According to the happenings thread >>101080 , Ash's journey in Pokémon is finally ending. It's pretty impressive. He was doing it back when I was a kid, but here we are in 2022 and it's finally over.
It brings lots of thoughts to mind apart from nostalgia.

- I wish I was into Pokémon more. It's like the /mlp/ people on 4chan, there's a bunch of dorks involved, even around my age, that still keep the magic alive. Sure, there's a bunch of kids as there should be, but it's interesting to see older people around making references that only people of a certain age would get. It's hard to find good internet losers.

-Names. People on the English internet generally refer to him as Ash (like this thread) and the localization names for each Pokemon as well. Some names are the same, but many of them aren't. One of my favorite Pokémon is Bulbausaur and not Fushigidane. With the internet full of arguments over everything regards translations, it's strange how this never seems to crop up.

-Great games. I haven't played the most recent ones, but I've never played one I didn't love. I think the newer games allow you to see the Types so you didn't need to throw moves around randomly, which was really getting to be a problem when there are 1000 of them instead of 150.

-The games get a LOT of various ROMhacks. There's even that one Touhou one that's not a hack but a standalone game. Not just simple hacks, either, but very involved stuff and you could spend thousands of hours playing them all. I should look into them more and try some out.

-Pokégirls. I think everyone knows this, but this series has some of the best character designs around and has been consistent about it since its inception. The Asuka vs. Rei thing never seemed that interesting to me in comparison to the girls in Pokémon. Even the 'girl of the week' in the anime had more interesting people in them. Duplica the girl with the Ditto that couldn't transform its face sticks out to me. Brock getting a crush on every girl really made sense.

-Just a fantastic style in general. There are places like https://hirespokemon.tumblr.com/ where you can see the old concept art and it's truly beautiful. Sugimori is a true genius. Also apparently his name is used by people as a keyword to improve the quality of AI art. A name synonymous with quality.

I learned how to type é on the keyboard waaaay back in the day just so I could type Pokémon. Alt + 0 + 2 + 3 + 3 !
So... do you have any strong Pokémon feelings? Are you a Pokémaniac?

 No.101096

idk man
to me it just seems like they've been milking it dry
is it not just the same thing over and over again?
wasnt super into it as a kid but did watch it on tv certainly after the first arc ended i had no interest whatsoever

The English names are grandfathered in. It's an unprincipled exception brought on by the fact that the people who would otherwise argue about it got into Pokemon before they joined an elitist internet subculture.

You thought wrong!
I imagine people watching new episodes probably have that name superseding the other one, though. Actually, maybe this is an age thing and anyone that grew up with broadband and streaming sees him as Satoshi.

It's also that until this generation the names were often silly puns and wordplay in both languages, but they never were overly brazen or referential, stuff that makes people reject localization

 No.101106

>>101100
It's partly the "aired on 90s television" syndrome, partly that the games are the main media and don't have dual-language options, and partly that the fanbase is so wide you can't enforce the normal rules outside of small, isolated groups. Ash isn't in the games, so it's fair to use the name he's called in the version of the show you're watching, but it's completely unreasonable to expect people to memorize an alternate name for each of the hundred-fifty to a thousand something monsters that doesn't even have understandable wordplay to help.

I played Emerald when I was a kid. I reached the Elite Four with none of my Pokemon even at level 40. I was stuck on the Elite Four for a very long time.
Fun times.

 No.101109

Did the VA retire or something?

It's a kids show and game so it makes sense that it airs in English and they would change some things. English kids would be unable to understand many of the names like the one you mentioned. I actually like some of the localised names, not all of them but I prefer Vaporeon over Showers. In general I seem to dislike English character names but not the Pokemon names.

 No.101118

Something I really like Pokémon is their designs, in general. They're colorful and bright, simple but cool, and very varied. A palm tree, an ice golem, some flying fetus, a frog ninja, a landshark, a glyph, a sleepy blobtank, and I imagine you immediately know which ones I'm talking about. Like, it can be a keyring of all things and still manage to be neat. Good stuff.

Part of it is also that Pokemon is principally a game series, and game localization are generally respected more than those of anime, in large part because they tend to be better. This trickles down into the anime, where we use the localized names for consistency's sake.

>The games get a LOT of various ROMhacks.
I just started playing a hack called Rejuvenation and well, it is holding my fascination more than the gen9 game is actually, even though I even bought the physical version.

As a kid I loved Sugimori watercolors, as an adult I think the trading cards have way better art than in the old days, other than the Team Rocket set.

impressive, Gen3 had some pretty challenging leaders compared to some of the others if I remember right.

 No.101156

Never watched the anime, and stopped caring much about the games after the setting left Japan which marks its transition to 3D era.
Pokemon designs from recent gens suck. Too complicated and not cute enough. The only game came out recently I like is the Gen4 remake and I won't follow anything afterwards (except pokegirls).
ROMhacks are good but almost all of them are Gen3, so my point about modern games stands.

