If you're able to relax doing nothing in hot water and cleansing your mind then you'll love an Onsen. If you can't sit still and find relaxation to be a waste of resources if you're not actively engaging in some other activity, and you're unable to find any appreciation for the nature around you, then you probably won't gain much out of it if you stew in the water grumbling about how it's not what you expected.

I think it's just the general idea of relaxing around scenic beauty. The water itself isn't special, although some people would you tell you there's ancient minerals that heal the body or something else silly.
Most people these days live in ugly urban areas so it's being around nature itself or buildings built to look good instead of cheap and functional is quite the treat.
Sigh... I want to live in a forest or mountainous area so badly instead of seeing a bunch of houses and commercial buildings.
