all the boys use enhanced body armour or some other tech instead and think clunky mechas are beneath them and MC's family would disapprove if they knew he steered a mecha but he wants everyone to see and recognise the potential in mechas and the girls he meets want that too so even as they fight in battles they also fight to accomplish that goal and kinda work together for it too. Maybe, idk. But even without good justifications, I'd still check it out.

Anime in which a young girl gets lost in a mysterious forest and has to find her way back home. On the way, she finds both friends and fiends and teams up with her newfound (animal? kemonomimi? fellow lost kids?) companions to fight the big wolf that prevents people from leaving. Inspired by little red riding hood but with magic powers and battles.

So I just started this series. Partway through ep 3 and I'm getting the urge to rant. Bear with me.
Everything about it is so high quality, but I just can't help but be rubbed the wrong way by this attitude it has with the past, which you see EVERYWHERE.
For context, I'm not religious at all.

But this mindset that's so common is one of unearned smug superiority. Standing on the shoulders of giants, absorbing so much fact through osmosis, and having this better-than-they, smarter-than-they idea about the people of the past, with no consideration for historical or cultural realities......

It's hard to put into words exactly, but the premise of this anime is that the main character is in 15th century Europe and wants to prove heliocentrism in spite of persecution.
So from the very start we, with our modern osmosis-knowledge, start with the certainty that the protagonist and right and the accepted opinion of his world is wrong.

I for one couldn't prove heliocentrism in that era. Neither could >99% of the population. Of course with modern technology, modern scientific consensus, etc we know it to be true, and now even poor idiots wouldn't doubt it. Not because they know WHY they shouldn't doubt it, but just because it's the common view of the day.

I just feel like it's so presumptuous to write a story where, not only is the whole world wrong, but we as outside observers KNOW it's wrong and are meant to feel smug about that knowledge. "Oh those STEWPID 1400s churchmen and their campaign against the obvious truth!"

Besides which, it's just historically inaccurate. I get the feeling that it's maybe supposed to be Not!Europe, and either way it's not a biography or anything, but in the early 15th century nobody was burned for promoting heliocentrism. Copernicus lived a long life promoting it. It didn't catch on, since it went against established thought, but it wasn't generally considered heresy.

I think you're over-analyzing it a bit, especially for being only 3 episodes in of a 25 episode show. I'm a bit limited to what I can say since you're at the beginning and I don't want to spoil it. But, I don't really see it as some critique against historical injustices but rather a story set in a world that may or may not be different from ours.
You need to watch much more of it before I (or others) can say much else.
Give it a chance, it's a really good show and we have a whole lot of talk about it here when it aired (and I'm sure we can have a bunch more in this thread)

 No.6245

I think I'd say that the Prologue(episodes 1-3) and part.2(12-20 i think) are the weakest parts of the story because it becomes a little too preachy about philosophy and religion. The prologue too much religion, part 2 too much philosophy. But the real meat of the series is Part 1. and the epilogue is a touch of surrealism.

I'd say that most of what you wrote is true of the prologue, but you'd be est to watch until episode 12 before forming a partial critique of where it's going

Yeah for sure I'll give it the shot it deserves.
But I was sitting in bed sort of thinking this stuff to myself. Really, it wasn't entirely inspired by this show, just a thought I often have when it comes to "historical" fiction. Too much of this assumption that people were dumber in the past, you know. I can't stand it.
It was just brought out by watching the first few episodes of this.
And I thought to myself, now where's a place where I could discuss this on and off for a few weeks?

I thought basically everything you brought up too and was pleasantly surprised that the author is also aware of them and addresses them. It does lean on the whole "you know they're right" thing to make the protagonists look justified, especially towards the end, but it's really not a one-sided bashing of the Church. It's actually kind of a bait-and-switch where it starts you out with some church bad tropes, but even then if you stop and examine it you see that our first introduction to heliocentrism is a guy who is granted a second chance by the Church and uses it to threaten a child with violence so he can continue his treacherous studies. Without the historical context he looks completely evil.

