But I need a break from will they wont they school romance. I would kill for a good show about an already married couple, speaking of that, how are Shin-Chan's parents not divorced yet?

TEMPLE could've been the hit of the season if it wasn't a harem show.

At a glance:
>Shiro Seijo to Kuro Bokushi
Literal saint who's secretly kind of a slob is in love with a dense pastor, by Doga Kobo. Though it's a romcom and I doubt religion will be relevant, not sure, but maybe others will like it.
>Dark Gathering
CRAAAAAAAAAAWLING IIIIIIN MYYY CRAAWWWWWWL, bloody ghost hunting with skull-eyed loli.
>Helck
Gentle Beowulf becomes demon lord through a tournament, after apparently killing his brother who had defeated the previous maou. Heavenly queen demoness doesn't trust him one bit. Looks to have both comedy and srs, heard this one was really good. I've read a very vague spoiler that has me interested.
>Undead Girl Murder Farce
Talking head of a girl, her maid, and adult Demifiend travel across 19th century Europe looking for her missing body. Comes from an actual novel, looks pretty cool.

Wary of imas being 3D, but it'll probably still be good.
Stray Dogs is adapting a good part and the anime has consistently elevated the source material.
Spy grew on me in the first season.
Lots of trashy isekai that I will not watch. The vending machine shitpost is tempting but I'm not going to fall for the wacky premise trap again.
Surprising amount of battle harems that I will likely drop but probably one will be better than it lets on.
Same with the romances.
I love megane, but I don't want to go blind so I'll stay away from the two GoHands anime.
Murder Face, Liar2, and AI are what I have the most hope for.

Alright, I haven't looked at any replies so I'm not infleunced by anything.
Here are shows that seem potentially interesting to me, in no particular order:

Things definitely to try:

Kenshin (might be good)
https://anilist.co/anime/142877/Rurouni-Kenshin-Meiji-Kenkaku-Romantan-2023/

Uchi no Kaisha no Chiisai Senpai no Hanashi (could be cute, seems very similar to a the one with the green-haired girl)

Eiyuu-Kyoushitsu (simple, but it could be enjoyable)

Mushoku Tensei (enough said)
https://anilist.co/anime/146065/Mushoku-Tensei-II-Isekai-Ittara-Honki-Dasu/

Shiro Seijo to Kuro Bokushi (seems cute and relaxing)

Hyakushou Kizoku (if it gets subs)
https://anilist.co/anime/155971/Hyakushou-Kizoku/

AI no Idenshi (the serious show of the season for me?)
https://anilist.co/anime/158530/AI-no-Idenshi/

Temple (second ever show for the studio that just did One-Hit Kill Neesan)
https://anilist.co/anime/160447/Temple/

Helck (almost looks like she's pouting)
https://anilist.co/anime/145140/Helck/

Level 1 dakedo Unique Skill de Saikyou desu (the girls are cute, might be a nice relaxing show?)
https://anilist.co/anime/148465/Level-1-dakedo-Unique-Skill-de-Saikyou-desu/

Genjitsu no Yohane: SUNSHINE in the MIRROR (I'm not a huge fan of Love Live, but if this is more fantasy focus then I'll try it)
https://anilist.co/anime/151513/Genjitsu-no-Yohane-SUNSHINE-in-the-MIRROR/

Atelier Ryza (I do love the Atelier games, although I haven't played Ryza's games yet)
https://anilist.co/anime/162893/Ryza-no-Atelier-Tokoyami-no-Joou-to-Himitsu-no-Kakurega/

File:[SubsPlease] LasTame - 01 ….jpg (293.44 KB,1920x1080)

Hmmm... LasTame (Higeki no Genkyou to Naru Saikyou Gedou Last Boss Joou wa Tami no Tame ni Tsukushimasu) is off to a bit of a slow start. It's another story about a girl isekai'd into an otome game as a villainess, although this one has flashbacks of the evil she did and damn the character was pretty evil like forcing a little boy to murder his mom. People are born with abilities like precognition or teleportation, so that part could be interesting.
Basically, it's like others of the genre with the "Oh, this character did an evil thing here, so let's prevent the story path that leads to my death", but it seems more like she wants the good thing to happen because it's the right thing to do and not because she wants to avoid her final boss fate. The humor really isn't here at all, so it's all quite serious.
I'm interested, but these shows fall off a cliff when the characters age up and everything is centered on politics and relationship cliches.
With how I've seen seasonal streams vote, I find it unlikely that we'll add this one to the lineup. I'll watch it on my own for a few episodes at least.

