Saying "Reimu is poor" is fine because it's established that her shrine doesn't get many visitors so she's lacking in donations as a consequence. From there jokes crop up about her being greedy, and that's where anons banter over whether her greedy nature is accurate or if they're lies and exaggerations propped up by Moriya or Kasen, all in good fun. Where I get annoyed is when this balloons into "Reimu is a slut who whores herself out for a quick buck" because at that point all of her other traits are ignored in favor of making kuso up to stir the pot. I don't expect everyone to agree with what I wrote and it's not my intent to police what people can or can't post about fictional characters, but I prefer lighthearted banter over slut this, whore that.

At most people just call them old and smelly.

It started with voice dramas (

And in general it can be said that cookie is a derivative work of a derivative work... this is why it's said to be touhou adjacent rather than being touhou fan creations, it's quite far removed.
At that point in Japanese internet history 音MADs, gachimuchi/Inmu, and others were popular so they got mixed in.
There was a lot of drama after the original VD came out because it was supposed to be "fully animated" and the head of the project used it to harass the female artists who worked on it, not to mention that some of them got doxed. This didn't only happen to people who worked on the original though, it happened to quite a few in the community.
There were a lot of people who jumped on cookie because they wanted to get popular on the Japanese internet.
Honestly I could write a bunch more paragraphs about this and still only scratch the surface, not to mention that most of it is basically inaccessible for most, considering how little of it has been translated.
In short it's an absolute shitfest, and I love it.
