Are there any games that can properly depict war in its extremely stressful and horrific light? Or will we only really be able to to get that sort of experience made eventually through VR? I feel like, thinking about the potential of AI, this could be one of the few genres that AI would be almost necessary to properly make a less gamey more overbearing experience.

Do you mean like Spec Ops horrific or like this video horrific?

I think a mix of both really is what's ideal. Since the mundane would lull people into a false sense of security while you have outer workings in algorithms that plot out the movements of enemies that will randomly assault the base in non-scripted ways to keep players on their toes at all times.

The AI part I think would be necessary is so that you can have an ever changing story that can allow for any character to die so there's no stable peg for people to tie themselves to and feel some sense of true safety.

There ARE games that vets with PTSD play to help in a therapeutic sense, I am not sure if that is something you are interested in though. I think we won't truly experience a real war experience unless we've been through it ourselves.

there are no games which actually cause phsyical harm because they would be illegal to sell.

Well you wouldn't be physically harmed by it of course, that's only when you want to make the best MMO ever and give people a good reason to try their best in it.

the threat of psychical harm, and hearing damage and such, is what causes mental disorders. You can't have the threat without some sort of real consequence

 No.135650

yeah i think it's categorically impossible for that to be achieved without actual people actually dying
spec ops in particular fails because it forces you to do stuff and then blames you for it, denying the player the possibility of agency but making them responsible anyways is pretty much the worst way to go about it
but any game that grants players the ability to do as they please can easily turn into a meatgrinder for fun
i hear this war of mine does better by putting you in the receiving end of things but looking at negative reviews it seems to still fall short

Sometimes I wondered what the potential for future VR would be like. The fantasy of "full-dive" VR would open up so much, including horrific violence by making those gladiator games feel real, and naturally people would use it to simulate sex.
The only issue is that such technology will also be used to make Torment Nexuses.

There’s a metajoke here because Vietnam was actually the exception when it comes to the joke about soldiers actually sitting around doing nothing all day. In Vietnam the average GI would spend around 2 out of every 3 days on combat patrol and this is if you count a day as a full 24 hours spent on patrol.

Yeah, I was more sort of thinking about the idea while listening to a record about New Guinea Campaign in WW2.

1. Walker is not the player, his actions are no more your responsibility than the actions of a character in a book are your fault for turning the pages.
2. It's just a video game, bro, don't take it so seriously.
3. If you disagree with the above two points, you are a psychopath who started and continued the game so that you, the real you, could enjoy killing people.
The game explicitly gives you the opportunity to refute all of its criticisms at the end and you're mad because you decided it was right about everything.

Also, soldiers don't get to disobey orders and there are times when you have to do horrific things to survive, don't sign up for the army thinking soldiers are superheroes. You've missed the point of the game on multiple levels.

Thinking a bit more there are stories that elicit feelings of dread and feet. Cousins that make you feel sick for reading them. With that in mind it's possible to make the reader question their mental wellness. But it's far from causing the same outcomes
