What throws me off is that if you go by generation, they are still pretty new, but modern console generations go on so long that last-gen tech is all from 20+ years ago.

I believe it's been considered retro for a few years now at least. In my mind I can accept it, but subconsciously I think GBA is the cutoff for handhelds.

The distinction between gameplay stopped in the gamecube ps2 era. After this point most games are the same because the hardware was good enough to express all concepts. Motion control consoles such as the wii are the only ones that you could have to express the argument that ps2 is retro

The DS doesn't work when the power goes out because its kuso rechargeable battery loses charge while sitting in the closet for years, but the fat GBA with its AA batteries still works and is useful. I'd set that as the cutoff point for retro.

Just use a batterypack. I think the fact that the DS has touch is not very retro, but the games are also old now and most have a very distinctive old style so it's still retro to me.

This is incorrect. My DS was powered by satan and recharged when I closed the lid and let it sit. The red light would flash and I would simply close it and leave it on the floor for a few hours and come back to it powering back on with no issue and stay powered for several hours after.

Also, I don't think consoles that contain updated ports of retro games can themselves be considered retro, so neither the DS nor the GBA are retro.
