 No.91605[Last50 Posts]

We're in the home stretch of catching up on shows with sequels coming out in the Summer season!
Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen's first 13 episodes will be streamed this Friday, and the final 12 episodes + Bonus will be next Friday, both at my usual streaming time of 6PM EST/11PM UTC!
For those who may be new to this, kissu has an anonymous-supporting fork of cytube and the channel we're using for this is:

Utawarerumono is a trilogy close to my heart, so much so that I can type it by memory!
Grand story, amazing characters, beautiful art, atmospheric music (RIP Mameda ;_;) and the gameplay in 2 and 3 are actually pretty great if you ask me. I'm going into the anime adaptation blind, however, but if it's half as good as the VN then you're in for a treat.
This is technically season 2, but it's not too strongly related to season 1 which had released a decade earlier. The VNs also share a similar gap in release dates. I'll see if I can find a relevant summary somewhere, though, if people are going in blind.

I will warn you ahead of time if you're someone that avoids conflict in media then this isn't for you. It's a world at war and it also has some really sad moments in it that aren't directly related to war. But, there is also lots of slice of life moments and positive emotions of comradely and romance in it.

File:020_AMADUYU_TATSUKI_ART_WO….jpg (3.01 MB,4846x6958)

I'll just be posting random Utawarerumono things in here now and then I think.
I'll upload art books and soundtracks to the filesharing thread later

AAAAAAAAAAA I'm gonna need to speed run the games.

File:3-08 郷愁・壱.flac (7.55 MB)

Hmm, the third one is what the summer and fall season is going to be, so 1 and 2 together are only about 150-200 hours

File:00191.jpg (712.61 KB,1356x1920)

Actually, I think I'll have to delay posting the art books. Well, I guess I COULD, but the art depicts characters and events from the third VN so it'd be massive spoilers.
Hmm... I think the lyrics of the songs might be, too, if you understand enough Japanese.
I guess selective uploading is the thing to do for now.

VN and turn-based strategy game. Most of the time is spent reading, but the game part adds a decent chunk of time.
It's really fun, though, I really like how the units differentiate from each other. Not very difficult in the story (especially with the Rewind button), but the optional stuff can be.

Yeah, I left off somewhere after a few battles in after dealing with the one lord guy in the first game.

it may not be the anime focused on in the stream but i really like the op for the first anime

File:00130.jpg (288.17 KB,1356x1920)

All the music is great. Even the smartphone (bleh!) stuff is good.

File:00131.jpg (279.57 KB,1356x1920)

The concept art is...

File:00132.jpg (240.85 KB,1356x1920)

...quite thorough

File:00043.jpg (297.78 KB,1356x1920)

Huh, I guess she is.
Atuy was my favorite character gameplay-wise, she could move fast, kill someone, and it would trigger her ability which let her act one more time on a kill. (once per turn)

Tonight is (non-spoiler) Kuon night!

Okay, so to summarize the original Utawarerumono...

It's a sort of hybrid world of Feudal Japan and medieval Europe and other parts of Asia. The people have cute animal ears and tails.

The protagonist, Hakuowlo wakes up in a village with a mask he can't remove and he has amnesia and everyone notices that he has no animal parts. Through a series of events leads his village and then country to war against others. He learns over the course of the story that he's actually supremely important. He was a scientist in an advanced, futuristic civilization and merged with a dark god after stumbling upon his burial area. Said god gives Faustian bargains to people and the scientist made a wish to stay alive or something. He had some mental break about not wanting to do it, splitting into two separate beings. The original game is an eroge and he had sex with EVERYONE, which is actually important to remember.

File:015.jpg (966.16 KB,1410x2000)

Near the end of the game with all lands conquered and peace being restored, there is a happy ending... or not. The dark god part of the split orchestrated a reunification. To prevent the dark god from being free and cursing humanity with, uhhh, more curses, the party reluctantly seals Hakuowlo away at his command.

Now I'll try to explain the characters since I got the gist of things out of the way... kind of.

