I have this compulsive need to look at the front pages social media websites while logged out so I can seek out videos with high viewcounts and accounts with high subscriber counts. The goal is to figure out what popular opinion is, because I feel completely and utterly out of touch otherwise.

I understand that this behavior is supposedly bad, and I definitely feel miserable doing it, but it just feels so instinctively wrong not to do it, like I'm ignoring a problem that needs to be solved.

How do I stop being like this?

 No.3408

I don't know if it is bad. I don't do this and I am completely out of touch. I don't feel like I have anything to lose by being out of touch though, I am already a hikikomori either way.
Maybe your situation is different, it is useful to know how the people around you are likely to think and feel if you need to navigate the world of socialization.

Isn't that time you could be looking at Ran pics? Seems like a disruption of priorities.
But, I can't really relate. I intentionally avoid social media, only glancing at it briefly if someone links it and my eye wanders for a bit. I always feel worse afterwards. I guess you could remember that what you see on social media isn't necessarily the group consensus, but rather an algorithm trying to game your attention to get you to spend more time on it.

What gets me is when I see videos with insane viewcounts. Like, today, I saw a video with 262 million views! To put it into reference, that's over twice the population of Japan. It has to count for something, but I have no idea what.

I'm pretty sure a large part of it is bots trying to manipulate the algorithm to indicate if you like those popular videos you will like another video.

But that's the thing, it could be 90% bots and 10% people from across the world, but it could also be 90% people from English speaking countries and 10% bots, or even 30% everyone in France with an internet connection, 15% every child in Mongolia, 20% people from the Midwest, 11% bots, and 14% Chinese military veterans. I don't know what to make of it, but it seems important enough that I can't bring myself to ignore it.

What is there to be gained by staying in touch with the n*rps? Just focus on doing the things you enjoy. Watch more anime, read more manga, play more games, post more with your puter frens, fap to more 2hus.

I don't watch anything with a clickbaity thumbnail and title on principle, but I occasionally check youtube front page for what the norms are on about that day, it's like bird watching. Like "oh that new ass creed game and ubisoft is having a bad time, or there's some sort of baldur's gate and hasbro drama, and would you look at that people are still making several hour long skyrim analysis videos".
If it's actually important then I'll look into it and if you guy's are talking about it I'll throw in my 2 cents, but otherwise it's the same type of drama as last year and the year before that. You aren't missing much.

Yeah, there's better things he could be doing with that time.

I at the very least know what Cocomelon's deal is, since people who aren't me are aware of its popularity and thus talk about it. What gets me is when I see these videos/accounts with insane view/sub counts that I don't see anyone talking about, and if I do, it's in a dumb internet capacity that doesn't actually tell me anything.

>it just feels so instinctively wrong not to do it, like I'm ignoring a problem that needs to be solved.
Because it is our instincts. We are evolved to live in a tribe of few hundreds people max. In such an environment it is important to care what's going on since it might actually be a problem that needs to be solved. Such instincts are maladaptive for the modern world. When we follow internet drama and news we are no longer caring about our tribe or things that affect us. We are expending emotional energy on pointless things, grow out of touch with our immediate surroundings and it also changes our personalities to be more emotionally reactive and attention seeking. Just not good for mental wellness. It also doesn't help that almost everybody in popular online content are dumb as rocks and immature. Voicing out a sensible opinion there will only gets you attacked or ignored.

I only check them when logged in because that's the only time it's tolerable
