What's the deal with the 360/PS3/Wii generation taking so long to emulate? Compared to the time it took for the first (somewhat) working emulator for the ps2 to come out, it's been 4x as long and we barely have anything for the 360 and ps3. Also, why is it that emulators are so demanding for such out of date hardware? Surely, there must be a way for these games to be emulated such that it doesn't take hardware 1000x as powerful than what was available at the time to run.

am i missing something? I thought that generation of consoles is well emulated

From what I know it's still in a fairly barebones state. Some things work and other games are still fairly broken and maybe even unplayable. Also stuff like Demon's Souls emulated on PC which was a pretty big goal for these emulators, still has some performance problems at times.

It's all comes down to the poor documentation of the original hardware. You can't make a good emulator, if you don't know how the system works.

The only one listed there that's currently well emulated is the Wii with Dolphin. The 360 and PS3 have emulators in the works, but that are basically still very experimental and not usable for the overwhelming majority of games. I think you're thinking of the generation before that; the gamecube, and PS2 are both have stable emulators. The original Xbox emulator still is pretty experimental too, however.

RPCS3 has been decent enough to play many games for years now.

Nier, Drakengard 3, Demon's Souls, all can be played perfectly and better than the original PS3.

Maybe people aren't throwing enough money at the coders. I still can't believe that switch one (cemu?) is getting thousands of dollars a month. I mean, yeah they deserve donations but it's crazy that it's something they can rely on as a job.
I forgot that I have Dragon's Crown to play on emulator (PS3) soon. bleh, backlog is getting longer and longer.

I guess it must be because people want modded smash so badly that they pay these developers to make their switch emulator.

On the topic of PS3 emulators, anyone know if Drakengrard 3 is playable on them?

Why emulate when you can get a console for cheap online and jail break it? Much better compatibility, less wasted space on your PCs storage and authentic lag! (Lag being for the PS3 when it tries to run any game that uses the bloated mess that is the Unreal Engine)

Because emulating is free?

Nope it isn't because you got to factor in any new computer parts to even be able to run the emulator and as stated above storage because those sites hosting those bins and ISOs won't stay up forever.
Better to spend money in the sort term to save money in the long term.

According to this list https://rpcs3.net/compatibility, yes it's playable

But it's not saving money in the long term if you're interested in current games, since you'd be upgrading anyways.
