Do you use any software that other people may not know about that you like?
I started using (and eventually even bought!) this thing called Wallpaper Slideshow after trying a bunch of free ones and getting frustrated. https://www.gphotoshow.com/wallpaper-slideshow-pro.php
Basically, you give it folder(s) of your choice and it will assemble a collage image of them and make it your background. You can configure it with a timer that changes it and I have it set to 15 minutes. I had originally used John's Background Switcher that someone thankfully linked to me a few months ago: >>91800 https://johnsad.ventures/software/backgroundswitcher/
I liked this one more because there's less wasted space, more options, and it just generally seems to assemble the image better. I turn it off before I go to bed each night though because I'm worried that it's keeping my hard drive active all day, which probably isn't good. I should maybe research that sometime...

This pairs well with something like Grabber ( https://github.com/Bionus/imgbrd-grabber ) that can bulk download tags from booru sites.
Of course, this stuff is kind of wasteful if you don't have an extra monitor with a wallpaper that's largely visible, but I find myself like that sometimes so it's pretty nice.

Handbrake - A very easy to use program that lets you massively optimize videos and convert them to other formats.

Hydrus - Basically an offline booru on your PC that lets you make custom tags and also mass download images from websites using tags or just simply a URL. You can also set up auto downloaders too, typically I set them to artists I like. It also has a browser extension to easily send images to it.

Hydrus was something I was looking at doing alongside something like Everything were I was on the fence about a file explorer replacement. But if it's easy to download and sort to I'll quit procrastinating and just get it.

 No.2902

Hydrus is something I've been procrastinating trying for quite a long time now. I've heard talk of people AI tagging images and then sorting them with Hydrus so that's probably the efficient way to do things now if you have tens of thousands or more images to tag and organize.

I've been very annoyed with the small size of icons in Windows 10 on this higher resolution monitor and after a bunch of searching I found a solution! Also the same company makes a bunch of other desktop customization stuff that I'm trying out! I'll probably make the icon sizes a little bit smaller, but LOOK!
The taskbar is done with ObjectDock https://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/
Desktop stuff is done with Fences https://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

Unfortunately ObjectDock has some weaknesses, like not showing a little hover pop-up preview if you have multiple windows of a program open like a browser or folders. Maybe I can find a way to sneak in the old taskbar somewhere.
And of course for wallpaper I'm still using the thing I mentioned in the OP.

Atmosphere is a nice piece of software for wangblows that generates background noises and sounds, seemingly abandoned by the developers and even the website is long gone. The default sounds it comes with are kinda bad though, but as I suspected, you can very easily change them by replacing the original files in the bin folder with your own by exporting an OGG file and renaming it into .isx using audacity. I tried VLC but Im assuming any media player can play these files to check which ones you want to replace.
I just changed the campfire sound into a nice swaying trees sound, there's also a whole array of sounds that play at random intervals (like thunder and a bunch of nature noises) which you can change to your liking.

WACUP (WinAmp Community Update Pack) - https://getwacup.com/
I've been using WinAmp as my standard music player for well over 20 years and just recently found out that there's a project called "WACUP" that strives to improve and maintain the classic WinAmp experience. That said, I can't outright recommend WACUP and mostly just want to bring attention to the project in the hopes that it will improve in the future.

As of right now, it sadly comes with a lot of default settings that I personally dislike, such as automatically getting cover art and lyrics from the internet, and the settings are so absolutely convoluted that it takes around half an hour just to take a look at everything.
I normally use WinAmp 5.24 or WinAmp Lite 5.666 (I honestly forgot about the differences, but those are the two versions I have archived) and the only thing I like better about WACUP right now is that it supports formats like .vgz and some tracker ones right out of the box. It also comes with a handy waveform seeker.

Would any anon here be willing to share a Torrent client for which seeding can be reliably turned off? Or any helpful information regarding this matter. I am aware of the old uTorrent builds and the modifications one can make to Deluge to allow for this, but both of those methods for some reason sadly only last for a couple of minutes at best. Small files work fine, but once a download has been active for over 5 minutes or so, my client very slowly starts to upload again.

This seems to be a really touchy subject on the general internet, but some people prefer this approach over anything like VPNs for media for which you only care to not distribute it if you're outside the US.

 No.4410

Probably look into blocking upload for the torrent client with a firewall rule? Or is that not what you're looking for?

 No.4411

>>4410
I do have to admit that I wouldn't know how to do that properly with my severe lack of knowledge regarding networking. I did try an outbound rule for the client, but that seemed to kill downloads as well.

 No.4412

File:0.png (7.31 KB,368x64)

>>4411
Apparently it does get in the way of downloads as well:
Why Blocking Outbound Traffic Kills Downloads
Torrent clients need to:
Initiate outbound connections to peers and trackers.
Send requests for file pieces to other users.
Communicate with trackers or DHT nodes (for peer discovery).

So if you block all outbound traffic for the torrent client:
It can’t request pieces → no downloads.
It can’t contact trackers/DHT → no peers found.
Even if someone tries to upload to you, your client won't be able to complete the handshake.

