Make a post that's on-topic - You have to sage it
Make an irrelevant post - You must bump with it
Which would you pick?

The post was made for thread, and not thread for the post. Replies might lead to tangents that are adjacent at best, sure, but in the vacuum irrelevant post is nothing more than a spam.

>>7087Threads aren't generals. They don't have to stay on topic at all.

>>7088Making a new thread is free. Also, general has quality of being recurring, which actually alleviates problems if significant parts of the thread are off-topic. A proper thread, one-time idea, isn't so lucky in comparison.
Besides, it's the generals that tend to stray into off-topic more, since they burn through the subject sooner or later and personalities of regulars start to seep in over time.

I am the legendary off-topic sager.

I'd sage while being on-topic if I had to quickly clarify something I said. I'd bump while being off-topic if I wanted to diffuse tension while drawing attention to the thread. Maybe? I still don't understand it.
