I was worried about the new Geass because of that one post about it being not as good, but watching the first ep it was pretty much what I'd want out of Geass (maybe a bit more fanservice would be nice though). It was over the top, full of style, and most importantly fun. That's the one thing that made Geass the masterpiece it was, it was a masterclass in bringing fun to the audience and getting you excited. If this anime can bring back that feeling of hype and not get into the weeds about 'proper writing' this/ironic meta references that then it should be great.

Looking forwards to the rest of this. Also the CG wasn't bad at all.

See, I think the biggest problem with Roze is that it is a Code Geass sequel. If it were its own thing, or even an alt-universe spin-off, I'd enjoy it a lot more, but in the context of the existing series it detracts from what it is a part of. Just having a sequel at all detracts from the perfect ending of the original and the lore explanations about Neo-Britannia being dudes who somehow escaped Lelouch's destruction of the nobility deciding to attack Hokkaido of all places to reestablish themselves and fending off the entire world, including all of the best pilots and scientists on the planet, with a big shield that was always there I guess is a constant, nagging thought because it makes no fucking sense. They're forcing this story into a universe where it should not be able to happen.

>fun. That's the one thing that made Geass the masterpiece it was
Hard disagree with this. CG was a thrill ride, but what makes it a masterpiece is that it goes deeper than just amusing turns and over-the-top action. It is, at its core, a character drama. That's why people say you can't have Code Geass without Lelouch and Suzaku, because they are what Code Geass is. It's not about watching FLEIJA go off, it's about seeing Suzaku in the crater afterwards. It's not about outsmarting Schnitzel, it's about confronting Nunnally. It's about seeing how all these crazy events cause them to develop as people, how their own actions change not only the world but also themselves. Anyone can create spectacles, but it takes good writing to create character-driven, thematically-relevant spectacles.

Roze is just starting, so it might be premature to judge the characters, but they're already knee-deep in action and what they're doing is very straightforward. They're not facing any challenges and auto-win everything they do just because they're that good. Lelouch came up with much better plans to get face-to-face with his targets and he still suffered countless setbacks trying to get there, he didn't teleport to them like she does. The sides in the original were nuanced and almost every character had justification for what they were doing, that one Vampire guy in the Knights of Round was the only one who came close to the cartoon villains populating this and he was a random bit character to pad out the late game roster.

I got the feeling it was a long time past R2's ending so it doesn't really affect it.

 No.129384

Yeah, I have to agree with OP. It was fun.
My assumption is that they won't use much of the previous story since it's been quite a while, but maybe I'm wrong. It's a strange position to be in so I assume anything will be a remake like Spice and Wolf or a loose sequel that doesn't require much knowledge of the original. There's going to be people watching that weren't alive back then...

You're right. The characters were the focal point for my enjoyment of Geass in the first place. Without Lelouche's revenge and struggles throughout as he accomplishes it I don't think I'd care as much. The first thing Rose does here is kill off some comically evil Brittanians and it doesn't seem as though the impact is that rough on her at all. While in the original Geass, Lelouche does have an initial gut response to killing his brother. You mention the no-difficulty too and you're right. It feels like she has the Shinkiro from the start with how invincible the mech was while Lelouche was making his plans work with ragtag supplies at the start. I wouldn't have liked Code Geass as much if it were full of a bunch of cardboard cutouts, so they certainly do need to make sure they up their game going forwards.

Think I was just going in with extremely low expectations and came out finding that it does still have the style of Geass that I liked. But it certainly needs to do more to prove its worth as a successor to the original. Still seems like it'll be a crowd pleaser regardless of whether it's amazing like the original or not so I'll probably vote for it in the stream.

>>129382
It does miff me a bit because the opening somewhat makes it seem like the peace's undoing was shortly after Zero Requiem, but that annoyance I already dealt with in Resurrection so I wasn't as pissed as I was there.

 No.129386

But at the same time you could say that the original Brittanians in R1 (and the beginning of R2) were also comically evil and the complexity only really started to ramp up come episode 3 or so. Although there was Suzaku from the start and I don't really see any character representing another side for Rose anywhere. Her motivation and goals seem to be entirely justified and in the right too since we don't have that counterbalance.

Yeah the more I think about it, the timeskip being so small is just retarded. Forget ruining the perfect ending of R2, what happened with all of the characters that were in place at the end of Geass? How did Suzaku and Kallen let the Neo-Brittanians take over and why aren't they doing anything about it with the current Black Knights? How come Rose is completely on her own to get back at them? I get you want to separate yourself from the original and treat this as some sort of new thing but it didn't have to be so soon after the original that thinking about it fucks with your head. Lelouche and CC are fucking immortal so having him pass on the torch to Rose would have been possible at any time in the future, and why is he so calm with his plans completely failing? Where's Nunnaly?

God this is so retarded.

It really feels like they wrote it at a self-contained, alt-universe spin-off and then someone decided they needed to hedge their bets by throwing in a bunch of cameos so the whole thing got plopped into the main timeline. Maybe it worked from a marketing perspective, but it really tanks the show itself. Forget Nunnally, Kaguya is also one of the world leaders and she's not sending Kalen in to save her relative from nuke-wielding psychopaths?