There are some good deigns from later Gens.

The problem is that because the franchise has gone for so long they have to create wackier Pokemon to differentiate them from older ones and that ends up making worse Pokemon.

Game localizations are largely terrible, but they're typically more accepted because there's usually a practical purpose to doing it and because they're meant for broader audiences who are less likely to have opinions on translation ethics.

i don't have the means nor the interest to play the newer games (i.e anything after the 5th gen), but the first 3 generations have a very special place in my heart. especially pokémon crystal and emerald which are games i'll treasure forever. pic related is one of my favorite pokémon designs.
the emerald OST is very nostalgic for me, listening to songs like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfARFF9S5Jg almost makes me tear up, knowing i'll never get to experience Hoenn for the first time again. ;_;

My main complaint was horrible translation for items. Like, "increases your defense by 5" would actually be an accessory that increases your chance to evade magic by 5% or something like that. It happened too often, but you just lived with it and accepted it as part of playing video games.

I have to go with the original stuff as the max nostalgia for me. We know now (or I guess have for a while) that a lot of the songs were, uhh, strong "homages" to existing songs, particular the route and cycling songs, but I think a lot of the biggest themes that Pokemon became known for are original

It depends on the publisher and the era. Nintendo-published games from ~1990 onward typically have very good, or at least very well written, localizations, censorship aside.

I really love Gen 2’s soundtrack too, especially this one. Johto is such a relaxing region, I love coming back and fully immersing myself in it. If I had to pick somewhere to live in Pokemon for all of eternity it would be somewhere in Johto.

You know what's dumb? (or maybe smart?)
They only have Seasons 1 and 2 on the Switch's Pokemon video service thing, and then it jumps straight to season 10. Is there some licensing issue somewhere? It doesn't seem like there should be, but I can't think of any other reason. These would be seasons I never saw as a kid, so I'm quite interested, but at the same time I don't want to watch them when I'm not in bed.

The last episode of Ash's story has aired. Well, I have trouble thinking it's the last we've seen of him.
Now that it's finished, I'm very tempted to binge however long the nostalgia bait part was. Does anyone know if it was the whole season or just the past 5 or so episodes?
I looked at the Pokemon thing on Switch and there's still a massive gap of seasons 3-10. I'd love to watch those in bed, and yes it's a dub, but I associate their English voices with my youth so it's kind of hard to bypass.

I thought about making a thread for this, but then I remembered that this thread existed.
I've been watching the old Pokemon anime with the English dub that I remember watching as a kid. It's pretty good. Some of its localization stuff is infamous of course (jelly donuts!) but it's really quite charming. I kind of wish this collection I got off nyaa (which is REALLY nice) had optional subs derived from the original Japanese so I could compare them, but I don't really have any major complaints knowing that it's going to be aimed at kids in the 90s that don't know anything about Japan.
Speaking about the nyaa release, it has the episodes that are missing from regular broadcasts. It even has the Porygon episode famous for causing seizures! Bulbapedia has stories on them like https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/EP018
Interestingly most of this beach episode is dubbed despite it never getting an official release on TV or whatever, but the infamous parts that lead to it never being on TV only have Japanese audio and it seemlessly switches to it with this nyaa release (really this is such a great collection).

Yeah, there was no way this was going to fly on a kid's show in the US in the 90s. Hah.

After playing Palworld and watching these shows I'm getting the urge to play Pokemon again, but not a plain one. I think I want to play a good hack of something. Has anyone here played that fangame PC one called Pokemon Infinity or whatever it was? How does it compare to regular games?

The most fun I've had with pokemon is downloading a romhack that makes it so that your pokemon don't get exp, it basically turns the game into an SMT game where you have to strategize a lot more since you can't grind to win. I've been wondering... why did Brock leave the anime for a bit? It doesn't make much sense to me. Did the Japanese voice actor become busy or something? He's such a good character and his replacement was so generic.

>>119727
Hmm... well, that's not much of a description but it's a recommendation!

>>119743
That sounds pretty fun. It is a bit lame that the most effective way to play Pokemon is generally to have one Pokemon that you level up, but the XP share stuff at least made it a bit more varied. I generally hovered around 4-5 of them when I play. I think Pokemon kind of has to play it safe with some stuff and that's where rom hacks or fan games come in.

I'm seeing new episodes I've never seen before and I have to say that I really do love this dub. It's very charming. I know it will inevitably lower in quality and it will switch voice actors, but the voices are just so fun right now. Wobbuffet in particular cracks me up, but the other classic characters are still great as well. The original Japanese Pokemon names just don't exist to me-- a weird relic from earlier times.
(There's some weird thing with Handbrake going back one frame and messing up the very first frame in these captures of mine...)
