We're in the home stretch of catching up on shows with sequels coming out in the Summer season!
Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen's first 13 episodes will be streamed this Friday, and the final 12 episodes + Bonus will be next Friday, both at my usual streaming time of 6PM EST/11PM UTC!
For those who may be new to this, kissu has an anonymous-supporting fork of cytube and the channel we're using for this is:
https://theatre.kissu.moe/kiss/yukkuri Utawarerumono is a trilogy close to my heart, so much so that I can type it by memory!
Grand story, amazing characters, beautiful art, atmospheric music (RIP Mameda ;_;) and the gameplay in 2 and 3 are actually pretty great if you ask me. I'm going into the anime adaptation blind, however, but if it's half as good as the VN then you're in for a treat.
This is technically season 2, but it's not too strongly related to season 1 which had released a decade earlier. The VNs also share a similar gap in release dates. I'll see if I can find a relevant summary somewhere, though, if people are going in blind.
I will warn you ahead of time if you're someone that avoids conflict in media then this isn't for you. It's a world at war and it also has some really sad moments in it that aren't directly related to war. But, there is also lots of slice of life moments and positive emotions of comradely and romance in it.

It's really fun, though, I really like how the units differentiate from each other. Not very difficult in the story (especially with the Rewind button), but the optional stuff can be.

Okay, so to summarize the original Utawarerumono...
BIG SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST UTAWARERUMONO!!!
BIG SPOILER THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING
It's a sort of hybrid world of Feudal Japan and medieval Europe and other parts of Asia. The people have cute animal ears and tails.
The protagonist, Hakuowlo wakes up in a village with a mask he can't remove and he has amnesia and everyone notices that he has no animal parts. Through a series of events leads his village and then country to war against others. He learns over the course of the story that he's actually supremely important. He was a scientist in an advanced, futuristic civilization and merged with a dark god after stumbling upon his burial area. Said god gives Faustian bargains to people and the scientist made a wish to stay alive or something. He had some mental break about not wanting to do it, splitting into two separate beings. The original game is an eroge and he had sex with EVERYONE, which is actually important to remember.
No.91698
Eru (top) and Aru (bottom)
At some point, the scientist guy (Hakuowlo/God Fusion) was frozen. Maybe the merge took a long time or something?
Anyway, a new group of scientists dug him up. He was called the Iceman since he was found frozen underground or in a cave somewhere. The scientists were searching for a way to strengthen humanity and were partaking in many cruel experiments. Humans were too weak to live on the surface. One scientist helped Iceman escape along with some other animal people, including one he fell in love with named Mikoto that looks a little bit like Eru. The circular hair ornament in Eru's hair is a keepsake, but it's in actuality a key to that laboratory.
FULL SUFFERING AHEAD
After enough time passed for Hawowlo and Mikoto to have a child... they are captured by the scientists. They... *sigh*
Mikoto and child are dissected 'Made in Abyss' style because she was an animal ears person that successfully reproduced (with Hakuowlo).
After learning this, Hakuwlo/God becomes enraged and awakens to his god powers which he had previously "forgotten"? He grants mankind's wish for strength by giving them bodies that won't die, but they become mindless red blobs of slime. Human Hakuowlo has an inner monologue for someone to stop him. <-- remember this part
Anyway...
Chronologically, right before the beginning of the game before Hakuowlo wakes up with amnesia it's revealed that Hakuowlo revived Aru from death, but the cost was that Eru became his, body and soul.
Eru and Hakuowlo essentially become a couple by the end of the game. Is it real love or mind slavery? Eru thinks it's real love, but it's up to interpretation. Maybe the God's curse on her was broken at some point?
Aru started to see Hakuwlo as a father figure very early on.
Hawkowlo the merged but benevolent God at the end of the game promises Eru and Aru that they'll meet again someday.
Man, that took a while to write. I kept remembering new stuff and I even opened up some episodes to confirm some things.
No.91699
>>91698Well, this one won't be long since I don't remember much.
Yuzuha and Oboro.
Oboro is very protective of his deathly ill sister, whom Hakuowlo regularly visits throughout the story. Finally, he pleads for him to grant her wish. Her wish is to have a child that can explore the world. This isn't a dark god wish, just a human to human plea. As mentioned it was an eroge so he certainly tries. Also Oboro has two apprentice boy ninjas that follow him around that really, really want to do gay stuff with him. I don't remember if it's confirmed if they do or not. This isn't important to the story, but it's good to know.

former slave that likes to get drunk.
No.91703
>>91701Oh yeah that woman's name is Karulau.
This woman is Touka. She's, uhh... hmm.. I remember her being really awkward, but not very story significant in the grand scheme of things.

