How come there aren't any? I've always found it a little odd that there are no blind girls in Touhou especially considering how prevalent blind people have tended to be in Japanese media throughout the years, and especially with how they are usually treated in Japanese folklore. I understand that Okina is a Goddess of disabilities, among many other things, so maybe she'd technically fit in, but I've always felt like blindness in particular has always stood out so much in eastern media that it wouldn't really make sense to generalize it with other disabilities.

I'm not sure how a blind Youkai would survive Gensokyo if Reimu found out about such easy prey. I mean spellcard battles would require at least a bit of sight right? Would be next to impossible to hold one blind...

Just doesn't fit into his character aesthetics I guess. Can you think of an yokai which would fit the blind archetype? I can't.

Have you seen how some of them dress? Well...

Gotta ba a bat youkai with echolocation.

You could say that, but in turn you could also turn it into a cool gimmick where they're able to do danmaku despite being blind, and may even have other methods of locating you, be it echolocation like >>108112 said, good hearing, or some other religious/ability-related skill.

I could definitely see Hecatia having some sort of godlike sensing ability instead of eyesight...

I mean, it is an interesting question, I guess wait for ZUN to finally add a Tenome 2hu and see how he handles it.
Actually might be interesting to get a Itako as well, given that the practice has nearly died out in modern Japan it'd be a shockingly good fit for Gensokyo.

>>108109
I mean as much as we like our crimson slasher memes, Reimu isn't the type to just murder a youkai for the sake of it.
I mean she will but not if it's a cute girl.
No, Orange was not killed in LLS. If you take bants that seriously then canonically Sakuya and the Prismriver Sisters are also dead(er in the case of the sisters).

>>108110
Actually I think a cute blind girl could work rather well. It certainly isn't outside of the realm of what a 2hu can be.

To further add to this, danmaku is all about beauty, right? Don't you think it'd be really interesting to see what a blind person's definition of "beauty" would be in a danmaku battle? I'm surprised ZUN hasn't tackled this yet.

Oh I just realised that not only did I forget to remove my name from those 2 posts but also that I didn't mean to fill out the Name field in the OP to begin with and instead wanted to write in Subject. God damnit I am so fucking clumsy today.

>Tenome
Actually, I had one of those blind buddhist monks in mind. The ones who played biwas. Or Zatoichi, but that feels a little on-the-nose and we already have two... no, three? Sword wielders.

I don't think we'll get a blind swordsman, if only because it'd be stepping on Youmu's toes so far as gimmicks go and ZUN doesn't seem to enjoy going for big cliches like that very often (probably why we still don't actually have a kunoichi 2hu yet despite being one of the most obvious directions you could take a human 2hu). There are a ton of ideas he could explore in regards to blindness that I'm sure haven't been mentioned in this thread yet, yeah. I guess I'm just a little surprised that he hasn't actually done it yet.

>I don't think we'll get a blind swordsman
Yeah me neither, I sort of just said it out-loud as a throwaway idea, more of an example of a popular representation of blindness in Japanese media, if anything.

My thoughts exactly, it's really surprising. Biwa hoshis, tenomes, itakos... plenty of ideas to go around.

Many ideas, but what would her backstory be and how would she be involved in an incident?

It's a bit unfair to ask without knowing what the incident is, isn't it? It can go anywhere from "main culprit" to "random cocky youkai Reimu decided to beat up".

Also here's a doujin with a blind Yuuka, thought it was cute: https://danbooru.donmai.us/pools/14967

If it's a blind youkai I'd imagine it'd probably be a stage 1 or 2 small fry, that feels like the sort of padding "mostly unrelated to the plot" 2hu ZUN would throw into an early stage.
If she's an Itako specifically, I could see her easily being an important part of the plot, either falling into your classic "Stage 5 servant of the final boss" archetype or a sort of "the real mastermind but you're fighting them early because you need to take down a bigger threat to actually resolve things" archetype like Orin or Seija. Maybe she saw an omen that prompted the main antagonist to start whatever incident the player is trying to resolve, or she could be using her position to pull the strings from the background.
