What are your favorite controller designs? Are there any old, system-specific controllers that you prefer to use over modern ones? Or do you like being able to use the same controller for everything now?

I generally enjoy the better ergonomics of the modern ones, but I always feel weird playing N64 games with new controllers because using the right analog stick for the c buttons feels weird, especially for games like Paper Mario where they're used for menus instead of camera controls.

At least for old consoles, I don't think I've ever outright hated any first-party controller and never really thought about if I'd prefer a different one for a certain console. For everything else I prefer Dualshocks because I'm so used to both analog sticks being in the middle and the button layout is the only one I know by heart.

I find the two new "handle buttons" on the Switch 2 Pro Controller interesting. Perhaps in the future handle buttons could become a way to have both analog and digital triggers on the same controller? I feel like that's the only thing still missing for the ultimate controller that has every feature.

Right now I don't have a favourite controller anymore. It's like everything I try has a bad flaw for me.
- Nostalgia pick: Snes. I always loved the shape and comfort. I picked one of those 8bitdo Pro 2 that are more or less the snes design with analog sticks and grips, but the d-pad is not great.
- All Around safe pick: Dual Shock 4. If I only could have one controller, it would be this. shape is acceptable, the d-pad is accurate enough and can works well with almost every game. The problem is that the d-pad is murder on thumbs, and well... the battery issue.

I may have a new favourite, though: The HVC-102 "dog bone" controller that comes with the AV Famicom. I have been trying it for 2 days, and the d-pad is something else. For years I have been worried about getting so bad at classic games that maybe I'm just too old, until I tried this one and found out that it's not me, but bad d-pads. Suddenly I hate the one on the Steam Deck.

The peak game controller is whatever that has the buttons and ergonomics to offer you the advantages of using the double claw grip with ease for your hands and wrists.
I only ever used Chinese crap, some old Xbox, Logitech, DS4 gamepads, and the last one is the only one I still have and which I used for serious double claw grip.
It was rather uncomfortable even when I was younger, and I just instinctively exercised my hands at every pause.
I have minor wrist tendon pain nowadays (from a phone a bit too big, and not being careful enough at my job) and I wouldn't risk it to try a day of intense dual claw gaming session on DS4.
I always thought that controllers' general shape should be customizable to some extent, even if with a screwdriver.

My idea for another Solitaire RPG.

Draw 2 cards from the deck. This is your enemy HP. Your enemy's attack strength is the HP remaining.

You start off the game with 20 HP and 20 MP.

Every turn, discard your hand and draw 5 cards. You must pick 2 cards to use.
In addition, you have room to save 1 card for later use.

A card's suit determines its function:
- Spades: Power attack. If you use a power attack, you cannot use any other cards for this turn.
- Clubs: Magic attack. The number is the attack power and mana cost.
- Hearts: Heals you for the number on the card.
- Diamonds: Restores your mana for the number on the card.

If you're going for an alternate count with physical tokens, then I imagine the number of each is fairly low. Like DnD gets silly with HP counts so it's not viable there.
My crackjob idea is dice bottles. That could be interesting for a low count of each. Each MP point is a single blue die and you can roll them for modifiers on that spell. Taking damage makes you roll one or more red dice and you compare the result on an effect table. Like say a troll bonks you for 2 wounds, you roll the dice to see if you're okay, stunned, or get knocked unconscious; this means a large enough hit has guaranteed negative and likely severe results, where a light hit doing 1 wound leaves you okay or lightly impacted.

I've noticed that there's a bit of talk here and there at times about big named directors like Shinbo or Ikuhara in threads about there respective anime. Similarly there's "the /qa/ voice" and a few threads in the past made about favorite seiyuu's. With the more recent Seiyuu Radio thread I got a bit more interested in asking /qa/, how much do you pay attention to who's making the anime you enjoy and how conscious of their work are you while watching?

For myself I mostly know seiyuu, studios, composers, singers, and directors since those are more the big in your face part of anime, but I also can recognize a few character designers like Akio Watanabe/Amazuyu Tatsuki. I also know a few (non-director) animators by name, though I can't really tell who's who from just watching an anime like it's occasionally possible to do with directors/studios. Not even sure if it is possible.

Maybe it's a bit meta for some people, but I think it can be valuable and give you a greater appreciation of anime you really enjoy or lead you to finding other works with them included that you may also love. It can also be an interesting experience to go through the catalog of a director to watch how they grew over the years. A similar thing applies to seiyuu, and with them there's also the feeling of hearing a new voice you don't recognize that absolutely hits it out of the park and astounds you, like Utena from MahoAko.

