 No.32468

I've been depressed for around 4 years now but today was particularly bad, I've always had thoughts of suicide, and pretty sure most people do from time to time, but they were nothing serious and were just thoughts, the frequency of such thoughts has been increasing in the past year, and today it felt like I had my first serious urge to commit suicide, I haven't done anything yet, but now since I'm a little calmer it feels scary to look back at it, I don't really want to kill myself, but I don't know what to do now. Well, anyway... for now, I will just calm myself by playing some video games and try to forget everything happening in my life.

You really need to talk about this with mental health professionals. Imageboards and video games aren't substitutes for professional help.

Not OP but Ive tried those and it just made me feel worse talking to norms who tell you all of your problems are fake and you just need to pretend its all OK

Seconding this.
I have tried therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists and even went to a mental ward, none helped.
And I have heard similar experiences from other people.

So? The alternative is worse. I'm sorry you've had bad experiences but not all psychologists/psychiatrists are the same. I was in a pretty bad shape until a few years ago but lately thanks to therapy and medication I can at least work for a few hours, talk to people or order something from a menu which seemed impossible at the time.

OP here, I was actually planning to see a psychiatrist for the first time, but now after you said that I'm not so sure anymore...

I've had the same experience in the past. What I will say is exclusively my experience and what I concluded from it, so do not take this as 100% reality.
I've tried speaking to many different professionals ever since I was a teen. Just like most people, most psychologists are mediocre, to not say straight up bad. Not only that, but the area has many different schools of thought, and most are literally pseudo science. "How do I find a good one?" you might ask. Well, I don't know. Good luck. What I did was research the universities near me, and calling/sending the professors emails. I eventually talked to a behaviorist professor that really knew his kuso, and going to him really helped me. I often times get sad, I dread my future as I think too much, and a lot of other kuso. But I'm not "paralyzed" as I once was. I recommend you talking to a professional, but do understand they are not all the same.

I'm going to say one thing.
Despite me having a bad (or I guess neutral considering they neither helped nor made anything worse) experience with them, I'd still give it a go.
It might work for you, just don't expect miracles.

I'm not necessarily trying to discourage you, just that I'm big fan of people immediately jumping to psychiatrists and such, as if it was some kind of miracle cure when it really isn't, at least not for everyone.

And hey if you need to talk or whatever feel free.

For a change of stereotypical pace, let's neither wallow nor offer wise advice nor suggest professional help.

>>32469
NTA but I read blog-tier operational advice books from professionals on how their sessions are like, and I think I'd only get triggered from them for real, even when I'm on a good wave.

I think if things are so messed up in your life that you have seriously depressive thoughts, you should probably try and find someone to lean on a bit. Whether it be parents, family, or friends, even online ones work, you should find someone you truly trust to confide in. Or if all that's a no-go just try some of those free mental support hotlines. I tend to agree with >>32470 but it might be better than nothing? Not sure. Anyways, the best thing to think about is that no matter what happens, as long as you're living things can potentially get better. To me, I like to vent online about whatever's bothering me and letting it all out at times can help restore a bit of happiness or at least emotional stability.

What would a life worth living look like to you? What are you missing right now? Is there anything you can imaging doing that might get from where you are right now to where you want to be, no matter how impossible it might feel right now?

If you can't answer that third question, it might be a good idea to talk to a psychologist. That's one of the few things they can actually help with.
For what it's worth: the typical chain of referrals is GEP -> psychologist -> some kind of social worker -> psychiatrist -> psychiatrist+medication ----> mental ward. You'll know if the track you're on isn't helping long before anyone suggests that last step, and you can always ask them what alternatives there are.

If you think there might be some underlying reason behind your depression, it can help to get diagnosed and ask to get referred to a psychologist specialized in that kind of thing. (I'm by no means an expert on this, but autism, AD(H)D, BPD and PTSD are some of the most common underlying conditions that can cause recurring depression, and many broad-focus psychs don't really understand the challenges people with those conditions face. That's part of the reason why so many people have bad experiences with therapists.)

In any case, the whole referral process will probably take a while. Playing video games in the meantime won't hurt as long as you have something to look forward to.

This is good advice in general. Even if they can't solve the underlying problem, having people around who are willing to listen and support you can make a huge difference.

Not OP, but how do you find people like that?
Genuinely, I know that a lot of people rely on their family for that, but in my case that's out of the question.

I don't think I ever had someone like that...

I don't think there's really an answer for that question... You gotta meet people, get to know them. Eventually you're close enough that you can discuss these things, I guess. I've been online for a bit more than 20 years, and I've gotten exactly *one* person that I feel comfortable confiding with.