File:016.jpg (852.58 KB,1410x2000)

Eru (top) and Aru (bottom)

At some point, the scientist guy (Hakuowlo/God Fusion) was frozen. Maybe the merge took a long time or something?
Anyway, a new group of scientists dug him up. He was called the Iceman since he was found frozen underground or in a cave somewhere. The scientists were searching for a way to strengthen humanity and were partaking in many cruel experiments. Humans were too weak to live on the surface. One scientist helped Iceman escape along with some other animal people, including one he fell in love with named Mikoto that looks a little bit like Eru. The circular hair ornament in Eru's hair is a keepsake, but it's in actuality a key to that laboratory.
After enough time passed for Hawowlo and Mikoto to have a child... they are captured by the scientists. They... *sigh*
Mikoto and child are dissected 'Made in Abyss' style because she was an animal ears person that successfully reproduced (with Hakuowlo).
After learning this, Hakuwlo/God becomes enraged and awakens to his god powers which he had previously "forgotten"? He grants mankind's wish for strength by giving them bodies that won't die, but they become mindless red blobs of slime. Human Hakuowlo has an inner monologue for someone to stop him. <-- remember this part
Chronologically, right before the beginning of the game before Hakuowlo wakes up with amnesia it's revealed that Hakuowlo revived Aru from death, but the cost was that Eru became his, body and soul.
Eru and Hakuowlo essentially become a couple by the end of the game. Is it real love or mind slavery? Eru thinks it's real love, but it's up to interpretation. Maybe the God's curse on her was broken at some point?
Aru started to see Hakuwlo as a father figure very early on.
Hawkowlo the merged but benevolent God at the end of the game promises Eru and Aru that they'll meet again someday.

Man, that took a while to write. I kept remembering new stuff and I even opened up some episodes to confirm some things.

File:006.jpg (889.12 KB,1410x2000)

Well, this one won't be long since I don't remember much.
Yuzuha and Oboro.
Oboro is very protective of his deathly ill sister, whom Hakuowlo regularly visits throughout the story. Finally, he pleads for him to grant her wish. Her wish is to have a child that can explore the world. This isn't a dark god wish, just a human to human plea. As mentioned it was an eroge so he certainly tries.

Also Oboro has two apprentice boy ninjas that follow him around that really, really want to do gay stuff with him. I don't remember if it's confirmed if they do or not. This isn't important to the story, but it's good to know.

File:013.jpg (726.19 KB,1410x2000)

Camyu/Camus/whatever else people translate it as

"Normal" angel girl with a dark secret. Camyu as a regular person isn't particularly noteworthy apart from being a nice cute girl (with MASSIVE boobers)
She's the reincarnation/host of Natsumi, a creature that arose as an experiment with Iceman's DNA. It's some sort of bodyless, inherited existence that can manifest within a family line. She sees Hakuowlo as her father and is immensely loyal to him. However, she's kind of emotionless and takes things literally. When Hakuowlo wished for someone to stop his Godly rampage against the humans in the distant past, she tried to kill him but was unable to do so and sealed him away. I don't remember how the seal was broken or why there started to be two halves of Hakuowlo/God, but I think it's related to this.
However, post-human/god split Natsumi sees the dark god half as the real one to be obeyed. Natsumi goes dorment at the story's conclusion and Camyu returns.

File:009.jpg (633.85 KB,759x1145)

I don't remember this woman's story apart from her being an extremely strong former slave that likes to get drunk.

File:010.jpg (200.82 KB,759x1145)

Oh yeah that woman's name is Karulau.
This woman is Touka. She's, uhh... hmm.. I remember her being really awkward, but not very story significant in the grand scheme of things.

File:014.jpg (270.86 KB,759x1145)

Benawi and Kurou. Benawi is an expert tactician and former general of an enemy faction before joining Hakuowlo and Kurou is just his really strong second in command

File:014.jpg (737 KB,1410x2000)

Ulthury is Camyu's sister.
They're both part of a neutral country that oversees the other countries and gives advice as divine mediators of the (unknown to them as evil) god.

I think this is about sums up the characters with any sort of relevance to what we're going to watch. Other stuff happens, but apart from passing references I can't remember it mattering to 2 and 3's storyline.

File:Utawarerumono.S02E06.False….jpg (Spoiler Image,249.01 KB,1920x1080)

Why are we streaming Itsuwari no Kamen? Did we already stream the other one? I thought the new season was going to be a continuation (?) of that one...

File:Utawarerumono.S02E07.False….jpg (306.43 KB,1920x1080)

>Did we already stream the other one?
We're catching up on shows that have sequels in Summer. Unfortunately, due to time constraints there wasn't any room for Utawarerumono's first season. The stories aren't heavily connected and I did my best to give a summary of the stuff that MIGHT be relevant (keeping it vague) in the thread.

