Tried to play the new DOOM: The Dark Refund today and it kinda sucked. I enjoyed the shit out of eternal and to a similar extent 2016 when they came out, but this one I just couldn't get into out the gate. I think it's because of how tryhard the story is when it comes to being 'epic' or 'awesome'. The writing in these games has never been that good but in 2016 and eternal I was mostly able to push them aside and out of mind to focus on the gameplay more. But in this game it's front and center and impossible to really glaze my eyes over (especially since tabbing out brings up the pause menu), they just can't write for shit and I wish they'd realize this. It's not that you can't skip the cutscenes, it's pretty easy to do, but it's just really annoying and messes up the flow if you do and there's still ingame stuff as well that nags on you. The gameplay in this is still fine, arcadey arena shooter and all with secrets galore scattered across the map. Although, I feel like the secrets have been getting less and less exciting since 2016, used to be actual upgrades and early weapons and such but now it's just stupid trinkets and lore items and I don't care for them. I think that eternal was a bit more quick and snappy, though I'll have to go back after a sale and see how this one turns out to be near the endgame when you have all upgrades and such. Also it doesn't really help for me that right before I booted it up I was playing minecraft and another indie game which have very noninvasive tutorials and minimal railroading while this game stops the gameplay every 20 seconds to force you to learn something new or show off some new enemy and I got tired of that real fast.

But above all else what made me decide I had enough and wanted to refund it was while just in a level I was on high quality settings with even DLSS enabled on a 3090 and I was getting sub60 fps. Combined with everything else that pissed me off so much I alt-f4'd out straight to the purchase history screen to request my refund.

I was always surprised everyone seems to be able to ignore the story even in 2016, it was already annoying me in that combined with not enjoying the gameplay so I never finished it. The new one looks very much like a superhero movie to me, or like the developers kept giggling and glancing at each other when adding the "epic" things.

That's kinda how I feel about it too. It's as though they were going for something "cool" but at the same time thought themselves too above just being actually cool so they had to do it in an ironic way or something. It doesn't feel authentic or genuine. It's just someone's idea of what cool should be instead of a clear vision of what it is and it really takes me out of enjoying the story at all. And I know it's not a problem on my end of being unable to enjoy cool things because Space Marine II was cool and AA (AAA?), and I thoroughly enjoyed the story in that one.

I did like the gameplay though and I think DOOM does itself many favors in being really fun to play if you like the fast-paced arena combat style it presents. Although I like playing on nightmare so something that maybe unintentionally took me out of the game as well on the dev's end is all the custom difficulty options. There's ways to adjust it so that it's way harder than nightmare and it makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong by just selecting nightmare and saying "ok that's it" but then again I've played other games where I haven't played on optional extra sadism mode and I didn't feel cheated.

This latest episode of Apocalypse Hotel is what it should have been from the start.
I checked the new releases for today, saw that new Apocalypse Hotel episode was out, almost didn't want to watch it; but this episode was good. Starting off strong with the 'cooners leaving the hotel, then a new guest arrives who actually bonds with Yachiyo, and even shows us what the post apocalyptic world looks like. It reminded me of "Somali to Mori no Kamisama".
There was almost no racoons this episode, but the times when they showed the girl racoon really broke the immersion into what was going on between Yachiyo and the new guest. Racoons were the worst thing that happened to the show.

I hate the coons, but Ponko's joke landed really well. The episode as a whole was an improvement, but even without the tanooks the random battle scene was still there to inject wacky alien stuff into any somber reflection of civilization's demise. There really is no taking back them skipping 400 years without the hotel changing at all. Humans don't build tech to last that long.

For me it was this:
1. Nose and mouth too high up, making her face look squished together and her chin look oddly big
2. Head shape oddly flat on one side, making it look slightly pointy instead of round
3. Tiniest ear

(Also, her eyes are kinda misaligned, her cheek jots out a bit oddly and her chin is pointed in an odd direction, but that's very minor in this case compared to the other stuff.)

I edited her nose and mouth lower, made the ear bigger and added some padding for a rounder head shape. Then I edited the eyes, cheek and chin a bit.

Hmm having played it a bit, still seems like it's in ultra alpha with floaty controls and little new content since I last played it a couple years ago. Some great new art, but yeah there's still a lot to go. I remember him saying he was taking a break for a while with the game's future to be determined, so it will be something that takes a long time to finish, if ever. I'm still in VOTOMs at the moment and while I'm enjoying it I'm starting to wonder if I should change my watch method from just watching the same series until its done and moving onto the next to watch 3-5 episodes from one series and another to alternate (either the same day or alternate each day) just so I don't have slowdowns like I had with Macross and now with VOTOMs. That's been my biggest problem with trying to catch up with anime is me slowing down my watch momentum on series that are long

It started off a bit slow but I think the Sentai Daishikkaku show has found its stride again. Episodes 2-4 kind of fell into a standard "fight against the local big bad guy" thing which I do find enjoyable, but the stakes weren't the same. There were peeks into things happening elsewhere, but due to the abilities on display the plot was focused. It was still very enjoyable in the standard shounen-y way!
Having watched episode 5, I can say that it's really done a great job of re-establishing the things I liked about it begin with. Lots of complicated motivations and factions and some mystery to go with it as well. You can't tell what's going to happen next!
I feel a bit limited on what I can praise about it without spoiling stuff, unfortunately. The visuals are still really good and this studio is definitely continuing to improve on things there.

Well, I thought the culmination of the arc was really good. Some great visuals going on and some new things were revealed raising new questions. The usually muddying of good and evil that make the story more interesting. Maybe I've oversold it, but I think there's maybe 2-3 people that will watch this on kissu and maybe 5000 people on the whole planet so it's worth trying to get more people interested. I'll upload some clips later... maybe.

Maebashi Witches has been the surprise of the season for me and like 90% of it comes from this fat cunt being aggressively toxic at every available opportunity. Almost everything that works about the other characters and situations works because she's there to play off it and escalate minor annoyances into full-blown shouting matches. There is both humor and catharsis in her extreme and immediate judgementalism towards all the vapid and self-serving bullshit pervading the world. Even when she's hypocritically calling out her own flaws in other people her disgust only serves to emphasize how she truly understands the level of how bad it is.

Inuyama was a good place to visit. When on it and on the way up it you get a great sense of how sensible a spot it was to put such a defensive fortification.
I have some photos of it too but mine are all in that stupid HEIC format so I've given up on ever being able to find them.

Japan looks virtually indistinguishable from the rural countryside of my home.
It's more or less the exact same. Sure there's some neat geographical features here and there like the Kofu basin, but overall it is much nicer here. The landscapes aren't really what's exciting, it's really more about a sort of yamatodamashii. Because it does feel different in the Japanese countryside. Here everything is shiny and nice and developed, but Japan is old and rundown, yet well-maintained. It's a very different feeling.
