also, since universities were run by the church, students of those universities were considered clergy and under the jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical courts as well
they were kinda notorious for being lenient so basically after a wild night out of drinking and breaking shit and getting into fights the students would usually get just a slap on the wrist compared to what would happen to them if they were tried by a civil court

needless to say, students back in the middle ages were pretty despised