>>91703Benawi and Kurou. Benawi is an expert tactician and
former general of an enemy faction before joining Hakuowlo and Kurou is just his really strong second in command

Uhh...
They're both part of a neutral country that oversees the other countries and gives advice as divine mediators of the (unknown to them as evil) god.I think this is about sums up the characters with any sort of relevance to what we're going to watch. Other stuff happens, but apart from passing references I can't remember it mattering to 2 and 3's storyline.
Hmm...
No.91745
Why are we streaming Itsuwari no Kamen? Did we already stream the other one? I thought the new season was going to be a continuation (?) of that one...
No.91750
>>91745>Did we already stream the other one? We're catching up on shows that have sequels in Summer. Unfortunately, due to time constraints there wasn't any room for Utawarerumono's first season. The stories aren't heavily connected and I did my best to give a summary of the stuff that MIGHT be relevant (keeping it vague) in the thread.
>I thought the new season was going to be a continuation (?) of that one...It's a continuation of the one being streamed right now, yeah. This one ends on a huge cliffhanger and it will lead directly into the new season.
No.91751
>>91750Also, I'm surprised at the pacing so far. It's keeping the general pace of a LOT of slice of life stuff early on, so while they could have compressed it more heavily they chose not to. Each episode is generally introducing one to two characters.
Very interesting.
No.91752
So much slice of life to build character relations when the world is more interesting than romances, sigh...

>>91757Dedicating probably as much time as the games do to SoL sure is something neat. I would've thought that like most VN adaptations it dives straight into the main story, but guess that was wrong.
No.91760
I just can't be bothered with the sol. I always ctrl past those sections in VNs. Interpersonal relationships are so dull compared to the personal growth of characters and the larger scheme of how society and nature create the world
No.91781
>>91760Hmm, well it's pretty inseparable from Utawarerumono and a big part of its charm, similar to Higurashi or really anything else that wants you to empathize with the characters. I think anyone that watched tonight's stream should have a strong liking to the characters by now, they're very lovable and the scenes were great.
It was definitely a complaint I've heard about the VNs, though, and probably not something people expected in a VN attached to a tactical game.

Shinseki Yori did it nice by giving me a constant feeling of doom and that something is wrong with their way of life, but I started tuning out of it when they were doing cute things and then the slave girls showed up to rub his crotch and I just didn't really care anymore until episode 13 showed up

Also, while watching the stream I was overzealous in taking screenshots in another window so I have 1072 images. After I combine it with next week's I'll upload them all.
No.91842
>>91841I only played the VN (and its remaster later on) so I can't say which anime I like more. I'll probably start watching it now and then, but the first one's story is still pretty fresh in my mind.
VN-wise I definitely prefer 2 and 3 over 1, although it did lose its eroge roots. The sex scenes weren't great, but having them there adds a level of atmosphere. Everything else though, from story to gameplay to characters to music to art was a massive leap forward.

No.92143
>>92136The third VN is quite a bit longer than the second one. VNDB puts Uta 2 at 37 hours and Uta 3 at 56 hours.
Mm, seems a lot shorter than I remember. I definitely spent a lot of time doing optional missions, I guess, but both of the games seem longer than that to me. I guess Easy difficulty would let you mow through stuff without thinking?
Anyway, the SoL focus is pretty much gone for the most part and the "conclusion" of S2 which we'll watch this Friday is a big cliffhanger. It was something mentioned to me years ago and I delayed reading the second VN because of it, and I'm definitely glad I did.
Anyone thinking "Man, I wish I watched this 7 years ago": I wouldn't be so sure about that.
Then again, Japanese endings are "supposed" to leave you unsatisfied and upset, aren't they?

The original plan was to have this special air in the stream, but there's some story stuff buried in it that would be too much of a spoiler, so I've trimmed those pieces out. There's some stuff related to Part 3 so I wouldn't be able to upload this unedited until December.
I don't want to learn how to combine videos, so I just split it into 5 videos.