Yeah, just finished it. Lots of walking and talking, like a Monogatari show but without the elaborate visuals to go with it. The choreography in that very short fight was pretty cool, but it only lasted about 20 seconds.
As for the rest of the episode there was lots of 3D, lots of stationary shots, lots of panning, and even some rotation. This isn't the stuff you want to see in a first episode of all things.
The story could be interesting and I liked some of the scenes, but they were heavily constrained by limited animation. Some parts of it like pic related are a sad tease of what it could have been like with a budget. Oh well.
Sadly, I won't be watching it

File:[Setsugen] Genjitsu no Yoh….jpg (406.14 KB,1920x1080)

Idolmaster really does spoil you, animation-wise, when you then watch a Love Live show. I will say that 3D is getting more and more impressive, as I can only notice it switch when I look for the signs.
I think they're trying to make it seem a bit video game-y as the talking dog's mouth purposely doesn't line up with its speech and it also looks a bit too 3D at times. This 'Sunshine in the Mirror" show is getting a Metroidvania game so it makes sense.
Seems like a decent SoL, although it was a very uneventful and boring introduction. The song was nice.

>as I can only notice it switch when I look for the signs
And if you didn't know what I mean, that screenshot in the post I'm replying to is 3D. You can easily tell with her blocky hands and the perfect geometric pattern of the bricks, and the dog's mouth and the general flat coloring on the characters overall.
There's still some nice 2D stuff in the show, but it's clearly a hybrid. People liked Onimai a lot and it did the same thing

 No.110808

kinda wild, but the main thing that I'll be looking forward to(still have 10 more items to get aired) is Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon because it's all about terrible it is to live in feudalistic societies, a lot of terrible characters, nice guy who'd probably stained in PTSD and a girl who's equally battered by Japan's views on step-daughters and inherited children.

The AI one is well done. I think it's notable. Something like that can go either way as an episodic show.

Just finished episode 2, which didn't have a song. The second episode was an improvement, with more humor and funny reactions and signs of a story happening. I still feel like something is lacking, though, but I have trouble putting it into words.
I guess my 2 episode opinion is that it's a shoe-in for Love Live fans, but taken as a cute girl medieval fantasy/SoL show it's not particularly amazing. I'm not generally a fan of idol shows, though, so maybe this is something that really speaks to idol fans but not to me. Episode 2 ended with an epilogue showing some bad stuff of a magical nature happening, so it seems like this could become interesting with an adventuring storyline if that does materialize.
Ehhhhhh... I want to like it, but I just feel like it's not there. If you're going to try the show, though, give it two episodes or just watch the second one because it's better than the first.

Hmm, Temple...
It's labeled as ecchi and it's definitely there for a couple seconds now and then, but it mostly seems to be a romcom harem type of thing. I'm not sure how to feel about this one. The animation/visuals are quite diffeernt with lots of exaggerated faces and it looks silly, but I like it. This will surely be like the studio's previous show Neesan and will be a fight between budget and passion, but Neesan pulled it off with flying colors.
I can't really make a decision after the first episode, especially with it being an introduction to the real premise that starts at almost literally the last minute of the episode. I'll keep watching it for now.

The Little Senpai show is kinda cute at times, but it feels quite generic. Another show with too much 3D, too. They really shouldn't have the guy point out her cute little hands and then use 3D for them.

Vending Machine's first episode was pretty good, but it was carried (heh) but the girl and I think that will be true for the show itself. It will depend if the other characters are fun and interesting enough to make use of the main character who is essentially just a prop.
...or they could throw the premise out the window and he becomes human or cyborg or he can project his soul into a doll or something like that, which is quite possible since these stories love to throw their gimmick away and make it a regular show.
Good first episode, questionable future episodes.

Funnily enough I started reading Suki na Ko ga Megane wo Wasureta two days ago without knowing there was an adaptation airing this season. Weird coincidences aside I'm not sure how I feel about this first episode: while I like the character designs, the animation really doesn't fit a rom-com like this at all. It's full of strange camera angles, CG, and unnecessary hair movement. It's distracting and almost vertigo-inducing. The scenes with students walking on the hallways look super janky as well. Just look at one of the previews: https://youtu.be/45lyCUdzRx4
I'll happily stick to the manga if the animation is this obnoxious all the time.

That's always what studio GoHands productions look like. I wouldn't expect any change in the style, the CGI with crazy camera angles is their schtick.

Normally they do more action-oriented shows where it makes for some cool fight scenes. Weird that they'd pick up a rom-com, it doesn't seem to suit their style at all.

Ai no Idenshi is pretty good, although I wonder where the story will go. I wonder if it will be tackling a different robotics ethical quandary in every episode, or if it will shift to a focus on one main plot which was hinted at. Probably both? A "black market" doctor for robots is such a cool story that you'd really need to blow it to make me drop it. It's a good show, but I don't really have the motivation to write paragraphs about why.

Hyakushou Kizoku is a decent enough. It's a auto-biographical/educational short from the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist amd Gin no Saji about her life as a dairy farmer. The first episode was talking about milk, predictably enough.

