SO,
HALLOWEEN is coming up THIS VERY MONTH, usually to commemorate the occasion I'd do a whole day stream of stuff on the day that people can appreciate the spook at any time, but this year I may switch things up a bit if people want to because a consecutive 24 eps can end up being a bit much. I'll be streaming the first 12 the Sunday before Halloween, probably starting at 6pm EST unless there's a better time that works for people and then ending with the latter half on Halloween at the same time I start Sunday.

So what's Shiki about? Shiki's a vampire story that I feel delves quite well into the moral quandries of empathy/sympathy, and does so in quite a brutal manner. It's been a bit over a decade or so since I watched it, so there's a good deal I can't remember in specific, but it's held a near high spot in my list for a reason, that I know. It's got plenty of extremely memorable scenes and characters that altogether make an experience you don't want to miss out on. Be there or be ghoul food!

There's doing the right thing, and then there's going overboard. The one guy definitely was just getting a kick out of killing them, even going so far as to openly state how he'd always hated and wanted to kill one of the returned, even before he'd returned. Caught up in the slaughter they even killed those not returned for unreasonable suspicion, and also most likely a thirst for violence given it was the same person gloating about their ability to kill who kicked off the "infection" talk. That's why the episode is titled "Slaughter and Malice", because despite the goal of exterminating the vamps is a noble one, it's taken and abused by those with far from clean intentions. At the end the right thing was done by the one villager who went around to end the suffering of the vamps burning in the sun because despite everything, they still have conscious and pain.

It's a great show, and I can see why it's a cult classic. It's got a lot of neat subplots running throughout, many decent characters with a couple standouts, and a lot of buildup to a unique endgame with the villagers competently managing to root out the vamp menace. But I think that, inversely, these things hold it back from being a true classic. There's too much needless buildup, too many okay characters, which makes it so you end up with a cour and a half of humies getting totally stomped and sniped off one by one until it suddenly flips and it's the vamps getting destroyed. I don't think that's a good way to construct a story. The end product is enjoyable because there's a lot of events to keep you hooked, but these are largely not very relevant, the only key thread is doc's glacial investigation and his masterstroke at the Kagura ceremony.

In that sense, Shiki is rather episodic. It does not dedicate itself to a single continuous narrative, it instead shifts into many simpler little plots that it individually doesn't delve much into but still helps populate the village with an acceptable level of detail. I just don't think that manages to justify its length. Think about it like this: it takes less time for Madoka to run in its entirety than it does for Shiki to reach the key scene with doc torturing his wife, to me that's a damning comparison. It doesn't help that the arc structure is more like a binary waveform, for most of the series the humies are powerless to struggle against the vamps, then in two days they kill 99% of them, and this only really happens because the vamps are too retarded to take one of their myriad opportunities to kill off doc. This flaw of theirs is brought up multiple times, and for a group so well-organized, competent, and careful this utter failure can only be described as a contrivance, sadly.

>>164648
>The heartlessness that overcomes some of the villagers in the face of former neighbors, whether as a coping mechanism or an expression of a dark deep-seeded nature.
This is not something you commonly see depicted and I would've enjoyed doing more with it, but it's sped through and the depiction ends up being somewhat superficial. They killed a couple extra people then easily moved on.

Oh yeah also posting this classic.

>They killed a couple extra people then easily moved on.
It was just one person, but symbolically the "kusojiji" girl was the rage of the village burning out of control and destroying it in the process.

She was raging at the vamps' impact, though. It's not the same as the dark impulses of 20.5, which is what I was referring to.