>I thought the new season was going to be a continuation (?) of that one...
It's a continuation of the one being streamed right now, yeah. This one ends on a huge cliffhanger and it will lead directly into the new season.

File:Utawarerumono.S02E05.False….jpg (367.59 KB,1920x1080)

Also, I'm surprised at the pacing so far. It's keeping the general pace of a LOT of slice of life stuff early on, so while they could have compressed it more heavily they chose not to. Each episode is generally introducing one to two characters.
Very interesting.

So much slice of life to build character relations when the world is more interesting than romances, sigh...

File:Utawarerumono.S02E10.False….jpg (298.7 KB,1920x1080)

Wow. 10 episodes done and the big story still hasn't started yet.
This is pretty crazy.
Well, I must say that the slice of life/healing stuff on display is top notch. Falling in love with Utawareurmono all over again.

Dedicating probably as much time as the games do to SoL sure is something neat. I would've thought that like most VN adaptations it dives straight into the main story, but guess that was wrong.

File:Utawarerumono.S02E11.False….jpg (323.41 KB,1920x1080)

The first cour was almost entirely SoL character introductions. You could watch it on its own and you'll be spared of the serious parts. There's just a few glimpses of some bad stuff, but overall it's pure healing cuteness.
I was skeptical of the anime, but it has really shown itself to be a great adaptation, at least so far.

I just can't be bothered with the sol. I always ctrl past those sections in VNs. Interpersonal relationships are so dull compared to the personal growth of characters and the larger scheme of how society and nature create the world

File:Utawarerumono.S02E09.False….jpg (293.82 KB,1920x1080)

Hmm, well it's pretty inseparable from Utawarerumono and a big part of its charm, similar to Higurashi or really anything else that wants you to empathize with the characters. I think anyone that watched tonight's stream should have a strong liking to the characters by now, they're very lovable and the scenes were great.
It was definitely a complaint I've heard about the VNs, though, and probably not something people expected in a VN attached to a tactical game.

I just can't do it.
Shinseki Yori did it nice by giving me a constant feeling of doom and that something is wrong with their way of life, but I started tuning out of it when they were doing cute things and then the slave girls showed up to rub his crotch and I just didn't really care anymore until episode 13 showed up

File:Utawarerumono.S02E13.False….jpg (153.56 KB,1920x1080)

Well, I guess you could jump into the sequel in summer then since that's when the higurashi start crying

File:00214.jpg (Spoiler Image,672.65 KB,1356x1920)

Dumping VN art of the scenes we saw in episodes 1-13.
Although it's SoL stuff/character introductions I'll still put it behind spoilers

File:00215.jpg (Spoiler Image,523.34 KB,1356x1920)

well I guess this one isn't SoL but it happens in the first 3 minutes

looks like it's from a fan book

File:Utawarerumono.S02e09.False….mp4 (5.1 MB,1280x720)

I know I'm 95% of the posts in the thread, but I just want to say again how much I enjoyed these first episodes. One of the ways I can gauge my enjoyment into media is if I forget that about the real one, and I did.
Utawarerumono is such a beautiful world, and its characters, art and music truly immerse you into it.

File:00296.jpg (667.79 KB,1356x1920)

It's from the Utawarerumono [long Japanese names] Official Visual Collection, yeah.

the episodes we watched really piqued my interest, think I'll watch season 1 before next week

File:explorer_TmL17dFshk.jpg (421 KB,1482x902)

Ah, that's a great idea. You definitely have time and the first cour unexpectantly had no major story development.

Also, while watching the stream I was overzealous in taking screenshots in another window so I have 1072 images. After I combine it with next week's I'll upload them all.

File:underwater ray romano.jpg (614.7 KB,2125x1400)

So which one do you guys prefer; this one or the original 2006 version?

File:Utawarerumono.S02E05.False….jpg (234.32 KB,1920x1080)

I only played the VN (and its remaster later on) so I can't say which anime I like more. I'll probably start watching it now and then, but the first one's story is still pretty fresh in my mind.
VN-wise I definitely prefer 2 and 3 over 1, although it did lose its eroge roots. The sex scenes weren't great, but having them there adds a level of atmosphere. Everything else though, from story to gameplay to characters to music to art was a massive leap forward.

is this some ancient /a/ content?

