It's relatively normal to see people wearing anime t-shirts outside nowadays, even outside of ones with just shounen characters you'll see people with anime girl T-shirts. Although it's the 'aesthetic' that's popular, not necessarily the content itself.

Been wearing anime t-shirts outside for a while. The only issue I ever ran into was some bozo calling Sanae Miku. I forget how I responded, and that is probably for the best.

Seen a guy wear an ahegao camo shirt. It was a really crappy one, you could tell the guy who drew the design wasn't Japanese or a good artist.

I don't care about hiding my powerlevel because everyone can tell I'm weird from my manners either way and anime is such a normal thing now. If someone asks I will answer honestly what I watch and read, but slightly toned down for everyone's comfort. There are several people who know I read eroge for the plot. Never been an issue. I don't take myself so seriously so it's treated more like a fun fact secret that everybody knows.
>>97454 Ahegao is too far, purely because sexual clothes make people uncomfortable.

It's so normalized now that I wouldn't worry about it. It probably brings you closer to people that are around 30 or under since you've inherited the cultural groundwork done by those older. I see it on teenagers and people in their 20s not too rarely when I dare to venture outside, but of course it's popular stuff. The last one I saw was an Attack on Titan shirt on a teenage girl cashier about half a year ago. It's kind of weird because 20 years ago if I saw the equivalent I would think "Oh I watch anime too, I should compliment the shirt and ask what she's watching since she's also a dork" but instead I think "yeah, that's a normal person doing normal stuff I should just keep to myself".
I'd say you could wear whatever you want and still blend in quite well. The times of buying a dorky shirt and keeping it in the closet due for fear of social repercussions is in the past, so live it up. Do try to show at least basic respect to Japan and don't wear the ironic stuff, though.
>>97463 References like this is something I could see myself wearing. Nice.

>>97468 I admit I really, really wanted to buy a hoodie after the rat kids normalized it, but by the time I gathered the courage and money, it went out of fashion and haven't seen any ahegaocamo drip for sale locally since.

>>97449 My head is full of cool(?) designs for shirts and keychains subtly referencing vocaloids, 2hus, some anime, and that'd be the only thing I'd wear that'd hint at my power level. I've yet to even get to make a draft because I have more pressing matters than possibly attract some person who's knowledgeable, sharp, and outgoing enough to call me out. You know how making friends with passersbies you meet in the streets is an implicit social taboo, anyway, so it's flabbergasting that some people wear stuff as if they want to be befriended by the right people, but they would likely get uncomfortable outside of the socializing temenos zones that serve as the theaters of their personas of choice.
My fashion philosophy is you should wear what an anime protagonist could wear. Norms actually complement me on my new clothes.

I'm living in a smaller area where everyone knows each other and "culture" is dictated by either old folk, or the stereotypical european ghetto teen, so anything but mainstream degeneracy wouldn't really fly here. I've never met anime or otaku people IRL just in general, but even if I were to go to a convention and wore something like a Touhou shirt, I'd be too worried about attracting Twitter-type people screaming "BAKA! BAKA!" directly into my ear and turning out to be the kinds of people that I'd rather not associate with. I consider myself very tolerant towards "tourists", non/nu-otaku or what you wanna call them, it's great that they're having fun! It's just that I'd prefer to talk to average Joe anons in a calm and normal way, much like the majority of anons respond to each other here, though I suspect it's specifically our kind that doesn't like to start an interaction.
