I'm not a historian, but my completely uneducated guess has to do with where people traveled by merchant boats in the past. If you believed there to be nothing eastwards, and lots of land westwards, you're gonna believe you're the east. It took a long time for western europe to travel towards America as well because they generally believed there was nothing there. Naturally they are then, the west.