File:0e9c146bf1c0cf19b2551e56b7….jpg (281.58 KB,768x768)

Yes, it is an intentional misspelling of the title since it's hard to pronounce it for Americans because of their "arawrawraw" R's.

See also: Arcueid Brunestud >>> Atari Dumbledore/Arcade Bumstead.

My only wonder is now that the SoL is out of the way, how much time do they have left to dedicate to the serious stuff?

File:Utawarerumono.S02E07.False….jpg (322.72 KB,1920x1080)

The third VN is quite a bit longer than the second one. VNDB puts Uta 2 at 37 hours and Uta 3 at 56 hours.
Mm, seems a lot shorter than I remember. I definitely spent a lot of time doing optional missions, I guess, but both of the games seem longer than that to me. I guess Easy difficulty would let you mow through stuff without thinking?

Anyway, the SoL focus is pretty much gone for the most part and the "conclusion" of S2 which we'll watch this Friday is a big cliffhanger. It was something mentioned to me years ago and I delayed reading the second VN because of it, and I'm definitely glad I did.
Anyone thinking "Man, I wish I watched this 7 years ago": I wouldn't be so sure about that.
Then again, Japanese endings are "supposed" to leave you unsatisfied and upset, aren't they?

File:1.mp4 (13.89 MB,1280x720)

The original plan was to have this special air in the stream, but there's some story stuff buried in it that would be too much of a spoiler, so I've trimmed those pieces out. There's some stuff related to Part 3 so I wouldn't be able to upload this unedited until December.
I don't want to learn how to combine videos, so I just split it into 5 videos.

It's a flashback into a very kissu relevant part of Kuon's childhood.

File:2.mp4 (14.11 MB,1280x720)

[Someone tries to comfort Kuon and something happens, but I have to skip it]
And then this...

File:3.mp4 (6.08 MB,1280x720)

[Something happens again with someone]
Fast forward to night...

File:4.mp4 (3.01 MB,1280x720)

[Kuon is still upset at Oboro and pulls a prank, but I can't show it]

File:5.mp4 (608.79 KB,1280x720)

[Eruruu enacts punishment]
The next morning...
The End.

Who's the protagonist of Utawararararamono?

File:Utawarerumono.S02E05.False….jpg (231.34 KB,1920x1080)

In the first VN "you" are Hakuowlo and in the second and third one "you" are Haku. Like many adaptations it really doesn't care over into the anime.

File:[anon] Utawarerumono - Tus….jpg (251.95 KB,1920x1080)

The OVA I just watched sure is silly and pointless. Loli Kuon is cute though.

File:Utawarerumono.S02E12.False….jpg (376.21 KB,1920x1080)

WHAT?! There's like 8 of them and I just said that the anime doesn't follow the typical VN narrative protagonist thing.

File:Utawarerumono.S02E09.False….jpg (234.69 KB,1920x1080)

Well, people have different tastes and that's life.
Oh yeah, I uploaded the soundtrack in the filesharing thread

Well... hmmm...
We could always add it to a couple Friday streams maybe. The important thing was to get 2 out before 3 since it's the same cast of characters and it's really one story

I think I set my all time binge watching record with the first season, I watched 22 episodes that day.

File:[Anime Time] Utawarerumono….jpg (198.11 KB,1920x1080)

What is this Barbie doll shit though? There aren't even nipples in the BD. This is supposed to be an eroge!

File:[Wizard] Utawarerumono [fa….jpg (268.85 KB,1920x1080)

Meanwhile in the 2006 version... Yeah, this is simply inferior to the original, sorry.

anime then anime now...

Correction: this is from the 2009 OVA that I didn't watch yet, but I'm pretty sure there are some nipples in the 2006 version too if I remember it correctly.

File:[Drag] Utawarerumono OVA -….jpg (Spoiler Image,158.39 KB,1920x1080)

Meh. I think there's still plenty of fan service, just no nipples. They spent so much time in the baths...
And of course specials are going to be more risque.
But yeah, it's not an eroge any more.

File:03 - Violet And Amber.mkv_….jpg (202.07 KB,1280x720)

Anyway, I've started watching the first one on second monitor and I'm checking for any relevant plot points I may have missed describing upthread. I think I got most of it, though, but we'll see.

