 No.10489

This is frowned upon on the /a/ board I frequent elsewhere. Kissu is more friendly so hopefully people won't get mad about my posting this.

I'm looking for new and old series to add to my backlog and watch. I missed out on a lot of manga and anime from about 2010 to 2018 due to life obligations and living in the middle of nowhere without internet access. I've watched/read a handful of popular stuff people post all of the time because the girls were cute. But whenever I've asked for recommendations on the usual boards people get hostile.

What are some of Kissu's favorite manga/doujin/anime/VNs? I'm talking about anything released between the 1950s and today. I'll start.

I really like Eirian Nain. I haven't read the manga yet but the OVAs were great. They didn't finish the story because they couldn't get funding to do more OVAs. The author has been trying for decades and the anime series has been stuck in development hell since 2002 or so. I keep putting off reading the manga because I've been hoping new OVAs might finally get green-lit and I don't want to get spoiled. It's a really cool series and I like the MCs because they skate on rollerblades.

Wikipedia for it is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_Nine

My second suggestion is yet another OVA that never finished. Battle Programmer Shirase. Probably my favorite series ever. It's about a master computer hacker that sleeps in everyday and lives in a small apartment filled with computers. He does battle with other hackers. He's hired by different people including people in the military who all look exactly the same and are voiced by the same person. The series never finished and ended on a cliff hanger. Been holding out hope for decades that they might start it back up and finish it. It has 15 minute episodes so it's a shorter series. Be warned the Bluray release is really awful because they used the DVDs as a source and badly upscaled them along with not properly IVTCing the frames. So it looks really awful. The translation is pretty bad too. If you're going to watch it watch the old Xvid fansub releases.

I'm biased because I worked on the fansub release of it back in the day with a group of friends. I still have the original release if anyone wants it. I already host it on an XDCC bot but I'll upload to MEGA if anyone here wants to grab it. Highly recommended show.

In the show Misao Amano from Pretty Sammy and a bunch of other anime in that era is his loving Niece. Who cooks for him and always visits him after school. He regularly gets into compromising positions with her (pic related) due to things like Earthquakes or something else happening right before someone comes into the room looking to hire him for a hacking job. Lots of fan service in this show.

That's my suggestions for now. Looking forward to Kissu's. Hopefully, people post stuff I haven't seen before.

There is another JC in the military who's also a hacker working for them. In this anime the military employs a lot of JC and JK hackers. Our hero is forced to deal with things like pic related. Must be a hard life.

She's really cute. I love her military uniform. She ends up joining his Niece's school to find out more about him because they aren't sure if he's the legendary hacker know as BPS at first.

I guess the above qualifies as a spoiler? Sorry. I just wanted an excuse to post this image if I'm being honest.

The military uniforms for the hacker squad are also really kawaii. Last but not least, the OP for this show is great. In my top 5 anime OPs of all time for sure.

I might post some stuff later, but I just wanted to pop in to mention that you are the first person I have ever seen spell it as 'Eirian Nain'. It took until I saw the Wikipedia link for me to realize what you were even talking about. In any case though, I would second that recommendation, for anyone who is a fan of dark-moe anime.

I forgot one important thing. If you're going to watch BPS be aware that if you do opt for the DVD, BD or an encode from either you're missing out on some content. The original airing on TV that we used for the fansub is in 15 episodes (running about 15 minutes each). When the released it on DVD/BD they cut a lot of content and released it as 6 episodes by merging episodes together. But they didn't include a lot of stuff like the preview of the next episodes that were on TV, cut some scenes out and did various other misc. changes.

That's why I suggest you watch the old Xvid hardsubbed releases. Since they're the only ones that have all the content and didn't remove a handful of scenes. I don't know why they did this. But it was probably due to lack of funding.

This show got canceled mid-run due to lack of funding and some other reasons I can't remember.

One of the reasons I love this show so much is because the staff gave a shout out to the fansub group that translated it into English in the last episode. They had an apology at the end of episode 15 to all the fans of the show and explained why it was ending prematurely and on a cliff hanger. They thanks all the fans for support including the overseas fans and the fans that fansubbed it. Only time I ever remember a show doing that.

Yeah I should have just said Alien 9 or used the kana. I called it that because that's what it's called in my archives. I try to remain consistent with using the romaji with my file names because it makes it much easier to manage them with all the folders I have on my file server. I would use kana but a lot of the time I have to manage that file server from a keyboard and OS that doesn't support typing in it or rendering it.

