I was thinking it'd probably be a good idea to have a thread for asking questions about video editing since they're generally one of the more tough ones to make. My own experience is limited to making a bit of funposts here and there of varying degrees of competency so I'm not really an expert myself, but I could help with stuff I know. For other things, I think I've seen people posting video edits before so hopefully they'd be more knowledgeable.

Nice coincidence that this thread just showed up after I spent a good half-hour bashing my head against MKVToolNix, Handbrake and Audacity. >>>/jp/93104

Uh, dang yeah I'd just use Resolve for that and it'd be way easier.

I've used Kdenlive the one or two times I've made a video for Kissu

Is there ever a reason to use anything besides Resolve aside from maybe ffmpeg for quick conversions?

Not OP, just bumping in case anyone's active in the craft and wants to share projects, thoughts, or interesting findings. Perhaps to keep morale up.

I used to experiment a lot with Vegas and AE a very long time ago, but haven't really touched anything in over 10 years and forgot the vast majority of things that go beyond a "basic" workflow. I think I might want to try to get into it again!

One thing that I hope will motivate any potentially interested anons is that I believe it should be much easier now to figure out how to achieve certain effects, rather than having to build up general software knowledge first in order to come up with ideas on how to combine features to get the result you want, and that's by asking AI. At the very least it should point you in the right direction or provide you with alternative methods that might come in handy for you in the future. The same of course goes for image- and audio-editing as well.

An oddly specific example would be the "can't be alive without you" text in the Marisa flash "stretching" into view - I forgot exactly which effect it was, but I found out back then that it's very easily achievable within AE, which in turn lead me to the revelation that a lot of high-effort PVs, whether it be doujinshi or studio productions, just use a multitude of instant-access Adobe features, or specific software that is based on those same features. This may sound obvious in hindsight, but tutorials and video courses used to primarily focus on the typical western production style and you just had to figure out on your own how to simulate colorful poppy eroge-style visuals. It doesn't make the process itself easier, but I think it's a good motivational boost when you notice how "simple" even the more elaborate visuals are under the hood.

Are you using the legit free version? How is your experience with it? I'm currently using Shotcut and it can feel frustratingly janky at times.

Yeah, I'm using the free version. I haven't had any problems with it aside from version 20 requiring a lot of vram.
