>>152374>make it scary to participateYes I could never get past that whenever I tried discord.
At least for me it's even worse than in a forum; In a forum you can re-read your post 2000 times to try not say something retarded, it's way slower so people will digest "oh a new person!" better, most forums have a welcoming board for new users and an etiquette of not bullying them too much...
On discord on the other hand, you are jumping in to a live conversation with people who already know each other. It's like real life social anxiety, walking up to random people in a party, but worse somehow. When exactly is it that you have something sufficiently insightful to say? And then the damn
x is typing thing. You are on a fucking pressure cooker there, everyone staring at you, it looks weird if you retract from typing so you have to commit, you can't take too long or the conversation will move on before you finish typing. It's a nightmare
No.152388
>>152380Discord also has an in-built hierarchy system with their roles and whatnot. It implicitly reinforces the idea that some users are superior than others, if you're a 'lower' role you're ignored more often and treated as lesser compared to other users. Which then gives way to people power-tripping over having moderation rights on servers etc. Really, I hate discord.
No.152392
>>152380speaking of anxiety discord sure went all in on triggering that. not only is there all the problems you mentioned but as you start typing your message, the fact that you are is being broadcast to everyone. i don't get why its not opt in as im sure it adds unnecessary pressure even for more normal people than me

It's better to start getting familiar with IRC (or Matrix) and not get too attached to Discord. With the new CEO (the one from Activision) already talking about "growth" and "going public", enshitification is guaranteed to happen in the near future.

>>152407Current Discord is pink dyed shite with sprinkles on top, but at least server admins claim it saves them time when compared to running a forum (they killed our vBulletin community forums to move to this fucking shit), so maybe there's something "good" to it.
It's going to go full Taco Bell diarrhoea, and I hope the user's buttholes burn so bad that they have to start moving to other platforms.

>>152406I remember some years ago they changed their ToS to storing audio conversations. At this point they are likely actively being scanned through by AI to gather information about people to sell data either for ads or for people in the data harvesting business (governments, insurance companies, etc).
Nobody should be attached to that site, it's not software. It's a service where the users are the product. People only use it for convenience, but it's fully possible to get people to talk elsewhere. I don't talk to any close friends via discord. If my account was deleted tomorrow it would not mean much to me.
Discord has been fully cancer lately mostly because of the users though. I hate seeing people share downloads via discord. I don't want to join your stupid server to download something. And no, I don't want to report bugs or get help via discord. Why do COMPANIES think this is a good idea? Holy shit.
No.152423
>>152406Frankly I can't even imagine how you could make discord worse. The software itself is so so bloated. The direct CIA phoneline over every conversation you have and everything you run on your computer is insane. h-how would they make it worse?
I'm sure they'll find a way to surprise me though.
No.152427
>>152423they should interrupt the vcs with ad breaks and insert ads that look like normal messages randomly. twitch and youtube taught us that people don't really care if their livestream gets interrupted by ads or if a song they're listening to gets interrupted by an ad and then continues

>>152423If it was just the CIA... Nintendo wants your head, Shitscord happily obliges.
In most cases, the people that use Discord have never known anything better, are mobile users or lack the skills to use something like IRC.
- Take IRC and do your own proprietary spin on it
- No open protocol, so you are stuck with their own client
- Want to have your own colour scheme? Pay for Nitro
- You only want it for chatting, no games involved? it's still going to read all your processes with no option to disable it
- And apparently no one sees anything wrong with being able to create a server for free, the things that can be paid for being fully optional, and no advertising. When you don't fully know how the company is footing a bill that can't be small, something is extremely wrong here.
Despite my previous post
>>152406 being read as
"Discord is not bad right now but will be", I despise it and scares me to think about the damage they are causing. The few communities that did not end becoming a Facebook group 10 years ago are ditching their hosted forums for a proprietary platform that can shut you down for any reason... Oh right, I did not mention that I am the kind of person that reads the EULAs and privacy policies.

>>1524294chan has been getting worse at an ever increasing pace for years and the people that have left for greener pastures is still minimal, so I'm not hopeful. The only thing that could drive users away is if they started charging to use it. I still remember when pre-Facebook Whatsapp wanted 1€ per year to pay for the servers and the masses started rioting and threatening with migrating to Telegram.

>>152428>In most cases, the people that use Discord have never known anything better, are mobile users or lack the skills to use something like IRC.While true to an extent, the main reason why people continue to use it or refuse to move to anything else (IRC included) is simply because the alternative isn't a 1:1 Discord copy, and i've heard it firsthand in niche forum threads discussing the new CEO and other shit, people going "Yeah this alternative is 500% and an entire universe better than Discord, but it doesn't have streaming so I'm not going to use it" with the occasional "Also I have to make accounts for separate servers??? I don't want that, this is why alternatives will never catch on"
No.152437
>>152434>but it doesn't have streamingI always forget that Discord does video conferences and voice. Wait, now you can stream there as if it was Twitch?
I'm pretty paranoid about people ever seeing my face or hearing my voice, so I only use text and that's probably why I can't see any plus points to defend Discord
>"Also I have to make accounts for separate servers???I have to make a new burner account every time I am forced to use a Discord server. And god. When Discord decides it does not trust you and locks your account until you give them your phone number. And lock it again if you ever remove the phone after that. No, fuck no. Fuck Discord, from here to Megaclite.
