I was looking at wapchan today to see how the popularity's been treating figamin, and I just noticed the adorable and lovely to look at new homepage. It's got the forum look down to a T, but probably even better because of all the little additions and whatnot to make it looks more professional than the normal slapped-together forums are. The random quote at the top being typed out is a treat to stare at. Really, it makes me think we need to get a redesign of the kissu homepage to make it look more presentable as well. Think it really adds to the credibility of a site to have it looking as good as possible.

Looks nice.

Just my weird sense of style, but I grew up with a bunch of tinyboard sites so when I open kissu.moe and see the lazy (old kissu) homepage I feel a weird sense of comfort. It's a form of minimalism to just have it default and let the community speak for itself.

Look at this beauty! (´・ω・`)

This isn't a voice against it or anything by the way, just me looking back to the previous decade.

The Kissu homepage does look pretty empty, kind of like a placeholder you didn't care to change because it's "good enough". I like Wap's new design, too, but it's hard for me to come up with ideas that would really fit Kissu and not just be random. I assume in Wap's case the forum design is intended to underline the "retro" aspect, referencing older anime fan forums.
Maybe something amateurish Geocities-like for Kissu, but in a way that looks intentional and therefore professional despite the design? The star background we have always reminded me of old Geocities pages.

I typed the following before realizing you're only referring to the actual homepage and not Kissu as a whole, but I will keep it here just in case Anons would like to discuss other aspects as well:
I personally like the original Futaba style the best, the one that is still used by them to this day, which is why I'm glad that Kissu at least uses a side menu on the modern UI. I bet there's a not insignificant amount of people that disagree and think it's ugly, most likely more modern users that grew up with the current 4chan design or modern websites from this or the last decade. I'm not the biggest fan of Kissu's design as a whole, but I definitely don't think it's bad and it's just something I don't really think about in one way or another - not that there is any right or wrong here anyway.

I am fine with very simple designs. Is a website, not an art gallery.

I stopped visiting the vocaloid board after it "upgraded" to this
If you think the tone is harsh, this is because I'm very much against imageboards looking like they're trying to compensate for something orbappeal to the kind of people who are forum-oriented
Anonymous message boards aren't forums for what forums are as a phenomenon.

¥ but actually the definitions and terminology-...
You're not ready for this thought.

Wapchan was always styled in the vein of old forums, so I don't see how the complaint carries any weight towards the choices figamin made. If you compare the old style to the new, it's simply a direct upgrade. And kissu's homepage is too cluttered and hasn't really been looked at for years now, I think it's due for a bit of a redesign. Not in the same style, but in a way that makes it a bit more compact.

There's nothing like that in the post. I didn't end up using wap much in the first place.

Both the current and old frontpage were made by the 39chan guy. 39chan also has a very forum-like design.

It nails the aesthetic it goes for but I don't really care for it, it's jarring to go from an old forum homepage to an altchan layout when you're actually browsing
Also separating recent posts and recent images is very stupid, these should always go together as one is meaningless without the other
>>5235
I appreciate how over the years newgrounds never really lost sight of what the website was for, you're always shown indie animations and indie games you can click on right away

This is just how that function works in tinyboard/vichan so it's not necessarily a choice they deliberately made, but you're right they could change it with some small template changes. I think the main reason it's made like this originally is because a ton of people post without images so it would just have like one image if you're lucky and a bunch of "no image". Alternatively a bunch of images with "no text" written next to it for image dumps which seems just as pointless. I don't know what would be worse. The default in tinyboard is something like 3 or 5 images and like 15 text snippets separated in boxes side by side with no relation to the images and the text.

Kissu's old UI homepage is about the same, but top down with a lot more images.

I fear and hate and dislike changes so usually it has to be a very good change to outweigh the stress of newness

This thread prompted me to think about Kissu's onboarding experience (excuse the techbro vocab; I can't think of a more human alternative) as a 2019 newfriend, but I'm currently too drunk to structure a longpost.
Please look forward to it tomorrow(?) if I don't chicken out of it.

Clickable buttons, no designated ad space columns taking up all the space across the entire axis, no cancer trend design of "this may or may not be clickable space around the big link text with stylistically designated space for it"

This term should not even be monopolized to techbros. Sometimes no onboarding suggests you'll get raped as soon as you enter the territory. I'm only slightly exaggerating

The main issue with working on the homepage is that you only see it once. It's hard to justify spending time on it, at least in my mind.
I am eternally procrastinating about doing CSS stuff on kissu, but it's for board themes and not a homepage. Does anyone here look at the homepage except when installing a new browser or something?

To be fair there's more "stuff" to do on the wapchan homepage:
- You can listen to the radio
- You can cycle through the quotes by clicking on it
- You can see the latest news
- You can see both the latest posts/images and oekaki at the same time
- There's a ton of links to various parts of the site not listed elsewhere, such as the uptime monitor
It's not much, but it's something. Also, wapchan's homepage has a lot of extra stats you can't find elsewhere on the site (such as board post totals not including deleted posts)

You know that like kissu, wapchan also hosts old working versions of the homepage, right?
https://wapchan.org/oldhome.html was the style up until recent
https://wapchan.org/olderhome.html is a lot closer to default vichan

Yes. Both are too cluttered for my tastes, but I never liked how the site felt so it's not a loss for me
I now visit only to complete the captchas without posting anything

They do discuss some oldish anime franchises I like though...