Looking forward to your recommendations. I'd really like to watch some new stuff I haven't seen before in the cyberpunk genre. One of the main reasons I got into watching anime back in the day is because I got a tape of Dirty Pair with some episodes on it. I really miss the old 80s cyberpunk shows. Wish they still made those. I know one came out awhile back that got really popular but it wasn't my cup of tea from the one episode I saw. Granted, it wasn't the first episode so maybe it's alright and I just didn't enjoy it because I saw a filler episode and didn't know wtf was going on story wise.

>I'll upload to MEGA if anyone here wants to grab it
Please do, BPS is such a fun OVA and it's a crying shame it never got a proper seasonal adaptation.

As for recommendations the first thing that comes to mind is Hakumei to Mikochi, a SOL made by a former Touhou doujin author. Really good healing anime that sadly got heavily overshadowed by Yuru Camp that season.

Here you go anon. Love my new fiber connection. MEGA lets me make out the upload so no more waiting an forever to upload something like this. Here is a folder with all the original fansub releases we did back in the day.

https://mega.nz/folder/QmVwxS6b#z5bEC_ALVzL_64d7OwwbCw

I also put them up on an XDCC bot we use for other things. It's upload speed is really good. Anyone that can't use MEGA or wants to grab them off IRC for whatever reason can get them here:

http://miyos.mooo.com:8000/?g=NEWSTUFF
Join #miyosmiyos on Rizon to use the bot. The XDCC bot is Miyo-chan.

Speaking of this show. Last year I started working editing the raw video from the BD in an attempt to do a re-release of BPS that used softsubs and would have higher quality video. The issue is they didn't properly IVTC the video source they used (I think the DVD) so there are bad frames every 2-3 frames. Meaning I have to manually step through episodes frame-by-frame to fix them and some frames are so bad it'll be impossible to fix them. I've been trying to track down a copy of the DVD or a rip of it for over a year. Since I could probably do my own upscale to HD resolution and produce something better than the BD. Or I could at least get the bad frames on the BD from the DVD and upscale those then combine everything.

Once I fix the frames in every episode I think have to manually go through and split them, merge in content from the TV release and edit it all back together to make sure all the content is present. Oh and I gotta go through an OCR our script from the hardsub release to create softsubs, time those, fix misc. errors that slipped through QC way back then.

It's a big undertaking. I was slowly chipping away at it but without the DVD it doesn't make any sense to continue working on the video.

If anyone can find a DVD rip I'd really really appreciate it. I would do a SD release in modern codecs, with softsubs/signs and of better quality over all. Since we used TV rips from Japanese P2P network when we did this back in the day so the quality isn't the greatest. I'd also do an HD release at some point time permitting. I'd really love to get this done and introduce it to new people that haven't seen it before.

>it's a crying shame it never got a proper seasonal adaptation.
Probably the series I'm heart broken about the most. The story was really good and I wanted to see what was going to happen to BPS after the big story event that happened in the final episodes. I'd give anything to get the original staff back and have them finish it.

It's also one of the few shows that ever did hacking on TV right imo. Sure they do some crazy stuff to jazz it up for people that aren't into programming. But I felt like it was portrayed well and it was funny. Especially when they show the MC using stuff like IRC chat.

I still want that one handed keyboard he uses in episode one.

This looks comfy but the most popular release on nyaa is from a person I refuse to watch stuff from. He's on my shit list for various reasons. Going to try to grab the less popular release from another group and hope it's better. I've never seen the other group that released it before. Hopefully theirs is better.

Which copy do you have? Did any real fansub groups ever pick it up or are all the releases using CR subtitles? I can watch raws unless they use obscure references (working on that). But I want to watch this with a friend.

Thanks for your suggestion. This wasn't already in my archives. It should have been. Not sure how I missed it.

Shame. It looks like all the other releases use the same subtitle track from the group I dislike. I can't stand that guys subtitle tracks. They're so awful. He also tacks on honorifics to his badly translated subtitles and thinks that's the same as old school fansubs that were more faithful to the source content. Then his video/audio is typically really awfully encoded and over filtered to.

I'm going to watch this and see how bad the subtitles and video are. Maybe I'll do a proper release if I like it and can track down the untouched BD. I know it must be on a private tracker somewhere. Since all this guy does is download popular stuff from there and badly re-encodes it.

But this isn't the place for this repeat rant. I just hate modern nyaa now because half the time this same dude or someone in his group does a crappy release. Which floods out the old fansub group releases to the point where they no longer have seeds. Makes it hard to find a decent copy for archiving. Then they discourage and ban people that upload untouched BDs from nyaa or threaten to ban their private tracker accounts. That way they get a monopoly on access and no one else can upload decent releases to compete with them.