As that video mentions, making humans look good in CGI is difficult, and surely realistic humans even more so. Yet that is what has historically been the bread-and-butter of anime, with comparatively little of the 'stretchiness' and highly caricatured character-designs common in Western animation, which makes it much harder to transition over to 3D animation without the flaws sticking out like a sore thumb. Probably not a coincidence that it is series like Beastars, which lack ordinary humans, that are held up as exemplars of full-CGI anime.

The contrast of tones between the beginning, middle, and end was really nice. It was kinda of obvious where the show was going once the spy plot line showed up but the transition didn't feel too forced or out of left field, once the full switch to serious happened.

I have yet to try out Helck, but I just watched Zom-100 Bucket List of the Dead and it's most certainly one of the early contenders for AOTS. The production and direction in the first episode were near movie quality. Aside from that the premise breaks from the norm of zombie movies, where it's a downtrodden apocalypse, and instead has the end of the world portrayed as a joyous event for the MC since it finally frees him of his hellish corpo job. I doubt it'll have any more critiques of that structure of society anymore given the setting going forwards, but I thought they did an excellent job really conveying how awful life was leading up to the outbreak.

Although, I will say I have no idea how this anime will go moving forwards since most of the first episode was just setup. But that setup has at least me hooked for the rest of it.

Isn't that contradiction the central point? Despite being reincarnated, the otaku is still the emotionally stunted child he was in Japan. It's not he's "bad luck" that was holding him back in his former life so much, as it was his attitude. Rudeus has good and bad things that happen to him but, whenever something bad happens his entitled and child like attitude and outlook on things causes the bad things to consume him and end up hurting those around him.

 No.111558

I thought they did a good job making Rudeus so insufferable that nobody who didn't love obnoxious little shits would drop the show within the first couple episodes, but I guess I was wrong.  No.111562

How would the story acknowledge those character flaws? I would think the mere fact that people are constantly being pushed away or are leaving him is the story acknowledging these particular flaws.
He is "a guy who is at odds with civilization", by his own choice of course. It's worth noting that the world does seem to turn without him though, whether it accepts him or not. We see this in the plot lines that exclude Rudeus all together.
In the current arc we even have part of the main plot line that goes against the idea that the "world is terrible for not accepting him". In a a more typical fantasy anime, the plot line with Soldat would involve Rudeus either saving Soldat's life or embarrassing Soldat in a martial context. This would be the "world", emobodied by Soldat, being taught that Rudeus is actually already perfect and has to accept him. From the last 3 episodes of Mushoku Tensei we see this is not what happened. Soldat is constantly confrontational with Rudeus and only softens up to him once Rudeus has lost and is vulnerable. Admittedly Soldat's help to Rudeus could be considered immoral, but the point is that Rudues is being taught by the "world" and not the other way around.

The saving grace for Rudeus in the past was that he was still a kid, so his physical form gave him more leeway to act out. As he's growing up, his mentality is more matching his body which is going to lead to much more issues with his more socially stunted side.

 No.111567

Is he really socially stunted though or is he just an ass who can't cope with being anything less than perfect. People say that he's a poor soul who was subject to abuse, but he's lived a normal life for 15 years. All that's left that's not explainable by his past is that he's a person incapable of being anything other than perfect. And the world loves him none the less because he was blessed with talent and looks. As soon as he starts talking with them everyone loves him until he does something people dislike then they hate him for a few minutes until rudy cries a bit and then everyone tells him everything will be allright

 No.111568

There's like zero conflict in this series which isn't rudy hating that he exists.

Unique Skill really fell off. It's a shame, I found myself skipping ahead in the past two episodes and that's not a good sign at all.
Blonde girl is really cute at least. Crazy bunny girl is nowhere to be seen. What a shame. It's still cool that the protag uses magic bullets that he can imbue with elements or healing and other stuff, it reminds me of Etrian Odyssey, but it's not enough to save the show. I'll keep watching, but... ehh....

Huh, I recognized her as the blonde in Eiyuu Kyoushitsu, but I had no idea the /qa/ voice was in Level 1 Maou

There's a series of minute-long shorts on youtube (not "youtube shorts") of a crossover between Tempuru and the Kanojo escort girls. No one bothers to sub these things, but I'm not really interested anyway.
I like Tenpuru a lot while I hate Kanojo (except for how beautiful the art is) so it's a conflicting feeling. Strange to see, either way.

A truly great morally grey villain is not one whom does evil and yet is nice to puppies, or has done some good in the past. That makes for a weak attempt to force unto others your view that your writing is deep. No, a great morally grey villain is one whose motivations for their actions are understandable, and their end goal may even be noble. Yet their way of accomplishing said goal is reprehensible. In that sense, Geto represents a fantastic model that other lesser authors, those that made me sick of the trope, should consider when attempting to shoehorn in their complexity.

