A show about girls, girls with SECRETS.
I have greatly procrastinated about keeping up with this show's second season, but I must now make a thread as I chip away at the ol' Himari backlog.

I know exactly why I paused watching, too. It was multiple episodes in a row of new characters that aren't that interesting. They already had a good cast of characters, and these new girls are just... boring.
So... I will resume watching and now I will probably fast forward these parts with these boring girls as the only other option is to stop watching. But the other characters are good so I don't' want to do that!

Hm, I guess it's not obvious, but it's actually an idol show! The girls have "secret" identifies as AiPris, which are girls that perform in a separate dimension entered via magical mirror. They sing on a stage and people can watch them on their phones.
The singing part is kind of meh, unfortunately, since each character has one song that's used every time. Each episode has about 3-4 minutes of re-used footage of the transformation and song as a result, so that part is similar to mahou shoujo.
The 3D looks decent enough, although it gets obliterated by bit rate limitations and it's difficult to take a screenshot of a good frame.

>The 3D looks decent enough, although it gets obliterated by bit rate limitations and it's difficult to take a screenshot of a good frame.
That's not the fault of the production. It's because everyone involved in distro is lazy and bad at their jobs. From the guy that mastered the BD down to the encoder that took that and butchered it.

I'm not sure why none of these people can produce something that looks good. It's really easy. It's kind of depressing that someone like me that learned digital video in my free time at age 12 can produce something better than someone that went to school for 4+ years to learn how to do production, editing and encoding.

It's really easy to adjust the bitrate and settings for those sections where a lot is going on in the background. You just have to find the frames and manually tell the codec to expect a jump in bitrate in those sections. Maybe adjust over all bitrate a bit to give yourself some breathing room.

Well, I mean, this is an airing show. I'm used to the transformation scenes in anything like this being obliterated and needing to wait for the BD to actually see it in its glory. I don't think the raw, uncompressed form exists outside of the studio at this point. Precure BDs are really amazing to see for this reason.

Moved by followup

>>32943
There is no reason why TV and streaming companies can't put out something on-par with BDs. Most BDs are pretty horribly mastered. They throw tons of bitrate at them for no reason and use a filter to inject grain to prevent banding in gradients because they're still using the old commercial 8-bit color [link-ommited] codec. Even using that codec you can prevent that stuff without using the lazy tricks they use. They just don't give a fuck because they only put 3-5 episodes on a disc and people will buy them anyway. Most people can't tell the difference anyway. But I'm repeating my usual rant when it comes to this stuff.

Just sad to see how bad things are and the fact that the industry will never change. I don't know why but it always seems like the people that hate whatever type of content the most are the ones that end up working on it and distroing it.

A little tip: If you use ffmpeg or one of the GUI tools for it you can search for I-frames. Then you can know which frames are the best for screenshots. I-frames will always have an entire image (same as a [link-ommited]/[link-ommited] basically) and get the most of the bitrate.

The bad frames you're seeing is where the codec didn't properly place an I-frame.

It doesn't have to be a lot of work. If you're on Windows you can use AVSPMoD and it'll show you what the frame type is. You can step through frame-by-frame with it or jump directly to any frame you want easily.

If you're on Linux you can still run this application through wine. There is a comparable application for vapoursynth but it's pretty awful. For some reason modern programmers aren't as good as making things as programmers were circa 90s-2000s.

That was a strange episode. It has to be self-contained due to the cameos, so it was exclusively in the AiPri dimension. And it was basically 40% of an episode because they played 5 different songs. Not unique songs, just songs of each character. "Oh, I want to sing for Kuromi, too!" "I want to show Melody what AiPri is like!"
Pretty cool, though.

They're cameo characters from a different series. They'll never be seen again. (Probably). And yes they're commonly just referred to as 'mascots'.
This show's mascots are floating little helpers that only exist in the AiPri dimension, but also Tsumugi inhabits a stuffed animal that she can control as her body. The former barely show up and only briefly as background characters, but Tsumugi usually gets a little focus every couple episodes.
This isn't really a show for Mascots, though. Might I suggest Mewkledreamy for that?

