>>16414311 episodes today, and next week we have 11 epiosdes left of the official season, but someone suggested also streaming the specials of which there are 2, so 13 episodes next week. They fit right into the ending so I can't really skip them.

I think I already watched these episodes too, now that I think about it, just didn't realize they were specials and treated them as part of the whole.

It's a great show, and I can see why it's a cult classic. It's got a lot of neat subplots running throughout, many decent characters with a couple standouts, and a lot of buildup to a unique endgame with the villagers competently managing to root out the vamp menace. But I think that, inversely, these things hold it back from being a true classic. There's too much needless buildup, too many okay characters, which makes it so you end up with a cour and a half of humies getting totally stomped and sniped off one by one until it suddenly flips and it's the vamps getting destroyed. I don't think that's a good way to construct a story. The end product is enjoyable because there's a lot of events to keep you hooked, but these are largely not very relevant, the only key thread is doc's glacial investigation and his masterstroke at the Kagura ceremony.
In that sense, Shiki is rather episodic. It does not dedicate itself to a single continuous narrative, it instead shifts into many simpler little plots that it individually doesn't delve much into but still helps populate the village with an acceptable level of detail. I just don't think that manages to justify its length. Think about it like this: it takes less time for Madoka to run in its entirety than it does for Shiki to reach the key scene with doc torturing his wife, to me that's a damning comparison. It doesn't help that the arc structure is more like a binary waveform, for most of the series the humies are powerless to struggle against the vamps, then in two days they kill 99% of them, and this only really happens because the vamps are too retarded to take one of their myriad opportunities to kill off doc. This flaw of theirs is brought up multiple times, and for a group so well-organized, competent, and careful this utter failure can only be described as a contrivance, sadly.
>>164648>The heartlessness that overcomes some of the villagers in the face of former neighbors, whether as a coping mechanism or an expression of a dark deep-seeded nature. This is not something you commonly see depicted and I would've enjoyed doing more with it, but it's sped through and the depiction ends up being somewhat superficial. They killed a couple extra people then easily moved on.
Oh yeah also posting this classic.

>>164651>They killed a couple extra people then easily moved on.It was just one person, but symbolically the "kusojiji" girl was the rage of the village burning out of control and destroying it in the process.