Any reason why setting the upload speed to 1kbps won't do?
If you're using qbittorrent you can set the "Maximum number of upload slots" to 0.
Other than that, I don't know of any other way, sorry.

Damn... As for using 1 kb/s, I haven't tried for a couple years now and shall do so later, but I remember it not having made a difference to the accidental upload behavior, still hovering around 30 kb/s even with the limit. I don't know if there is a minimum threshold you need to cross for someone to make a case against you, which is why ideally not a single byte would ever make it over.

>If you're using qbittorrent you can set the "Maximum number of upload slots" to 0.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your help! My old uT build has that option too, but I'm gonna give qB a try and see if it behaves more accurate.
I did play around a little bit in uT's advanced settings just now and was able to finish a longer test download with 0 B uploaded, so I might be on the right track now. It still reports an active upload speed of the usual 30 kb/s, but the total bytes thankfully stay at 0, so I hope that activity only comes from client responses.

Can't say I know myself, either. I just VPN up and leave as soon as it completes. I feel bad, but I've had to do this for Western media for almost a decade now. Thankfully I barely ever find myself searching for it. Things will probably be getting worse...

 No.4415

>>4414
Same thing here! When it comes to more niche things, it's often hard to find them traditionally hosted and you "have" to resort to P2P and its gigantic ecosystem. I'm not too big a fan of VPNs, but may I ask which one you're using? Perhaps I should get with the times and add an extra layer.

I hope the supposed resurgence of sailing will eventually result in some innovation. Perhaps some system to do with scrambled data that can only be unscrambled with a key, rendering any download completely fair game pre local rescramble and somehow making sharing unpunishable for good. Not an IT guy though, that's probably way worse of a thought than it sounds to me.

 No.4416

>>4415
I2P+Torrenting is already possible. It's not fast or popular, but it is possible.
If the current system didn't work in vast majority of the world, torrent client developers would start pushing solutions immediately in order to not be irrelevant.

Japanese filesharing client PerfectDark for example has a reputation system. I2P gives reputation based on your shared bandwidth.
It would be possible for someone to combine a bunch of discovered technological solutions to build an anonymous reputation system where you have to share to get good download speeds without letting the users know the reputation of whoever they are interacting with or who they are by having a share more get more protocol when it comes to downloads.

Nobody has any incentive not to seed in such a protocol because seeding will improve your own downloads. The problem is breaking into the mainstream which is ideally something done with a "PopcornTime"-like client that just so happens to be using I2P only and being preloaded with eveything a normal would want to watch and a community organizing to be on standby to seed all these boring movies and shows in order to grow the protocol.

Mullvad is a reputable one. They have a "no bullshit policy", no affiliate links or advertisement through influencers, no deals, no free mode, just a flat €5 fee every month. The account isn't tied to your email or anything, it's just a randomly generated number. Have been proven to keep no logs, and say that in the event that they have to change any of their strict privacy policies due to changes in laws in their country, they will close shop.

 No.4419

Avoid torrents all together and pay the small fee for USENET access. Everything is available on there that you could find on public/private torrent trackers. But with no requirement to seed. I keep using USENET and don't mind the $20 or so a year to keep access to it because it is a massive archive of media without any of the problems that come with p2p. No one has ever been cut off by their ISP or sent a love letter for downloading content off USENET that I know of. It has much more redundancy than anything else and people actually fill requests when you ask for them. You also get access to a pretty decent discussion platform that automatically filters out non-techies by default.

If you aren't willing to pay than look into IRC+XDCC. Most stuff is mirrored on there that is available through USENET. Tons of things that claim to have zero seeds on torrent trackers are quietly being served on XDCC bots with good upstream speeds.

The nature of the torrent protocol means you'll have to have a little upstream going out to communicate with the rest of the swarm to request parts of the file. That's just how it is.

Handbrake ( https://handbrake.fr/ ) Is a very cool program that lets you re encode whatever video you throw at it

I've personally used it quite a lot, because my computer cannot play anything beyond 720p videos, which is actually not as annoying as it sounds. It makes you value whatever it is that you want to watch

I also have a little question; Can any of you anons reccomend a simple and lightweight tool for editing videos that works on linux? I'm looking for something similar to Windows Movie Maker

 No.5249

>>5247
I use kdenlive but it's neither simple nor lightweight. Not too familiar with GUI video editing tools, so I don't know what else is out there. Handbrake is certainly easier to use, I think of it as a pretty flexible GUI front-end to ffmpeg. I've used it when I was on Windows.
For the kind of re-encoding use cases such as you needing to turn videos 720p, I'd use command-line ffmpeg.

 No.5254

Since the thread is active right now and speaking of re-encoding: Does anyone know if there's a nice and lightweight program that re-encodes a video according to a specified target file size? The encoder should basically ignore quality degradation and just do the best it can with the settings and file size specified.

I'm using Handbrake myself, but haven't found such an option, meaning I'm instead constantly changing the quality slider and converting until I get the desired size.

Thank you very much for the advice. Are there any go-to methods for searching, aside from those two big search engines that immediately pop up on Google? Just asking to make sure, because some stuff that I know has like 100+ entries on various public trackers either doesn't show up on there at all, or there are only 1 or 2 old versions.
