Genuine question: How do you people come up with ideas?
I've been drawing for a while and still my biggest problem is "what to draw?".
99% of the time I can't come up with anything and so I settle for drawing from a reference, which is just not that fun at this point.

I guess that could work, though I'm afraid of losing interest in a project that I've started and not finishing it.
It has happened to me a couple of times where I got the greatest idea and then after like a day or two of working on it I realize that it's not that great and now what?
Should I slog through and force myself to finish it?
Should I abandon it and hope the next project won't turn out like that?

The overwhelming majority of drawings I've made I finished in a day, although they're not exceptional.
Maybe try to make simpler(time-wise) drawings in that mold until you can think of ideas you are sure will work, I don't know.

doubt there's a one-size-fits-all solution to this, I have many more ideas than I end up drawing because it feels like I wouldn't do em justice
things just come to mind if I'm bored enough, like "oh it'd be kinda cute to see X character doing this or that", there isn't much thought put into it most of the time. overall I can start drawing after 1. picking a character and 2. picking something to incorporate into it, it could be a pose, a theme, or a literal thing

In that case maybe you just need to do more things that break your normal habits. Maybe pick up a new game or anime or something and or try looking at things from a more critical point of view to activate those neurons.

everyone has their own pain points! I find it damn near impossible to even curve a line the way I imagine it in my head, so seeing people put together an outline without hitting ctrl+z a thousand times and praying feels like wizardry each and every time
I guess this is getting more into why you draw, but is there anything stopping you from doing simpler drawings like someone else suggested? not every drawing has to be a complex or grand illustration, the hardest part for me (and from conversations I've had, plenty of others) is picking up the pencil/mouse/stylus and actually starting, it's stopped me from drawing for near months at a time before
at the end of the day even if I'm not 100% satisfied with something, I'll often open up a picture after sleeping on it and think it's pretty neat that my hands somehow managed to whip that up, I can't think of many other things that give me that same feeling

>but is there anything stopping you from doing simpler drawings like someone else suggested
Simply the fact that I don't enjoy them.
I decided to draw the last two drawings as fast as I could, I drew both in like half-an-hour, but I didn't really enjoy them.
The fact that drawing quick also means that I can't color it also sucks as that is one of the most enjoyable parts of the process.
When I have a good idea, I like to take my time with it until it looks good.

>the hardest part for me (and from conversations I've had, plenty of others) is picking up the pencil/mouse/stylus
Like I said the hardest part for me is to think of something to draw, once I got that everything else is effortless.

>I'll often open up a picture after sleeping on it and think it's pretty neat
It's either that or you look at it and realize it's even worse than yesterday, at least that's been my experience.

>Would you mind elaborating on that?
I've been on a mission lately to try and improve my analysis skills and appreciation of media and the things around me so I've been trying to find ways to discern what is and isn't good. I think I have a fairly nice baseline understanding and taste for what I like, but when it comes to understanding the works of others I've taken to trying to think about the purpose for which they wrote and also how much of an effect it carries over to myself. If there's a system in a game I want to figure out why I like that system. If there's a moment in an anime I like I want to ask myself and write down what about that specific scene sent my neurons firing. And if I want to enjoy tearing into a piece of crap that doesn't try to do anything or just executes so poorly it offends me I'll write all about it in various rants. The last one being the easiest because for some reason I can always figure out why I hate something vs why I enjoy it. Keeping this mindset has helped me to see endless media consumption through the light of improving myself and a journey of exploration through the minds and thoughts of others more than just a mind-numbing activity that keeps me from killing myself.

 No.107639

>>107637
You might be onto something here.
When I like a piece of media, I struggle to say why I like it.
I have actually tried something like that but I just fail at the first step, when I ask myself why I like something it's either "I don't know" or it's really generic like "I like the story" or "I like the characters" but then you go deeper and I can't answer things like "but why do I like the story/characters" at all...
