Another point is that ZUN also makes a lot of characters connect to the main characters in some way and while there can potentially be pretty good material like with Enoko and Marisa, unfortunately, there are already too many characters connected to Reimu or Marisa to make them stand out much.
He didn't commit this mistake by having Yuuma be personally connected to Ran instead. The dialogue between the two in UDoaLG reminds me of Vicious and Spike in Ballad of Fallen Angels. It adds a lot to both characters.