Episode 18 was good. We learned that Vivi's overt happiness was a mask. When she was a child she hated herself and never thought she could amount to being an Aipri. She wants to be Chii because Chii is someone, unlike the other AiPri, that fought hard and never gave up after losing so many competitions and failing to Buzzlume Change (an idol powerup thing).
I can't remember if I mentioned in previous AiPri thread from last year, but Chii is a great character because she's smug, but deep inside there's a lot of inner conflcit with wanting to find success for someone who died when she was young. Chii isn't naturally gifted like the other girls.
So, Chii has taken Vivi as her protege.

The significance here is Chii was told to look to the stars when she was younger and in fact the woman that helped her grow was the one that died and said she would become one of the stars. I need to catch up again. I like the idea of having a few episodes in 'reserve', though, like for a rainy day or something.
It's time to watch the Halloween episode! How timely.

I'm catching up again, but man, these past few episodes have been rough. Just like last season, or earlier this season, whenever it centers on the singing competition it's basically just retreading the same story with different characters without adding anything. "I'm not good enough!" "You just need to practice and believe in yourself!" "I'm good enough!" "Hooray!"
Yes, this is a show made for little girls, but these episodes are really dragging on. There's very little cuteness and very little humor. They're singing the same songs as always, or rather playing the same clips. I'm not even taking a single screenshot after most episodes.
It looks like episode 36 is centered on Himari's mom, or so the episode title states.
Also, very little Chii and almost no Vivi at all. DISAPPOINTING!

Episode 38 was entirely the preexisting song performances and then they they had a minute of stills of gift giving/eating and then they said Merry Christmas. Disappointing for a Christmas episode...

Episode 39 was finally a return to form after about 8 disappointing episodes in a row. I was ready to give up, but this was good.
It was a Mitsuki-centered episode and she was quite cute in her Cinderella-like dress. From what I've seen online, Mitsuki is by far the most popular character in Japan, but she has blonde hair and blue eyes so that was sort of a guarantee.
HIMARI CRASHED THE SYSTEM AND ERASED MITSUKI'S PROMOTIONAL VIDEO!?!
Stuff actually happened in this episode! Mitsuki is sick! She's leaving sooner than expected for America?! Oh no! An actual storyline?!

Himari's show has ended after 102 episodes. First season was great, lots of fun and cute SoL stuff.
Season two became too serious with a plot that I just didn't feel very invested in. The strongest and most fun characters were sidelined as even Himari and Mitsuki became background characters.
Season two also fell into a lot of filler episodes where they replay the songs over and over, so of 23 minutes of a show the new parts were between 3 to 7 minutes and it was generally them talking about performing instead of doing anything cute.
Vivi and Chii were my favorite characters and they deserve their own show. Chii kind of reminds me of Kana from Oshi no Ko in a way with how much she struggles yet is strong enough to persevere causing you to cheer for her all the way.

All in all, I'd say I enjoyed about 20% of Season 2. Sunken cost fallacy hit hard. This last song, though, it was really good. It was 4 and a half minutes long!
There's a movie on the way, but man I don't know how it will go. I hope the awesome person/people at Piyoko will sub it. Seems like it's all the work of Salieri, so thank you Salieri for allowing me to partake of Aipri for the past two years.
Here's hoping the next Aipri is good: https://[link-ommited]-AiPri/

I'll still post Himari in a blanket occasionally, but it will feel strange for it to no longer be a 'current' show. Goodbye, Himari.

A NEW SEASON IS HERE! Episode 1 was pretty good, but now I'm going to start episode 2! There are some pretty cute girls in this one. There's the red-haired ojousama, the Zundamon, the blonde protag, the blue-haired opposite protag, the brunette nerd and the purple-haired kinda mature-ish fortune teller! The cast seems stronger overall than the last AiPri at first glance, but we'll have to wait and see how they turn out.
I like the premise where the main girl grants wishes, although not in a literal sense I don't think. (I mean, no actual magic... right?)

Cute episode. I like how Gumi says "Gumi" a lot, Gumi. It's Gumi cute, Gumi.
In this episode they played two songs that were already shown in episode 1 and 2 meaning there was like 4 minutes of re-used footage, but such is the AiPri way.
Looking forward to Gumi's debut as an AiPri.