This episode had me bursting out laughing quite a few times like a good episode of Futurama. Absolutely marvelous timing, visual gags (accomplished with phenomenal animation btw), sound usage, and seiyuu work. And now that I think about it more than just dark humor, it's dry humor as well which I don't think gets used quite as often in Anime. It was a great big fad when I was in primary school. Kids would trade cards and the teachers banned it because it led to fights.
My best friend at the time would mispronounce its name on purpose, calling it "yu-gi-ho". Nobody called him on it, at least no teacher did.
I followed the dubbed anime on school day mornings from the beginning but not every episode. I never really got what was going on.

Recently came back with the release of Master Duel and essentially caught up with everything that's been out (both metagame and anime) since then, bar rush duels.

The most appealing factor of the card game is no rotating decks (no """Standard""") and no mana ramping system. That said, I intentionally stay in Platinum/Diamond so I face a bigger variety of decks and so I can also play my rogues.

It's such a fantastic show. I give extra points for anime originals so I think at least for the time being it's the show of the season. It's good to see cygames using their evil gacha money to make something like this. Huh, looking at the studio itself they also did Bang Bravern.
I'm a sucker for this genre of exploring a world that has greatly changed and it's really excelling at it as it makes cliche things entertaining with the characters and style. I was a little bit disappointed that the Tanuki stayed around, but as long as Yachiyo remains the main character I guess they're useful as plot devices and the girl is fun.

What are your favorite controller designs? Are there any old, system-specific controllers that you prefer to use over modern ones? Or do you like being able to use the same controller for everything now?

I generally enjoy the better ergonomics of the modern ones, but I always feel weird playing N64 games with new controllers because using the right analog stick for the c buttons feels weird, especially for games like Paper Mario where they're used for menus instead of camera controls.

At least for old consoles, I don't think I've ever outright hated any first-party controller and never really thought about if I'd prefer a different one for a certain console. For everything else I prefer Dualshocks because I'm so used to both analog sticks being in the middle and the button layout is the only one I know by heart.

I find the two new "handle buttons" on the Switch 2 Pro Controller interesting. Perhaps in the future handle buttons could become a way to have both analog and digital triggers on the same controller? I feel like that's the only thing still missing for the ultimate controller that has every feature.

Right now I don't have a favourite controller anymore. It's like everything I try has a bad flaw for me.
- Nostalgia pick: Snes. I always loved the shape and comfort. I picked one of those 8bitdo Pro 2 that are more or less the snes design with analog sticks and grips, but the d-pad is not great.
- All Around safe pick: Dual Shock 4. If I only could have one controller, it would be this. shape is acceptable, the d-pad is accurate enough and can works well with almost every game. The problem is that the d-pad is murder on thumbs, and well... the battery issue.

I may have a new favourite, though: The HVC-102 "dog bone" controller that comes with the AV Famicom. I have been trying it for 2 days, and the d-pad is something else. For years I have been worried about getting so bad at classic games that maybe I'm just too old, until I tried this one and found out that it's not me, but bad d-pads. Suddenly I hate the one on the Steam Deck.

The peak game controller is whatever that has the buttons and ergonomics to offer you the advantages of using the double claw grip with ease for your hands and wrists.
I only ever used Chinese crap, some old Xbox, Logitech, DS4 gamepads, and the last one is the only one I still have and which I used for serious double claw grip.
It was rather uncomfortable even when I was younger, and I just instinctively exercised my hands at every pause.
I have minor wrist tendon pain nowadays (from a phone a bit too big, and not being careful enough at my job) and I wouldn't risk it to try a day of intense dual claw gaming session on DS4.
I always thought that controllers' general shape should be customizable to some extent, even if with a screwdriver.

My idea for another Solitaire RPG.

Draw 2 cards from the deck. This is your enemy HP. Your enemy's attack strength is the HP remaining.

You start off the game with 20 HP and 20 MP.

Every turn, discard your hand and draw 5 cards. You must pick 2 cards to use.
In addition, you have room to save 1 card for later use.

