This cave looks man made. What was it originally used for?

I had an old mineshaft I used to hang out in as a kid that looked sort of like this. Basically they dug it in the 1920s and every so often when there was a big rain sediment would flow back into it.
So the shaft that was 6ft tall 80 years ago was 2ft tall when I was a kid, and the last time I visited it as an adult it was completely filled.
