Today there was a strong wind that chased clouds back and forth. I was walking through a downpour in one moment, then the Sun shone before I could get truly drenched; this repeated many times, over and over again. Perhaps it was just the general mood, or maybe, by some coincidence, sounds similar to the first few notes appeared, slipping beneath my conscious mind. Whatever the reason was, Tengu's Notebook ~ Mysterious Note started playing in my mind. Normally, when I hear it in StB menu, I often picture Aya walking through the rain, somewhat carefree, somewhat confident, with a moment of clearing, when the static disappears near the end. It fits spring showers much more than autumn rains or summer storms.
This led me to thinking on the four "main" themes from StB, whether they could be seen as seasonal. Retrospective Kyoto certainly fits for winter, in part by ZUN's comment on it, but also the gentle nostalgia in it fits snow dropping down on a windless night. Wind Circulation ~ Wind Tour could fit spring, especially those later piano parts; it's lively without being straight up energetic or intense, like nature in general waking up after winter. ZUNpets are veering on too aggressive for spring mood, though.
It would produce a nice progression if Tengu is Watching ~ Black Eyes was summer's representative and Sleepless Night of the Eastern Country was autumn's, but I am not sure about this one. In the former, heavy ZUNpets that hammer the tension could feel like sweltering sun, and Royal Diamond Ring further inspires such interpretation, but I could see an argument for autumn's increasingly hostile weather being captured in the tune, too. More importantly, the light-footed nature of Sleepless Night of the Eastern Country sure fits more active summer night than colder autumn ones; on the one hand chasing time before dawn comes, on the other short enough to be truly sleepless. Maybe the early parts of autumn, with wind and colorful leaves frolicking? But this feels like a stretch.
Despite appearing only once, Wind God Girl would happen to be doyou, I think. All four pieces are for various situations Aya finds herself in, it's only natural that her own theme would represent the connection between all of those circumstances.