A card's suit determines its function:
- Spades: Power attack. If you use a power attack, you cannot use any other cards for this turn.
- Clubs: Magic attack. The number is the attack power and mana cost.
- Hearts: Heals you for the number on the card.
- Diamonds: Restores your mana for the number on the card.

If you're going for an alternate count with physical tokens, then I imagine the number of each is fairly low. Like DnD gets silly with HP counts so it's not viable there.
My crackjob idea is dice bottles. That could be interesting for a low count of each. Each MP point is a single blue die and you can roll them for modifiers on that spell. Taking damage makes you roll one or more red dice and you compare the result on an effect table. Like say a troll bonks you for 2 wounds, you roll the dice to see if you're okay, stunned, or get knocked unconscious; this means a large enough hit has guaranteed negative and likely severe results, where a light hit doing 1 wound leaves you okay or lightly impacted.

I've noticed that there's a bit of talk here and there at times about big named directors like Shinbo or Ikuhara in threads about there respective anime. Similarly there's "the /qa/ voice" and a few threads in the past made about favorite seiyuu's. With the more recent Seiyuu Radio thread I got a bit more interested in asking /qa/, how much do you pay attention to who's making the anime you enjoy and how conscious of their work are you while watching?

For myself I mostly know seiyuu, studios, composers, singers, and directors since those are more the big in your face part of anime, but I also can recognize a few character designers like Akio Watanabe/Amazuyu Tatsuki. I also know a few (non-director) animators by name, though I can't really tell who's who from just watching an anime like it's occasionally possible to do with directors/studios. Not even sure if it is possible.

Maybe it's a bit meta for some people, but I think it can be valuable and give you a greater appreciation of anime you really enjoy or lead you to finding other works with them included that you may also love. It can also be an interesting experience to go through the catalog of a director to watch how they grew over the years. A similar thing applies to seiyuu, and with them there's also the feeling of hearing a new voice you don't recognize that absolutely hits it out of the park and astounds you, like Utena from MahoAko.

When I pick up a new show, I make sure to read the credits and spot connections to understand the industry a little better. So many people lay hands on every anime that just watching isn't enough for me to recognize the fingerprints of staff who aren't both of an eccentric style and playing an important role like director. Even people whose work I'm very familiar with and am a fan of can easily evade my detection. This season I would have never guessed that Xebec's Takami Akio contributed keyframes for RockLady's OP if I hadn't read the credits. Fun facts like that abound, so read the credits!

I like when I hear new Seiyuu that impress me because sometimes anime becomes oversaturated with the same voices. Especially when they don't have much range or are being directed to use their recognizable voice. Aoi Yuuki being a victim of the latter because while I can recognize her as Maomao when I think about it she does a great job being Maomao and not Aoi Yuuki.

I think most recently some of my favorite new voices have been Bocchi (https://myanimelist.net/people/24269/Yoshino_Aoyama) and Utena (https://myanimelist.net/people/64390/Fuuka_Izumi)

Huh, AquaPlus is putting up full episodes of ToHeart for a limited time on youtube now. Well, limited time for AquaPlus, I think I've seen other official channels with full episodes of anime just perpetually up.

Hmmm... what could it mean? Could they be working on the third? They already have their plate full with some other stuff I thought, but who knows.
Or maybe just another anime adaptation?

I mean if you look at the channel it's probably part of promoting the remake that's coming out soon.

Oh, I thought it had already come out in Japan a couple months ago? That would do it, yeah.

I'm reading through Uta 2 and 3 again with someone else in the VN thread planning to read it soon, so I think Utawarerumono deserves its own thread again! I did manage to take two previous Utawarerumono /qa/ threads to bump limit back when Season 3 of the anime was airing back in 2022 so let's go for a third!

REPLIES IN MY UTAWARERUMONO THREAD?!?!