That said, the second season of Jujutsu, or more specifically the flashback arc, has been my favorite thing airing so far. I argued in favor of Rudeus and the world of Mushoku being tied with it earlier in the season, but it's simply proven itself far more engaging with a wider array of characters I'm feeling attached to. With Gojo and Geto possibly being my favorites of the decade. More than attaching itself to Sukuna, their rivalry really drives the story.

Speaking of great villains, Kosugi in Zom100 was pretty great too. Fit the bill perfectly of a narcissistic manipulative psychopath that I have to believe the author experienced themselves for how well he was portrayed. My only real issue would be the way that it also seemed like the author knew someone like them in that he had him pissing his pants and needing to be saved and then left by everyone the next episode. But, the author doesn't want to drag down the story with maniacs and focus more on exploring the world so I get it.

Season's almost over, so I guess I'll give a basic ranking of the stuff I watched that wasn't in the seasonal stream.

Eiyuu Kyoushitsu - Really fun. The humor is good and the episode variety is very enjoyable. Episode 10 locked the students inside a lost world "pantry" where they lived as caveman hunting sentient vegetables. The references are very direct. Episode 9 had the Eva Seele table thing which everyone does, but it even had the Congratulations scene which was kind of surreal to see in such a blatant way. My only complaint, and it's not really a complaint of the show, is I don't like the washed out/blurry look. I like thick lines and vibrant colors. I definitely recommend this show.

Unique Skill - Started off strong, but suffered the usual fate of the guy becoming too powerful too quickly. The girls are good, but they didn't give the best ones (tiny blonde and killer rabbit) enough time later on. They did remedy this as killer bunny girl came back and joined the party, but she spent 5 episodes away by that point. Probably can't recommend this one unless you skip the parts without the bunny girl or blonde after episode 3.

Vending Machine - Great show. It's a gimmick, but the gimmick is done well. Distributing porn magazines to distract bandits or shooting out ice cubes and dry ice to defeat a fire skeleton is such a fun spin on things. He gets stronger like any other protag, but it's still somewhat reasonable. It passed the isekai test of a protag that didn't become a god by episode 3. I think I said early on that it will depend on the strength of the side characters to be good, and they're strong. Another very fun show that people should watch!

I'm slowly watching the Shiro Seijo show, but I haven't watched enough to give a full opinion on it. The first 4 episodes are standard, sleepy SoL stuff. I'll also marathon Bleach once every episode is out, but I'm sure it won't be too different from Spring's cour which means it will be quite great.

Lv1 Maou had an odd sort of mundane down-to-earth feeling, where Fred the cleric becomes a bureaucrat but even in his post-adventuring days is still able to effortlessly nuke Ganma's walls without needing to whip out any special moves or transformations. He just goes and does it, no speeches or anything. Leo stands parallel as the leader of a breakaway ~something~ and is also able to clear the forest in the same manner. They're in a league of their own, they're powerful in more than one way, but they're not kings or emperors. It's got just the right scale. The same goes for Max's and Maou's escalating sports matches, it's silly but it shows they're still damn strong.

I think that's important because it shows that these people are not a joke and don't stereotypically hold back either, they know what they're doing and so should Max. It provides a nice contrast, and it makes sense that if anything would've gotten him out of his slump it'd be going out and proving his worth in a fight once more. So, although I think the serious and action parts had their place and moments like Maou going out to fight just to get Max motivated I liked quite a bit, it REALLY didn't need to spend close to four episodes on the fight, and the flashbacks were indeed kinda pointless (especially the ones focusing on Yulia, since she wasn't present at all).

Probably the only one I'm going to vaguely remember.

>Basically just reset everything to the status quo
Hard disagree. The minister was ousted, Fred took his place, Leo became mayor of the now integrated Ganma province, and Max fixed his public image. It's not a reset, and it's much more of a resolution than your regular open ending.

That's a nice write-up. It's true that there was some good development, but I still feel that it failed to focus properly on its strengths. The unmotivated hero coached by a reincarnated former enemy and a relationship beginning to blossom was really nice. Well, I think I already said this stuff already. I just didn't feel invested in all the politics and fighting.

>>115006
I didn't watch much, but I think a lot of people overlooked the vending machine show and dismissed it as a shallow gimmick. It has good characters, although they are able to insinuate a bit too much from the isekai'd vending machine guy's preset vending machine stock phrases. It doesn't feel like he's overpowered, but simply knowledgeable and using the tools available to him.
His obsessive level of knowledge of real life vending machines allows him to morph into the right machine for the situation which is something I found far more interesting than the usual isekai stuff.
Also it's getting a season two!