I'll see if my usual TLers are interested in this show is the subtitles are awful or they didn't translate things in the backgrounds important to the story. Thanks for the suggestion anon.

I have the MTBB one, which I assume is from the shit listed person in question. I don't care about subbing drama and the subs seem decent enough for a dekinai with the language skills of a toddler.

I don't think any fansub groups picked this one up, so the subs are most likely all CR or whatever else the BDs use.

My release is [NH].
Looking at the different subs, they all use MTBB as a base. Well, (GHOST) has no information at all so who knows what that one is using. It's kind of weird that there are so many releases of things when people all use the same subs.

>I don't care about subbing drama
I don't really either if I'm being honest. But I do have standards with what I store long term. I don't like subtitles from people that can't speak either language. Which is mostly why I avoid his stuff. The drama he causes is just secondary to that main problem.

>>10503
>My release is [NH].
I don't see his listed anywhere. Where did you get it?
>It's kind of weird that there are so many releases of things when people all use the same subs.
Not really. Modern groups are mainly people seeking donations all using CR subs.

I find it funny they credit MTBB when it's just CR subtitles with most likely "problematic" stuff removed. I've seen him and his friends do some really bad edits to CR subtitles over the years. Which is why I avoid them like the plague. None of them speak English as a first language and none of them know a lick of Japanese.
>Well, (GHOST) has no information at all
Be careful with the "best release lists" and anything that automates downloading things for you. Those same friends control everything listed on seadex and they've paid to have their stuff listed above everyone's else's releases in the automated *arr software. Which is why they get seeds when others don't. Most of them are from people running *arr software for their media servers.

But this isn't a thread about release drama it's for suggestions. Which I appreciate. I found a BD remux and I'm going to watch this one raw for practice. If the subtitles are awful I might run through the scripts myself and fix them. Thanks again. I know how I missed this show now. It came out just before I started archiving seasonal releases for my media server. I have a huge gap on it from about 2010-2018.

I despise private trackers a lot but perhaps I should bend over for access soon just so I can ghost leech everything of value and re-upload it to one of the trackers that isn't controlled by the current rip group mafia.

It looks like Subtitle track 3 here is from the official BD though if you want to avoid a specific sub group thing: https://nyaa.si/view/2005513

It's not available internationally yet, but when you get the chance I'd highly recommend checking out Virgin Punk.
It's a new cyberpunk anime by Yasuomi Umetsu, creator of stuff like Mezzo Forte and A Kite, and shares a lot in common with those series and the kinds of classic cyberpunk you're talking about, while also having some exceptionally good modern action animation and other contemporary flavour (the scenery, for example, isn't just a copy-paste of the cliche megacity of 80s cyberpunk, but instead almost reminds me more of something like Iblard Jikan).

Ah AB of course. I hate people lock up so much stuff on AB. It just seems stupid to lock up things like that and then complain about how people don't seed on public trackers. Since everyone uses a seedbox now.

Would you be willing to upload it elsewhere?

I really like "Noir" (2001) for its calm atmosphere, which is complimented very well by the beautiful soundtrack and early-2000s style. I last rewatched it around 10 years ago and distinctly remember having cried 2 or 3 times for pretty much no reason other than the fact that I enjoyed the atmosphere and my time with it so much. I remember the story having been nice to follow.
Be warned, however, that I am very biased because it aired here during my childhood and I feel a great deal of nostalgia for it. I always watch it in my native language and can't vouch for the original.

I also like "The Big O" (1999) for its atmosphere, music and characters, but I heavily dislike the story. It's also a mecha anime, which I don't like at all, but that doesn't take away from the things I enjoy about the show. I have a similar problem with NGE - no feelings whatsoever for the story, but it's the only mecha anime where I actually like the mechs.

Now this one I like for the story: "Watashi No Ashinaga Ojisan" (1990). It's about an orphan girl, Judy, being bestowed the opportunity to get an actual education, all financed by a mysterious benefactor she's only ever seen the shadow of and refers to as her "Daddy Long Legs". There are a couple of rules to the deal, one of which being that she has to write letters about her experiences to the benefactor. It's a very sweet, lovely show about childhood, friendship, love and learning about life / growing - and her Daddy Long Legs learns and grows alongside her, all thanks to her letters.
The themes are very similar to what makes "Heidi" (1974) great, even if the story and circumstances are very different.