When I pick up a new show, I make sure to read the credits and spot connections to understand the industry a little better. So many people lay hands on every anime that just watching isn't enough for me to recognize the fingerprints of staff who aren't both of an eccentric style and playing an important role like director. Even people whose work I'm very familiar with and am a fan of can easily evade my detection. This season I would have never guessed that Xebec's Takami Akio contributed keyframes for RockLady's OP if I hadn't read the credits. Fun facts like that abound, so read the credits!

I like when I hear new Seiyuu that impress me because sometimes anime becomes oversaturated with the same voices. Especially when they don't have much range or are being directed to use their recognizable voice. Aoi Yuuki being a victim of the latter because while I can recognize her as Maomao when I think about it she does a great job being Maomao and not Aoi Yuuki.

I think most recently some of my favorite new voices have been Bocchi (https://myanimelist.net/people/24269/Yoshino_Aoyama) and Utena (https://myanimelist.net/people/64390/Fuuka_Izumi)

REPLIES IN MY UTAWARERUMONO THREAD?!?!

>One thing I found quaint was how [spoilers]
Yeah, the people were very simple. I feel like the proxies were intentionally made dumber than humans in order to prevent them from repeating the mistakes of humanity. Can't nuke the world if you'll never be smart enough to build them. This is why it was a major thing in the story when Raiko used bombs, but it's unclear if he made them or if he was provided them by Woshis.

>I can only assume the localizers did a good job
Yeah, it's well known as a very high quality work. I remember a screenshot of one of the translators replying to something on youtube. They were clearly passionate about it.
And yes, Aquaplus is really, truly amazing at characterization! I greatly look forward to anything they write. It's not uncommon for people to complain about the "slice of life" moments in Utawareremono, but building up the characters during these scenes was very important.

And yeah, your last point is a common complaint as well. I feel like the combat system of 2 and 3 was really amazing with all the specialization of characters, but I feel like they didn't utilize them enough. Something that forced you to rely on those skills more like those bonus puzzle battles would be great.

>>5368
Yeah, the other post is something I agree with. The sex scenes were very awkward and forced, a strong contrast to something like ToHeart where it's the culmination of a character's arc and displays their personality. You're really not missing anything.

It felt like Kuon had the slowest overzeal drain. She could just stay in overzeal forever which was a neat way to use that item that boosted stats while overzealing.

Ougi on the opposite end was pretty cool being the skillful ninja with a fitting skillful playstyle letting him instantly overzeal if you do the hidden timings, then it drained quickly letting you do it again.
One character I never really felt out was Nosuri, I know she's the nimble archer counterpart to Kiwru, but I never really knew what to use her for, just unga bunga bombarded with Kiwru instead.

I used Nosuri instead of Kiwru in my first playthrough. I'm trying to remember the differences between them, but I think Nosuri had superior range while Kiwru was better if you could pull enemies to him. I think she worked best as a compliment to Ougi (naturally) to pick a distant enemy to obliterate.
I never really got into Kuon's playstyle much, although I love her for being Kuon. I guess she can work alongside other characters to give you a bit of extra damage/healing/buffing, but I generally like hyper specialization. Then you lose her as a playable character...

WHAT
I liked using her as a filler unit, nearly impossible to waste a turn with ranged attacks and healing which also lets her keep overzeal going. I thought her stats were above average in most ways but maybe I was comparing her too much to Haku I don't remember for sure. And then later she can element shift to further get the advantage, although she was often in fire element for me because her no-counter attack forces fire

Mono is really reminding me of Joshiraku where half the episode (the JK SOL part) is really high quality and the other half (the hag tourism part) is super boring. It just feels like filler that doesn't make use of any of the characters they set up. Yuru Camp had the same problem too, but at least it spent the early parts building up the characters more and had a greater emphasis on atmosphere so it wasn't as pronounced. A couple cameos don't make me want to sit through a procession of location cuts with girls going "ohh, look at that."

I get the impression that the third episode was something of an outlier. There was minimal focus on photography with the entire episode acting as fanservice. The issue is that people who are watching Mono have probably watched Yurucamp, so it just ends up being an episode of the latter minus actual camping. Maybe I get this impression a bit more because I'm rewatching Yurucamp cocurrently.

No I felt the same thing. That episode was for the Yurucamp fans. I was thinking that they basically go camping in Mono, and they take photos in Yurucamp, so really they're like the same show but with different characters.

