How did the artist of this know what a nose was? This is breaking my suspension of disbelief.

Anime noses actually follow the structure of proper noses and are serving as highlights of at least a single corner, depending on the style.

That's a bit of a stretch...

Noses are disgusting and I'm glad anime has almost completely got rid of them.

Noses are only needed on males to smell stinky feet (Kanako)

Ehh I don't think noses themselves can be cute or attractive on their own, but they work as uhhh... framing or characterization or something for the rest of the face.
I think there's a bit of an inescapable hole now as 2D girls have become normalized without noses. Now when people see one it stands out instead of just being a natural part of the face. It's like a design decision now, something that makes you think "Hmm I wonder why they chose to have noses..."
I think Sakomoto Days was the last thing I watched with distinctive noses, although they were still just kind of weird shadow things.

perhaps in the full body cyborg future noses can be real...

There are countless ways of drawing the same nose differently.
The vast majority of good looking anime styles follow some structure when the "weird" minimal dots and lines for noses are drawn. When a non-Japanese artist tries to emulate anime style but is failing on this, this is what you pick up on intiuitively.
Pic related are "traces" of features of the same nose except for the side view. Don't mind the side views being inconsistent, they're there just for angle reference.

It's all the same Michelangelo's David, by the way.

Yeah, that's the problem I was talking about. People think you can't have a good style if you draw noses? It's indeed a technique or "skill" of sorts to hint at the existence of a nose to show that the character is indeed human, without actually giving the character a nose.
I see it as a social trend that everyone must adhere to, a strong creative limitation that limits creative freedom. I see it as unfortunate.

"Minimalistic" noses give a delicate impression, so it's a trend & taste thing. I think an anime style is skillful as long as the nose is not making the face seem rougher, unless that's the intention.
