I had something like this happen to me a decade ago. It would always hit just as I'm falling asleep, hypnogogic hallucinations I believe they're called. For me it was a temporary crippling panic disorder that triggered it, but I got better after a few weeks or months. I don't remember, I suppressed most of it because it was trauma related.
Only thing that worked for me was stay up so long I would fall asleep regardless due to exhaustion.

I don't think I've ever had this specific issue of threatening hallucinations, but I've had neutral ones. It happens when my sleeping has been strange, and my theory is that it's caused by part of the brain successfully falling asleep and dreaming while the rest of you is still conscious.
I don't have any suggestions on how to fix it, but it might help to listen to something to distract you. Maybe music, but also something like youtube with someone with a monotonous voice.