>One thing I found quaint was how [spoilers]
Yeah, the people were very simple. I feel like the proxies were intentionally made dumber than humans in order to prevent them from repeating the mistakes of humanity. Can't nuke the world if you'll never be smart enough to build them. This is why it was a major thing in the story when Raiko used bombs, but it's unclear if he made them or if he was provided them by Woshis.

>I can only assume the localizers did a good job
Yeah, it's well known as a very high quality work. I remember a screenshot of one of the translators replying to something on youtube. They were clearly passionate about it.
And yes, Aquaplus is really, truly amazing at characterization! I greatly look forward to anything they write. It's not uncommon for people to complain about the "slice of life" moments in Utawareremono, but building up the characters during these scenes was very important.

And yeah, your last point is a common complaint as well. I feel like the combat system of 2 and 3 was really amazing with all the specialization of characters, but I feel like they didn't utilize them enough. Something that forced you to rely on those skills more like those bonus puzzle battles would be great.

Yeah, the other post is something I agree with. The sex scenes were very awkward and forced, a strong contrast to something like ToHeart where it's the culmination of a character's arc and displays their personality. You're really not missing anything.

It felt like Kuon had the slowest overzeal drain. She could just stay in overzeal forever which was a neat way to use that item that boosted stats while overzealing.

Ougi on the opposite end was pretty cool being the skillful ninja with a fitting skillful playstyle letting him instantly overzeal if you do the hidden timings, then it drained quickly letting you do it again.
One character I never really felt out was Nosuri, I know she's the nimble archer counterpart to Kiwru, but I never really knew what to use her for, just unga bunga bombarded with Kiwru instead.

I used Nosuri instead of Kiwru in my first playthrough. I'm trying to remember the differences between them, but I think Nosuri had superior range while Kiwru was better if you could pull enemies to him. I think she worked best as a compliment to Ougi (naturally) to pick a distant enemy to obliterate.
I never really got into Kuon's playstyle much, although I love her for being Kuon. I guess she can work alongside other characters to give you a bit of extra damage/healing/buffing, but I generally like hyper specialization. Then you lose her as a playable character...

I like nekone because you can heal AND attack and she bites and scratches me

WHAT
I liked using her as a filler unit, nearly impossible to waste a turn with ranged attacks and healing which also lets her keep overzeal going. I thought her stats were above average in most ways but maybe I was comparing her too much to Haku I don't remember for sure. And then later she can element shift to further get the advantage, although she was often in fire element for me because her no-counter attack forces fire

I've heard the first ZAN is kinda mid but ZAN 2 is good? I'm not eager to spend money right now but it does look like it would be fun to play a musou recap of the story.

Mono is really reminding me of Joshiraku where half the episode (the JK SOL part) is really high quality and the other half (the hag tourism part) is super boring. It just feels like filler that doesn't make use of any of the characters they set up. Yuru Camp had the same problem too, but at least it spent the early parts building up the characters more and had a greater emphasis on atmosphere so it wasn't as pronounced. A couple cameos don't make me want to sit through a procession of location cuts with girls going "ohh, look at that."

>I've never really understood the praise it gets
I can only assume it's the production values (of the first season) propping it up because it's a very mid-tier Kirara in all aspects other than the scenery and soundtrack.

Yuru Camp is good because Nadeshiko is cute.

Sugiredo actually had a similar setup, but I think it worked a lot better because it was focused on one trip and devoted time to character interaction segments between the sightseeing slideshows. My opinion on the two shows' relative standing has basically flipped this week.

I get the impression that the third episode was something of an outlier. There was minimal focus on photography with the entire episode acting as fanservice. The issue is that people who are watching Mono have probably watched Yurucamp, so it just ends up being an episode of the latter minus actual camping. Maybe I get this impression a bit more because I'm rewatching Yurucamp cocurrently.

Did you guys like Super Cub? I should probably rewatch that too because it fell victim to my bad habit of watching 11/12 episodes then never watching the last.

No I felt the same thing. That episode was for the Yurucamp fans. I was thinking that they basically go camping in Mono, and they take photos in Yurucamp, so really they're like the same show but with different characters.