Since the Switch 2 is coming out finally, I've been taking the opportunity to work my way through the Switch library and I really don't see how it's become such a big thing. Once you take out all the inferior Wii U ports and demakes, the top games are:
¥ the worst Zelda games outside of the cd-i
¥ the worst 3D Mario game
¥ another totally-not-NSMB but without fun multiplayer or level flow
¥ the worst Fire Emblems since Gaiden
¥ the worst Pokemon games of all time
¥ the new worst Pokemon games of all time
¥ babbies first XCOM
¥ babbies first Valkyria Chronicles
¥ the worst Pikmin of all time, and that includes Hey!

It feels like the whole library of new stuff is just legacy franchises running on fumes. It's probably only better than the Wii U by merit of porting over all of its good games already. It's just baffling to me that this is one of their most successful consoles of all time when all the stuff that held up previous consoles is floundering hard this time around. Dread is the only thing left on my list I have any real hope for. Am I missing something or is the console really just being propped up by norms being able to play PC indies on the go?

I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, but I'm mentally twisting myself into knots just trying to play devil's advocate over this. This genuinely reads like the sort of bait I'd read on 4chan's /v/. Olimar Mode alone pushes Pikmin 4 miles ahead of Hey Pikmin.

Hey went for something completely different and did an acceptable job at it. I understand if you dislike the approach, but i's not a mainline game and it makes no attempt to pass itself off as one. It's a decent puzzle-platformer to pass time with on your handheld.

Pikmin 4 is a bastardization of the formula and Olimar mode is a giant troll. It pretends to offer you traditional Pikmin 1 gameplay with a little extra challenge and the first two or three days are great, the it shoves a big middle finger in your face and tells you to hop on the fucking dog and use the fucking superpowers that materialize out of thin air every night if you want to progress any more.

 No.5783

>>5776
I think our fundamental disagreement is on the dogs (and a lot of the other additional features, honestly, although I'm more sympathetic about your complaints regarding the items). They do make 4 even easier than 3 with regards to just beating the game with minimal losses, but I also think if we're looking at this from an efficient play perspective, they're just an additional tool in the toolbelt. You should realistically split your time between riding them and using them as a second captain, for example, as the situation demands, and that adds some more depth than prior, where the incentive to keep the captains together is relatively small.

I mentioned Olimar Mode in particular for that reason, too, since it cuts away a lot of the additional bullshit that 4's main mode in favour of something which makes it clear the focus is on getting as much done in as little time as possible. It's really good at getting you to think about the best way to navigate the maps and made me appreciate their design. In comparison, Hey Pikmin is just a mediocre-alright puzzle platformer, highly forgettable fodder.

 No.5784

>>5783
>Hey Pikmin is just a mediocre-alright puzzle platformer, highly forgettable fodder.
I agree with you there, that's why I use it to emphasize how much 4 pisses me off.

There are hardly any reasons to split off from the dog because the speed boost, movement abilities, and attack power he provides are just too good. Outside of the very early game where your pikmin limit prevents you from multitasking anyway he's never going to be stopped long enough to switch around anyway, so you only break up in those late game challenges so you can abuse his 100 weight carrying. The normal levels just aren't laid out for walking speed, which is only emphasized by the jumps that force you to use him just to traverse. 3's multitasking was good because they existed purely to do multitasking and face things from different angles. Maybe if you're doing speedruns there are situations where splitting up in 4 is optimal, but in normal play it's just creating unnecessary risk.

Basically, the other captains didn't replace the pikmin, the dog does.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Combat, exploration, party building, and the silly extra stuff are all fun, music is great, and the setting and story so far are cool. Only real issue I have with it is a lot of the character writing is pretty bad, mostly the women. They're all pretty bland and dialogue just kind of drags on without actually saying much.
Mostly though it's just exciting to play a game that actually feels like a new thing instead of just tweaking something I've played before.

And to actually answer the question in the OP no I'm mostly just dodging because I'm a coward but the times I do parry the counters seem really strong so I probably should do it more.

Have you ever completed the original games? I recently went back to the first one and finished the first difficulties quite easily. Some levels are way harder than the others in those ones though.

What's the appeal of these games? They seem quite simple as you only have a few options to pick from. But you usually need to find a way to delay the lemmings, build bridges and dig tunnels precisely while exploiting some behaviors like interrupting a digger with the builder skill.