Ehh, it's fun. Will it be as good as the original? No, of course not. But, I think the whole "I'm 20 years older now" thing makes it harder to enjoy sequels this far along. Maybe they'll do something crazy with the story in a way that satisfies old fans, but probably not. The first couple minutes of episode 4 makes me wonder where they're going with it.

 No.131367

>>131364
The first ten minutes of episode 4 combined with all the other cameos that came were actually what set me off on this rant here >>131250
Because it's not just about the series being 20 years old and trying to build off of that, but it's the complete lack of regard for everything accomplished in the original series and all the characters from it that should be at the forefront of the new resistance. Or even better, who should have stopped it in the first place.

 No.131368

should have had a 10 minute intro where it showed all the original series characters being killed

 No.131369

>>131368
At least that would've taken balls. A well executed coup scene could retain respectfulness towards the conclusion of the original while inducing fervor towards the new resistance. It would've eliminated the necessity of running an Olympics in your head to work out how the setting works/exists. Instead the writers half-assed it and wanted to both have their cake and eat it. They want people to point and go "WOAH I REMEMBER THEM" to characters from the original they know people love and ride that nostalgia cash train, but at the same time want people to be invested in the new merch and cast they put forth.

We need more dumb execs that will force the writers to kill off the old line of merch for the new one because that's what they want to sell and talented writers who love the characters that will give them an appropriate sendoff.

 No.131610

Watching the latest episode in the stream I really couldn't stop thinking about how lacking this anime is in the soundtrack department compared to its predecessor. It's fine and all, probably good too. But when you're following up one of the greatest OSTs of all time it's really noticeable when there's not a single theme I've heard yet that I'd be able to recognize. Not to mention a real lack of style compared to everything in Geass proper, with of course '0' being the symbolization of the flair, the explosiveness, being bold and in your face, and of course you can easily associate the type of scene it's accompanied with.

Even outside of that though, the more regular battle music still had character to it. This is probably the most "normal" battle theme from it, that I had to really dig for, and it's still better than anything I've heard yet from this new season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su4cpYHoK1g. I'm not going to try and critique it for the OST it chooses for when music really matters, but at the same time with the precedent set I sincerely doubt anything like 'Innocent Days' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3xsqTgxpB0) will materialize. Especially since Hitomi Kuroishi isn't accredited for the newest Geass. Seriously, she added so much to the OST https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azSjz9xdv6Y and the four breaths that'd signal most fun SoL scenes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiOtEa8Qy_0.

And talk about absolute mastery over an already amazing soundtrack. Geass knew exactly what to play and when. Never was there a single moment which gave off the impression of filling space to fill space or just slapping a theme over a somewhat relevant scene. The music and animation always meshed together in beautiful synchronization to make the most out of each possible scene. Like in this scene where Mao dies the cuts on CC match up perfectly.

I'm still confused as to how Sakuya ever thought that Ash killed her father... How did that information even get passed down to her when the only time it seems like it was ever said was when he was blaming himself at the orphanage. Was Sakuya there at that time to hear him say that or something....

Would Ash even care that she used Geass on him if she were to confess? Why is this even a plot point...

They showed a flashback where he just casually mentions that he killed the guy to his "brother". And I guess she just accepted that without asking for any details whatsoever because it made for good dramatic tension.

I think the issue is more that she's been impersonating his dead brother, sort of, but he definitely won't care because this entire episode was done to ensure their romance can continue without obstacles.

Oh is that why it exists? Anime stuff funded by gacha are usually passion projects, though, since the profits can't compare. A JPEG could make more money than every BD sale combined.
Huh, that's weird. But yeah, this is really stupid. I do want to see where it goes, but it's not like I'm invested in the characterse or world. More of a "so bad it's good" kind of thing.

>Anime stuff funded by gacha are usually passion projects
What on earth gave you that idea? Gacha are soulless cashgrabs in every respect, nobody is passionate enough about them to make a full anime about it. In fact, the best gacha anime are the ones that take advantage of the fact that nobody cares about the anime as anything except a way to get the name in people's heads to make an original story that has next to nothing to do with the gacha.

That said, there is no reason to think Roze exists to sell the gacha. It's likely just part of their CG revival plan since no successful IP can go unbeaten these days.

>What on earth gave you that idea?
I thought I gave my reasoning there...
If you have a successful enough gacha there's no reason to do anything else with the IP because nothing else will compare to gacha's free money. The only reason to make an anime or video game from a gacha is basically for fun. X amount of money spent on the anime adaptation would be more productive being spent on the gacha by uhh... I don't know, hiring some new artists or running a new ad campaign on tiktok or whatever.
I'm not sure how animation studios think about gacha adaptations. Work is work, I guess. Yostar Pictures mostly did gacha adaptations but they seem to moving up in the world with Sentai Daishikkaku and assistance credits on stuff like Dungeon Meshi.

 No.132683

>nothing else will compare to gacha's free money
True, but you have to factor in how much an anime will increase the eyes on your gacha and get them hooked on it. It's not like the anime can't possibly bring in more money for the companies.
