I need to get a CRT one of these days... maybe. I have bad memories of moving them around so it's a bit less appealing than seeing them in screenshots. Doubt I could get ones as big as the ones I had without paying a premium. Kind of ironic.

I wonder if ZUN has any plans to ever bring Mima or Shinki, back. He clearly hasn't forgotten about Makai after it appeared again in UFO, so maybe he's just thinking of when would be a good time to have them make a grand return.

NTA, but I feel that pain. We threw out my 2 perfectly good CRT monitors in 2013 or so when I was blinded by the novelty of owning my first widescreen. For my TV I got lucky that I was never interested in spending money to replace it, so I kept it around the entire time.

I got a CRT monitor just last year and I believe the shipping costs were "only" around 20 bucks or so, though with that said, the seller didn't even do the bare minimum and the monitor was just put into a random box with - no joke - zero padding except for the entire roll of tape on the outside and 4 plastic straps. It miraculously survived the trip and the only thing that broke were the plastic pins that snap the base to the screen, which I actually broke myself during unpacking because the seller also didn't detach the base before shipping.

I want to be positive and say that's the case, but it's more likely that he has actually forgotten about PC-98 in general.
The Makai as shown in UFO seems to have no connection to the PC-98 Makai (HRtP nor MS).

And considering how he reacted to Mima being in LW (i.e he didn't even seem to recognize her) he genuinely might have forgotten about those characters.
It is sad though, Shinki's design is probably my favorite, and her character has a lot of potential, much like Mima.

He won't. Mima specifically was a perfect fit for IN, probably the most fitting possible choice given her existing lunar connection, and she was sidelined for Alice.
It's best to accept that PC98 was a testing grounds for ideas and not really something ZUN feels obligated to revisit. He'll occasionally indulge in some PC98 fan service but considering even Yuuka, who is explicitly part of Windows canon, is mostly ignored, I wouldn't expect any other pc98 hus to pop up.

It doesn't in terms of appearance, sure, but Byakuren using a spellcard which is an exact copy of Shinki's main "spellcard" (let's call it "main", since her final pattern is just for cooldown) is a very strong reference to PC98 Makai.

had the idea to try setting up a CRT TV as a second monitor for a PC setup, then that way I can have a second monitor but also play games on it to see what it'd look and feel like since on my current laptop I play a lot of old games because I can't run anything better
I also hear one of the good things about a CRT is you get zero latency which is why so many classic video games feel hard as balls because modern hardware just has too much of a minor delay between input and what's on screen that those old games weren't designed around... wonder if it would make Touhou easier?

It's a 19 inch one (standard size, I believe?) and I used to use it daily as secondary monitor for a game, but I've since stopped playing and now only use it for older games on my other PC, which I also stopped using because my plans for setting up a complete environment became too grand and now it feels like a chore.. I will get back to that at some point though, hopefully!