I recommend using SuperLemmix as it adds QoL features like rewinding, turbo fast forward, hotkeys and replay saving while having a nice interface. It also includes all original levels released with the different versions of the game and retains classic gameplay. New skills like "swimmer" and "grenadier" are also available on NeoLemmix/SuperLemmix but they're made for custom levels, like the Lemmings 2 inspired ones, and are not available in the originals. For more information, read the official threads on Lemmings Forums!

Note: you might have fullscreen issues when playing through Wine, use a virtual fullscreen or play in windowed mode to avoid that issue.

>is it worth playing the PSP era remake, or is it too casual?
At the time, it was probably the best way to play the original game. It has a zoom feature, fast-fowarding and you can assign skills to lemmings when the game is paused (which is a welcomed QoL feature as you don't have to restart the level that often). The PSP-exclusive levels are also nice and fit the original game nicely. It also includes a level editor but I never tried to share my levels with others. So, except if you consider Lemmings 1 easy or if you really hate features that avoid wasting your time, the game isn't casual.

Nowadays, I'd play the unofficial ports mentioned in the OP as they have even more features than the PSP version and they including a level editor. The only things I miss from the PSP version are the nice backgrounds/textures and the much more relaxing OST. It's still a good game to play on the go, on original hardware or on your phone.

According to the SuperLemmix forum page, it supports 2 players levels. Never tried to play with a friend though.

I have vague memories of playing the DOS version as a kid, was not very bright so I struggled quite a lot. Guess I don't have an excuse to have it remain unfinished, appreciate the resources!

I was wary of Lazarus from the start considering it looked like there was a strong western hand in it to the point the main releases were for the dub, but the action was well done so I gave it a chance. And what I get is an episode where a transgender talks to a black about how discrimination drove them to be homeless/criminals. Considering the premise of the show is "what if the government approved an unsafe medication that ended up killing everyone who took it after a few years" I really thought that it would only be political in the kooky conspiracy theory way you can laugh at. This just kills my interest.

I think you're trying to provoke OP instead of trying to have a meaningful discussion with him.

True. If you grabbed Cowboy Bebop and replaced everything outside of the writing with Lazarus' quality of animation, character design, and soundtrack, Bebop would've been considered pretty boring.

To some extent, because I find such types tiring. "oh no the story has a thing I don't like politically in it" is a very frustrating useless form of critique.
Especially when it comes in the variety of "this was thrown in FOR NO REASON", clearly it is there for a reason. Things in stories are generally present for reasons. This sort of attitude makes me wonder if there is a point about the media in question being made at all, or whether it is an attempt at signaling certain beliefs to others.

To show some good faith:

How would Lazarus need to address those issues for it to be doing so "seriously"?

 No.5717

Not to get political, but I was skeptical from the moment the first character on screen was a black person, gave it a try until they reached the trans. Dropped it instantly.

There's a real dirth of cool martial arts inspired choreography in the industry today so I'm going to watch it anyway.

Because Watanabe is so talented on the visual side of the things personally he's also always attracted a lot of talent in that field to work with him. Tensai Okamura is responsible for a lot of those great action scenes storyboards in Bebop, and he's back working on Lazarus, for a low hanging example.

Why do people ignore 60's and 70's Anime so much? I've been on a kick of older Anime and Showa Era Tokusatsu, and I've always been so confused as to why people would ignore these great shows. Mazinger Z, Dororo, Ashita No Joe. and others. I feel as if this is an underrated time period for the art form.
The Real question is Why Haven't YOU Checked out something from the 60's and 70s.

Well for me I look at 0079 and think the layouts/storyboards are better than Zeta, even if Zeta's animation is frequently better in a narrowly defined sense.
I do agree with you that the early 80's feel more like an extension of the 70's tv boom years than what people typically think of as 80's anime.

No nostalgia for it in the Anglosphere.
Anime boomed in the West over the course of the 90s and early 00s.
So 80s OVA and 90s and 00s TV shows form the nostalgic core of the community.
Something from before that age is just basically foreign, even to veterans of the anime community.
I like 60s and 70s manga, for sure. But the anime stuff is a black box to me I don't really want to bother with.

For how much JP seems to love the J9 series it sure is odd how it's almost never talked about in the West. From what I've heard it's a pretty rad spy/mecha anime too.

Watch Versailles no Bara. I genuinely think it looks better than most stuff coming out today. For me, definitive proof that art direction is more important than animation.

I started that not long ago, but felt I was watching too much of Dezaki's anime. I'll hold off on it for now.
