      I know people love Atlas, but personally Spot feels like the more immediately useful bot. Think of all the lives that could be saved in manual labor jobs by having it going into more dangerous areas first instead of the new hire.

      It seems kind of like it's trying hard to find a purpose and the video didn't help much. It's moving around looking at gauges that would presumably already be digitized and sending signals to computers. It's also looking at things with its camera, but cameras are generally already installed throughout facilities for many reasons.
      But, more importantly, it is COOL!

      It was a nice rainy, relaxing day. This time of day it would normally be dark, but for whatever reason it's brighter than it should be and it's really pretty to look up from my window and only see tree tops instead of ugly houses

      For some reason this spring hasn't had much rain, which is a bad sign, but today there's a nice steady stream of rain clouds. The sounds of rain hitting the ground is just so relaxing.
      Still, nothing compares to being in a windy rain in a forest and also hearing the tree's leaves move around. I've only experienced it once, but I was never more at peace then at that time.
      Youtube is full of "10 hours of rain" stuff, but I don't think any of it would compare to the real thing. Some video games manage to make rain very atmospheric, though, especially if they have music tracks that only play during rain, or sometimes they remove the music so you hear nothing but the rain and it has a strong effect, too.

      Ah, you beat me to it. I saw a thing on this on BBC and it seemed really cool since mountainous terrain can be risky for helicopters and they require a fairly large landing pad. It'll be good for young first responders and such, but I can't imagine doctors in their 60s doing it.

      A couple months ago I had enough of our honeysuckle vine being an unmanageable mess and gave it a severe trim. I removed like 90% of the branches, and after I did so I discovered that I completely forgot it had a trellis, but it outgrew it and put so much weight on it that it bent under its weight. I removed like 80% of the total mass of the plant and I was worried I killed it, but then I was reminded how foolish I was when Spring came and it proved its reputation as invasive plant that you need to keep isolated because it already grew like 8 new tiny branches in a few weeks.
      I kind of wonder why there aren't honeysuckle farms where people use them for tinder or something because it's absurd how fast they grow

      My uncle does that but he butchers and eats them. He tried getting sheep to raise them for wool but I think shearing was too much for him so he ate them as well.

      If I get enough land I'll probably buy Shetland ponies or something like that. That way I can probably breed and sell them for a reasonable amount and not have to eat them or sell them for meat.

      only thing that comes to mind is when the design for space station solar panels that start packed into this folded configuration discovered by this japanese mathematician who was inspired by origami. you need to pull on it from just two ends and the creases would constrain the structure and transmit the force everywhere it needed to go to unpack the entire rectangular panel which was much bigger than the cubey thing it started as

      could the tale of Ozymandias be interpretted as the philosophy of nhilism or would that be reading too much into what the poem is trying to say?

      I met a traveller from an antique land,
      Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
      Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
      Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
      And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
      Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
      Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
      The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
      And on the pedestal, these words appear:
      My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
      Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
      Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
      Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
      The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

      well what you can do if you don't want that is to get water boiling while having the window open and then take the lid off after turning off the stove and closing the window
      you'll have a bunch of steam in there but that's a good thing

      When we lost power in our house (posted elsewhere) we made use of the water heater which used gas instead of electricity. The bathroom was essentially turned into an on-demand sauna by running the shower for a little bit. Pretty nice

      It's fortunate to live in a place with gas isn't it?
      I lived in a place before where the stoves were electric, heaters were electric, and even hot water came from the municipal heating plant that got cold after 15 minutes of shower

      I guess so, but I never really pay much attention to it. I think I'd prefer electric stuff,except for these bad scenarios where the power is out for a sustained period

      Iunno, my water heater is pretty shoddy. Here it is, after a gust of wind turned it off earlier today, I'm about to turn it back on.
      The instructions say you have to hold down the left side of the middle thingy for 20 secs before selecting a heat setting but it often resets anyways and requires multiple tries. The stove isn't in great shape either, though it's not as finicky.
      Do not envy those 15m showers though, that sounds awful. I'm very slow when it comes to those.
