How do you find new music/bands that you like?

I ask because, for the longest time, I tried doing it by genre. If I liked a band, I would look up what genre they were in, and then in turn try looking up other bands that were in the same genre. But it rarely worked, and it's because I've found that my tastes don't align cleanly to genre bounds. I like a bunch of different artists, but only about three or four per-genre.

I don't really go searching for music any more. I just listen to video game soundtracks after I play them and I guess some anime OP/EDs. I used to use Pandora something like 15 years ago, but maybe the youtube algorithm does something similar these days?
Maybe you could listen to some online radio stations, like the ones some imageboards host? That's probably just Japanese music related to anime and stuff, though.

youtube playlists. Albeit nowadays it just recycles the same things I've watched before...

Discogs and the YouTube algorithm mostly. Discogs especially is great because you can look up a particular artist and see what songs they have to their name or you can look up what label(s) they released their music under to then find more similar artists and songs

I've just been listening to dungeon synth lately through playlists and following their communities, just easy backround noise for studying and drawing

oh, and Discogs sometimes has entries for that aren't even on YouTube, other streaming sites or even pirate sites. i've bought some physical releases from there because of that

Random links sent by Anonymous (and the recommendations in those links) is how I've discovered the songs/artists I listen to right now.

I usually go through my own playlists on YT once a day to relax and listen to random entries that happen to speak to me that day, then eventually drift off into the Recommendeds and go on an adventure until I get bored.

If you like 70s to 80s Disco, Hi-NRG and all that fun stuff, one life hack is to search the songs you like along with "Vinyl" or "Inch", which will often provide you with authentic remixes (7 inch or 12 inch) from the same era. This is helpful because remixes from that era actually are remixes in the truest sense of the word, meaning the instrumentals will largely be the exact same, just with some rhythmic changes or added layers, so you are more or less guaranteed to enjoy what you find. From there you can check out other releases from the same remixer, Phil Harding for example, to find similar artists and look into their discography if you like what you hear.

Think of deranged genre combos that would actually sound good and surf the net to search up if anything is described in this genre combo, or if some artist or genre is similar to what you're thinking of.

Another approach is to search "bands/tracks/albums like *my favourite* or what's the actual subgenre for it" or start a discussion like that somewhere you'll get an answer.

Oh also surfing through Touhou remixes for any genres I haven't seen before really broadened my music taste senses, awareness, and knowledge.

genres are just labels, they don't mean anything and really good musicians are inspired beyond limited categories so no surprise you didn't find what you were looking for, anyway this is what you do:
-recommendations from friends
-looking through interviews of artists I like and seeing who they endorse and list as inspos.

using an algorithm is the worst way to discover music btw, never use spotify, last.fm, rym, etc. All shit.

convenient, dude
even deleuze wouldn't refute this

 No.163368

That's true. But the youtube algorithm sometimes is helpful. Also, for spotify I discovered a lot of songs just by searching other people playlists, and the algorithm that appears when you leave a song on is okish.

anyway genre labels were useful in how I used them.
typical "ehh this rock track (which is actually math rock djent but I wouldn't know this because it's not labeled in detail) is of genre - rock? guess I'll check most recommended rock tracks (which is typically some prog rock or pop rock or something completely irrelevant)" situations of course will go bad.