File:10 - The Mercenary.mkv_sna….jpg (243.78 KB,1280x720)

As I finish episode 11 Uta 1's story is still what I said it was earlier. I don't think I've missed describing anything up there starting at >>91693

Karalau's sword is cool. It's not very relevant, but the "this is a hunk of metal and not a sword" Guts thing is always appreciated.

I think I kinda agree with this sentiment. While 1 is still pretty great, 2 feels like a sort of maturing of the team as storywriters and you can really tell they've learned.

File:087_Mitsumi_Misato_Art_Wor….jpg (4.15 MB,4878x6960)

Yeah, it was something like 15 years, too. It's pretty amazing that so many of the people are the same. Sadly, much of their stuff never makes it over here and I'm never going to learn Japanese.
Well, not that I'm interested in how they're milking Utawarerumono with gacha or board games, really.
Dungeon Travelers 2-2, though... Yeah, not having that really hurts and it's a vita game so the window shut a long time ago.

File:Utawarerumono.S02E13.False….jpg (252.04 KB,1920x1080)

It was really not any easier to get through that even knowing what happens.
Well, I guess that's it for the streams.
I'm not sure what to do with the thread, I guess I'll just talk about how much I love Utawarerumono until I get bored of it.

I'll dump some art that's spoilery for False Mask, but not the coming season.

well not that spoilery on some of these, but eh...

I feel bad for Kuon ;_;
But on the whole this definitely felt like a part 1 to a larger story, definitely good to not wait too long between the two.

this scene destroyed me

But this one (on top) was worse even though it was barely a scene at all, but an image.

Yeah, it's pretty much starting now. Most of the characters are introduced and you know a decent amount about the world and et cetera. The dynamic introduced right at the end is going to... well... tons of emotional strain and suffering ahead.

>But this one (on top) was worse
And yes it was there in the anime, but similarly to the VN it was barely there. Most of it comes from the image itself.
It's her father Oboro comforting her.
It's one of the most beautiful scenes to me. There will be more scenes of intense emotion in the Mask of Truth, so be ready for it...

silly subber

Wait I changed my mind. Do NOT watch the season 3 preview video.
Man, they're way too eager to spoiler things.

I mean 'spoil'.
I understand that they need to show SOMETHING, but geez...

To talk about this image here again >>92325
It features in a brief epilogue, but I think the anime is pacing it differently. Possibly. I'm confused, because there was a clear glimpse of it there int he last episode.
If it's not in episode 1 of season 3 then it won't happen at all, so if it doesn't happen I'll try to find a VN longplay clip of it because it's such a strong, beautiful scene of Kuon's feelings.

I found it. I think it's best to watch this ASAP if you've finished the second season of the anime which we just did in the stream. Chronologically this was supposed to happen after the scenes at the end of the anime.
We saw a glimpse of Kuon's immense power in the anime, briefly. In this scene she goes on a rampage when ambushed and then this plays...
Feel your heart torn from your chest and hear Kuon's soul cry out. I do not know why they did not include this in the anime, but it's the only thing that sticks out to me as missing.

I can watch it 20 times and still cry ;_;

I finished watching the entirety of "season 1" and yeah, I didn't miss anything that's relevant.
I'll point out that there's something in Oboro's words in the Epilogue I posted above that you may have easily missed. I won't say anything more than that, though.

So I recently read "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream", and I have to wonder if there was any influence from that book in here. At least when it comes to AM's final punishment it reminded me of how Iceman turned all the remaining humans into undying eternally suffering slimes.

Where is Tuskur in Japan?

oh, this map is pretty interesting

Yappari, they were actual steppe nomads, the strongest kind of nomad.

File:25 - Traces Of An Ancient ….jpg (Spoiler Image,104.04 KB,1280x720)

Possibly. Faustian bargain is a term I used earlier in the thread inside the big spoiler posts because it's not a new thing.
Anyway, someone asked about Mutsumi and I'm reminded that the anime didn't give her the time that the VN did.
In the VN while Iceman/Haku is in the lab and being experimented there is an incorporeal presence that seems to communicate with him. He didn't know what it was, but it was curious and immature like a child. You never actually "see" it. It grew jealous of the attention Mikoto was getting and demanded a name. Eventually it saw Iceman as a father figure, which actually made more sense because she was created from his extracted human/god DNA in some experiment.

I think everything else was there in the anime.

AM was about humans flying too close to the sun. Uta about sentient beings never learning from their mistakes. Those maybe the punishment was the same, the origins of the idea could have been from somewhere else
