This wasn't a fun scene to watch!

It reminded me of my own long list of green murders i've committed over the years...
The first couple of plants died because i was mostly just forgetting to water them regularly.
After that i tried to do better for the next couple of plants only to end up watering them too much instead!
Then i tried to get pretty careful about not watering too much, or to little, but they still died!
The last one i got, as a gift from a relative last year, i'm not even entirely sure why it died... it did perfectly fine for the entire summer but then it just... slowly died off anyway!
After some asking around it seems liked the roots started rotting away and then it just died from lack of nutrients and inability of taking up water but... how...
Taking care of plants is too hard...

It's not too hard, but it is harder than most people realize. If you had root rot it could have been for various reasons such as soil compaction, over-watering, under-watering or even parasites down there in the soil. Once it's gone a period of time without moisture, soil can become hydrophobic and actually repel water which makes for some less than ideal conditions in regards to roots finding moisture and nutrition.
You should lightly fertilize it a few times a year and repot it every other year or so depending on species, too.
Lots of "beginner" plants are very durable, though, as they're the ones that survive long enough to make it to someone's house. I think like 40% of new houseplants die early on once they arrive at a home, too.

Oh... those things might be something worth remembering if i end up getting a new plant this summer then. But i'm not making any promises on how well it'll go, because there is a lot to remember and i still think i'm lacking some general intuition on how to take care of plants!
