A long holiday! I also have a few friends that live in Tokyo.
I am changing j*bs so I have a lot of time off. During the last week, I have been annoying all kinds of service workers by trying to speak to them in terribly broken Japanese, only for them to respond in somewhat less broken English. I have also been going to the arcades to play rhythm games a lot because we don't have those where I am from. Obviously most of the day is spent looking at things.

I am serious by the way. I will be back in Tokyo for the last few days of the month before going home, so if anyone wants to meet up (IN PUBLIC) that would be a good time.

Oh neat! I get there early afternoon, need some time to get settled in the airbnb but I can probably go out to snack on stuff in the evening and/or play rhythm games (I enjoy em quite a lot too). If you drink, there's a 2hu bar in Osaka I'd love to visit before leaving.

The baseball game starts at 18:00 (at Kyocera Dome) and that can take anywhere between two hours and forever, so before that would probably be good. The day after I don't have any detailed plan yet so most times would be fine.

Hum, after rechecking my schedule it looks like I'll only just be making it to my room at around 16:30, day after may be best so you can enjoy your ball game without worries.

Are you traveling solo? What do you even do when going abroad by yourself? I have toyed with idea of going to Japan alone but I figured it would get boring being all by myself for 2-3 weeks, and I don't know anybody down there, and I'm not the social type who can just start chatting with complete strangers. I would love to drink at the 2hu bars but going to a pub alone just sounds depressing. I was in Denmark (mostly) by myself once and frankly I was just looking forward to going home during my stay there.

I'd guess they made up plans for things to visit and have no problems being out and talking with people... or something.
But yeah i wouldn't be able to travel alone either. I'm far too shy and would probably not even make it out of my hotel room the entire time, even if i had things i really wanted to visit...

Yup! Helps that I've done so before, though taking trains and subways and public transport of this level in general was a first for me. Held onto Google Maps like it was a bible, and quickly learned that Japan is a very visual place. Looking around is your best bet if you ever feel lost, because there WILL be signs and arrows relevant to literally everything you're doing.

I can't think of any culture more different to my own than Japan's, so I was always interested in visiting. Had a few key locations and shops I scheduled out for visiting, but other than that I've been winging it a lot, especially when it comes to food. You don't have to be a super social person to survive in Japan! One of my favorite things though has been braving the walk into those small spots in alleyways after deciding the food on their sign looked yummy. I'm by no means knowledgeable enough to maintain a proper conversation in Japanese, but you can get very far with just a few key words, broken grammar, and pointing if all else fails. A lot of people in the big cities know some amount of English anyway.

You can literally start by searching something like "cool things to do in Japan" to get some ideas on what you might be interested in. Shrines, parks, food places, sports events, bars, concerts, hiking routes, buying tons of porn, taking pictures of trains... I like to think of stuff I wouldn't get to see/do/taste/get back home as my biggest guide. Hell, I even feel like having my first trip alone instead of in a group was the way to go, because I didn't want to feel pressured or pressure others into having to do stuff some might not be interested in. Can take it very easy this way.

I also didn't really want to tour around Japan (mostly) by myself, but this seemed like an opportunity that wouldn't come up again for years and I assumed that I'd regret it otherwise. I am trying to say yes to more things in general.

I didn't really plan things ahead of time, just picked a few cities that seemed neat. Obviously this is not really smart and results in a lot of time just walking around or taking trains, but so far I've been enjoying it.

 No.115022

Managed to survive the night. Ate at a place near the Glico sign, not too crowded and they had some really yummy gyoza. Also highballs for under a dollar each. Kind of a touristy spot, but it is a cool walk at night if you haven't seen it already.

There's a Taito Station in Namba too if you'd rather do something during the day. I've not really set any plans, though going by a few shrines seems cool too.
