It's part of the webring which was itself assembled from the remnants of 8chan after it died. I think smug has direct origin to a board on 8chan, but I'm not a part of it so I can't say for certainty. I just read some of their meta threads over the years.

smug was around at the same time as 8/a/, run by the same people, and used as a bunker for when 8chan was down. It was also where r/a/dio threads were hosted.
if there's a post-shooting 8chan up at 8kun or 8chan.moe or whatever, I don't believe its /a/ board has any relation to smug

i voted 8chan because i still miss 8cham=n... its not exactly a rational thing... the webring is mostly an 8chan exodus in the first place, so smug really counts as webring first and foremost

I usually sleep in the nude too, but sometimes on colder days the extra warmth from having a soft layer over your cold feet can be quite a cozy feeling!
