hydrus has auto-tagging for stuff already in its database, which applies to booru pics and anything other users have previously uploaded to it
i don't know how it works exactly but it managed to hit a surprising amount of pics when i gave it a try, should cut down on your required time considerably

Maybe that's something AI could actually be useful for, recognizing images that are for all intents and purposes the same but just varying in file detail or whatever.

i only use tagging for booru images and i always save all tags when i save these images
there are some auto taggers that you can use for anime style images not from boorus like https://github.com/neggles/wdv3-timm but that won't recognize artists or new characters
for general images it's not worth tagging since there aren't auto tagging for them, though they can be captioned by one of the many vision language models out there

I use this model when doing AI tagging stuff to test out prompts. It's quite remarkable as it even does a pretty strong job of identifying popular characters. I think it's probably overboard when it comes to how many tags it can produce, however, as I'm not sure how often people specifically want to categorize something like "collarbone".
